The Transition to College Process in PR-CETP Scholars
This article describes a study about the experiences of a group of students during the transition from high school to college. The students are future teachers who evidenced a high level of academic achievement in high school and received merit scholarships from the Puerto Rico Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation (PR-CETP). Two groups of students were compared: those who sustained a high GPA during their freshman year, and those who did not and, therefore, no longer qualified for the scholarship. The study was carried out through focused interviews with eight students, from three universities, four of whom maintained the scholarship and four who did not. Findings indicate that the main problems encountered were academic and social, and that the students received support from their families during the entire process. Regarding formal support, they pointed out that they felt highly satisfied with the services provided by PR-CETP and the universities, but they also pointed out (particularly those who lost the scholarship) that they needed additional services from the universities. They suggested, for example, better tutoring, and social activities among the scholars. The interviewed students, in general, consider that they faced the transition successfully since most of them described their academic, emotional, and social status as satisfactory at the time of the interviews
The Persistence of Memory, or How the X-Ray Spectrum of SNR 0509-67.5 Reveals the Brightness of its Parent Type Ia Supernova
We examine the dynamics and X-ray spectrum of the young Type Ia supernova
remnant 0509-67.5 in the context of the recent results obtained from the
optical spectroscopy of its light echo. Our goal is to estimate the kinetic
energy of the supernova explosion using Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of
the supernova remnant, thus placing the birth event of 0509-67.5 in the
sequence of dim to bright Type Ia supernovae. We base our analysis on a
standard grid of one-dimensional delayed detonation explosion models, together
with hydrodynamic and X-ray spectral calculations of the supernova remnant
evolution. From the remnant dynamics and the properties of the O, Si, S, and Fe
emission in its X-ray spectrum we conclude that 0509-67.5 was originated ~400
years ago by a bright, highly energetic Type Ia explosion similar to SN 1991T.
Our best model has a kinetic energy of 1.4x10E51 erg and synthesizes 0.97 Msun
of 56Ni. These results are in excellent agreement with the age estimate and
spectroscopy from the light echo. We have thus established the first connection
between a Type Ia supernova and its supernova remnant based on a detailed

Modal verbs in L’Étranger and its Romance translations: Old problems and new perspectives
In this paper we compare L’Étranger to two Spanish translations in order to shed light on two theoretical issues. Firstly, the externalization problem (Laca, 2018): where do temporal and aspectual auxiliaries realize preferably in Sp. vs. Fr.? Are high perfects related to low perfects? Secondly, perfect tenses raise a problem when it comes to translate epistemic modal sentences from Fr. into Sp. In a configuration with a low perfect the modal may accept both the imparfait and the simple past. Each of the solutions has a particular contribution on discourse. Epistemic modals will also prove to serve both as a means to indirectly order the situations described in the foreground and to achieve the characteristic impression of vividness of L’Étranger due to their particular semantics
Bolometric light curves of supernovae and post-explosion magnetic fields
The various effects leading to diversity in the bolometric light curves of
supernovae are examined: nucleosynthesis, kinematic differences, ejected mass,
degree of mixing, and configuration and intensity of the magnetic field are
discussed. In Type Ia supernovae, a departure in the bolometric light curve
from the full-trapping decline of Co can occur within the two and a half
years after the explosion, depending on the evolutionary path followed by the
WD during the accretion phase. If convection has developed in the WD core
during the presupernova evolution, starting several thousand years before the
explosion, a tangled magnetic field close to the equipartition value should
have grown in the WD. Such an intense magnetic field would confine positrons
where they originate from the Co decays, and preclude a strong departure
from the full-trapping decline, as the supernova expands. This situation is
expected to occur in C+O Chandrasekhar WDs as opposed to edge-lit detonated
sub-Chandrasekhar WDs. If the pre-explosion magnetic field of the WD is less
intense than 10G, a lack of confinement of the positrons emitted in the
Co decay and a departure from full-trapping decline would occur. The
time at which it takes place can provide estimates of the original magnetic
field of the WD, its configuration, and also of the mass of the supernova
ejecta. In SN 1991bg, the bolometric light curve suggests absence of a
significant tangled magnetic field (intensity lower than G).
Chandrasekhar-mass models do not reproduce the bolometric light curve of this
supernova. For SN 1972E, on the contrary, there is evidence for a tangled
configuration of the magnetic field and its light curve is well reproduced by a

Influence of earthquake duration on the response of steel moment frames
The influence of ground motion duration on the seismic response of steel moment frames is examined is this paper, with due consideration for cyclic degradation effects. A set of 77 spectrally equivalent pairs of short and long records is utilised in detailed nonlinear dynamic assessments in order to isolate the effects of ground motion duration. The influence of duration is firstly evaluated considering degrading and non-degrading idealised bilinear SDOF systems, for various levels of lateral strength representing practical ranges encountered in design. Subsequently, a sensitivity assessment focusing on the main parameters affecting the response of hysteretic degrading models is carried out through comparative incremental dynamic analysis. Whilst the effect of duration becomes more pronounced with the increase in lateral strength demands, particularly when approaching collapse, the cyclic degradation rate is shown to play a significant role even at lower levels typically associated with design. The performance of EC8-compliant frames indicates a higher probability of collapse when long-duration ground motion records are used, with a typical reduction of about 20% in the collapse capacity, in comparison with short-duration cases. The influence of duration is also examined through collapse capacity spectra, based on the seismic performance of 50 steel moment frames, which show that considerable reduction in the structural collapse capacity of structural systems occurs when relatively long duration records are adopted, for a wide range of dynamic characteristics. This becomes particularly evident in the case of buildings with relatively significant cyclic deterioration rates, where collapse capacity reductions up to 40% due to the influence of earthquake duration are obtained
Type Ia Supernova Scenarios and the Hubble Sequence
The dependence of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) rate on galaxy type is
examined for three currently proposed scenarios: merging of a
Chandrasekhar--mass CO white dwarf (WD) with a CO WD companion, explosion of a
sub--Chandrasekhar mass CO WD induced by accretion of material from a He star
companion, and explosion of a sub--Chandrasekhar CO WD in a symbiotic system.
The variation of the SNe Ia rate and explosion characteristics with time is
derived, and its correlation with parent population age and galaxy redshift is
discussed. Among current scenarios, CO + He star systems should be absent from
E galaxies. Explosion of CO WDs in symbiotic systems could account for the SNe
Ia rate in these galaxies. The same might be true for the CO + CO WD scenario,
depending on the value of the common envelope parameter. A testable prediction
of the sub--Chandrasekhar WD model is that the average brightness and kinetic
energy of the SN Ia events should increase with redshift for a given Hubble
type. Also for this scenario, going along the Hubble sequence from E to Sc
galaxies SNe Ia events should be brighter on average and should show larger
mean velocities of the ejecta. The observational correlations strongly suggest
that the characteristics of the SNe Ia explosion are linked to parent
population age. The scenario in which WDs with masses below the Chandrasekhar
mass explode appears the most promising one to explain the observed variation
of the SN Ia rate with galaxy type together with the luminosity--expansion

Previous literature has focused on the impact of job loss on working careers with little attention to its impact on pension wealth, particularly the extent to which longevity heterogeneity amplifies unemployment scars. This paper investigates the effect of single and multiple unemployment spells on the lifetime pension entitlements of earnings-related contributory pension schemes, considering the timing and duration of breaks, alternative lifecycle labour earnings profiles, scarring and restoration effects on labour market re-entry, the existence of pension credits and pension accruals for periods spent outside the labour market, longevity heterogeneity, and the accumulation and decumulation redistributive features of the pension scheme. Pension entitlements are estimated using a backward-looking simulation approach based on the actual Portuguese public pension system rules and stylized labour market profiles identified in the SHARE Job Episodes Panel data using a sequence analysis. Longevity heterogeneity is modelled using a stochastic mortality model with a frailty model. Our results show that the timing and duration of unemployment periods is critical, that scarring effects amplify pension wealth losses, that minimum pension provisions, pension credits and pension scheme redistributive features can partially mitigate the impact of unemployment periods on future entitlements, and that the presence of positive correlation between lifetime income and longevity career breaks can amplify the asymmetry in the distribution of pension entitlements across income groups.authorsversionpublishe
