Photoproduction off the nucleon revisited: Evidence for a narrow N(1688) resonance?

Revised analysis of Σ\Sigma beam asymmetry for the η\eta photoproduction on the free proton reveals a structure at W1.69W\sim 1.69 GeV. Fit of the experimental data based on the E429 solution of the SAID partial wave analysis suggests a narrow (Γ25\Gamma \leq 25 MeV) resonance. Possible candidates are P11,P13P_{11}, P_{13}, or D13D_{13} resonances. The result is considered in conjunction with the recent evidence for a bump-like structure at W1.671.68W\sim 1.67 - 1.68 GeV in the quasi-free η\eta photoproduction on the neutron.Comment: Contribution to the Workshop on the Physics of the Excited Nucleons NSTAR2007, Bonn, Germany, Sept. 5 - 8 2007. Photogrammetry and ballistic analysis of a high-flying projectile in the STS-124 space shuttle launch

A method combining photogrammetry with ballistic analysis is demonstrated to identify flying debris in a rocket launch environment. Debris traveling near the STS-124 Space Shuttle was captured on cameras viewing the launch pad within the first few seconds after launch. One particular piece of debris caught the attention of investigators studying the release of flame trench fire bricks because its high trajectory could indicate a flight risk to the Space Shuttle. Digitized images from two pad perimeter high-speed 16-mm film cameras were processed using photogrammetry software based on a multi-parameter optimization technique. Reference points in the image were found from 3D CAD models of the launch pad and from surveyed points on the pad. The three-dimensional reference points were matched to the equivalent two-dimensional camera projections by optimizing the camera model parameters using a gradient search optimization technique. Using this method of solving the triangulation problem, the xyz position of the object's path relative to the reference point coordinate system was found for every set of synchronized images. This trajectory was then compared to a predicted trajectory while performing regression analysis on the ballistic coefficient and other parameters. This identified, with a high degree of confidence, the object's material density and thus its probable origin within the launch pad environment. Future extensions of this methodology may make it possible to diagnose the underlying causes of debris-releasing events in near-real time, thus improving flight safety.Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, 3 table

Spin susceptibility in superconductors without inversion symmetry

In materials without spatial inversion symmetry the spin degeneracy of the conduction electrons can be lifted by an antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling. We discuss the influence of this spin-orbit coupling on the spin susceptibility of such superconductors, with a particular emphasis on the recently discovered heavy Fermion superconductor CePt3Si. We find that, for this compound (with tetragonal crystal symmetry,) irrespective of the pairing symmetry, the stable superconducting phases would give a very weak change of the spin susceptibility for fields along the c-axis and an intermediate reduction for fields in the basal plane. We also comment on the consequences for the paramagnetic limiting in this material.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

Theory, Politics... and History? Early post-war Soviet Control Engineering

    Get PDF
A fascinating feature of post-war control engineering in the former Soviet Union was the rôle played by the study of the history of the discipline. Even before and during World War II some Soviet control scientists were actively researching the history of their subject; while after the war, historical studies played an important part both in technical developments and in legitimating a native Russian tradition. Two of the most important figures in this historical activity were A. A. Andronov and I. N. Voznesenskii, whose contributions are briefly considered

    Transitions/relaxations in polyester adhesive/PET system

    Get PDF
The correlations between the transitions and the dielectric relaxation processes of the oriented poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) pre-impregnated of the polyester thermoplastic adhesive have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic dielectric spectroscopy (DDS). The thermoplastic polyester adhesive and the oriented PET films have been studied as reference samples. This study evidences that the adhesive chain segments is responsible for the physical structure evolution in the PET-oriented film. The transitions and dielectric relaxation modes’ evolutions in the glass transition region appear characteristic of the interphase between adhesive and PET film, which is discussed in terms of molecular mobility. The storage at room temperature of the adhesive tape involves the heterogeneity of the physical structure, characterized by glass transition dissociation. Thus, the correlation between the transitions and the dielectric relaxation processes evidences a segregation of the amorphous phases. Therefore, the physical structure and the properties of the material have been linked to the chemical characteristics

New limits on 2ε2\varepsilon, εβ+\varepsilon\beta^+ and 2β+2\beta^+ decay of 136^{136}Ce and 138^{138}Ce with deeply purified cerium sample

A search for double electron capture (2ε2\varepsilon), electron capture with positron emission (εβ+\varepsilon\beta^+), and double positron emission 2β+2\beta^+) in 136^{136}Ce and 138^{138}Ce was realized with a 465 cm3^3 ultra-low background HP Ge γ\gamma spectrometer over 2299 h at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. A 627 g sample of cerium oxide deeply purified by liquid-liquid extraction method was used as a source of γ\gamma quanta expected in double β\beta decay of the cerium isotopes. New improved half-life limits were set on different modes and channels of double β\beta decay of 136^{136}Ce and 138^{138}Ce at the level of T1/2>10171018T_{1/2}>10^{17}-10^{18} yr.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, 2 table
