Modular Detector System for Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope

    Get PDF
This paper describes a multiple detector system based on a high-dispersion highly-corrected spectrometer close-coupled to a high-excitation objective lens. The design enables all post-specimen detectors (including the elastic dark-field detector) to be transferred to the post-spectrometer region. This in turn makes possible the simultaneous acquisition of filtered bright-field, elastic dark-field and inelastic images. The associated data acquisition system has provision for up to four simultaneous inputs and is based on a 32-bit microprocessor with 2 Mbytes of memory and 85 Mbytes of local disk storage. Images can be archived locally (cassette tape) or transferred via Ethernet to the laboratory central computer facility for off-line processing

Composite vertices that lead to soft form factors

The momentum-space cut-off parameter Λ\Lambda of hadronic vertex functions is studied in this paper. We use a composite model where we can measure the contributions of intermediate particle propagations to Λ\Lambda. We show that in many cases a composite vertex function has a much smaller cut-off than its constituent vertices, particularly when light constituents such as pions are present in the intermediate state. This suggests that composite meson-baryon-baryon vertex functions are rather soft, i.e., they have \Lambda considerably less than 1 GeV. We discuss the origin of this softening of form factors as well as the implications of our findings on the modeling of nuclear reactions.Comment: REVTex, 19 pages, 5 figs(to be provided on request

OBJECTIVE: To systematically identify mental health research and researchers in Pakistan. Subsidiary objectives were to identify methodologies of studies published in the indexed journals along with their country wide mean impact factor. METHODS: A systematic search strategy using key words related to neuropsychiatry was carried out to identify various studies published in Indexed and Non-indexed databases. RESULTS: We identified 108 studies from Indexed data bases (77.8% Medline; 22.2% PsychInfo). Beside these, 51 studies were also identified from non-indexed databases. Among the indexed articles, 97 (89.8%) were Journal articles while 10 were other type of documents--there were 3 clinical trials of which only one was a randomized controlled trial. The mean Impact Factor (IF) of these studies was 2.75 (Range; 2.21-3.29). The median IF was 2.90. The most preferred journal for publication was the Journal of Pakistan Medical Association (JPMA; N = 33) followed by British Journal of Psychiatry (B J Psych; N = 11) and Journal of College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan (JCPSP; N = 9). From the indexed and non-indexed publications we identified 43 researchers. Among these 34 (80%) were psychiatrists. CONCLUSION: The key finding of this mental health research mapping exercise is that mental health research output from Pakistan is low both in numbers and quality, with very few studies making it to high impact international journals. There is an urgent need to strengthen research capacity in areas of mental health at individual, organizational and macro-system levels

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of feeding Awassi lambs different ratios of concentrate: wheat straw (C: R) on blood parameters. Five pellets of total mixed rations (TMR) containing 30:70, 40:60, 50:50, 60:40 and 70:30 of C: R ratios were prepared and offered to lambs ad libitum. The results showed that increasing the C: R ratio significantly (P<0.01) increased the blood glucose. Higher concentration, 75.38 and 75.59 mg/100 ml were recorded in blood samples withdrawn from lambs fed on pellets containing 60:40 and 70:30 of C: R ratios respectively. similarly, those blood samples were characterized with higher (P<0.01) concentrations of total protein and triglycerides. With regard to urea nitrogen, higher (P<0.01) concentration, 44.15, 42.68 and 44.98 mg/100 ml were detected in blood samples withdrawn from lambs fed pellets containing 50:50, 60:40 and 70:30, respectively

Parameter Inference in the Pulmonary Circulation of Mice

    Get PDF
This study focuses on parameter inference in a pulmonary blood cir- culation model for mice. It utilises a fluid dynamics network model that takes selected parameter values and aims to mimic features of the pulmonary haemody- namics under normal physiological and pathological conditions. This is of medical relevance as it allows monitoring of the progression of pulmonary hypertension. Constraint nonlinear optimization is successfully used to learn the parameter values

Foliage applied zinc ensures better growth, yield and grain biofortification of mungbean

This study was carried out to optimize the zinc (Zn) foliar application for improving mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) grain yield and its biofortification. The plants were either sprayed with distilled water, or with Zn solution (0.50, 1.0 and 1.5%) using ZnSO 4 .7H 2 O as source while no spray was also taken as control. Zn foliar application improved the seedling growth, morphological and yield parameters, grain yield and grain Zn concentration in mungbean. Among the various foliar treatments, Zn foliar application at 0.5% was the most effective in improving the root system (longer roots with more roots proliferation), seedling growth, chlorophyll contents, yield related paramet ers, and grain yield; while for grain Zn concentration foliar applied Zn at 1% was effective. Zn application at 0.5 and 1% increased the grain yield and grain Zn concentration by 86 – 38% and 78 – 156%, respectively than no application. Thus, Zn may be foliar applied at 0.5 – 1% for harvesting good grain yield and Zn - enriched grains of mungbean
