Clock and Trigger Synchronization between Several Chassis of Digital Data Acquisition Modules
In applications with segmented high purity Ge detectors or other detector
arrays with tens or hundreds of channels, where the high development cost and
limited flexibility of application specific integrated circuits outweigh their
benefits of low power and small size, the readout electronics typically consist
of multi-channel data acquisition modules in a common chassis for power, clock
and trigger distribution, and data readout. As arrays become larger and reach
several hundred channels, the readout electronics have to be divided over
several chassis, but still must maintain precise synchronization of clocks and
trigger signals across all channels. This division becomes necessary not only
because of limits given by the instrumentation standards on module size and
chassis slot numbers, but also because data readout times increase when more
modules share the same data bus and because power requirements approach the
limits of readily available power supplies. In this paper, we present a method
for distributing clocks and triggers between 4 PXI chassis containing DGF
Pixie-16 modules with up to 226 acquisition channels per chassis in a data
acquisition system intended to instrument the over 600 channels of the SeGA
detector array at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. Our
solution is designed to achieve synchronous acquisition of detector waveforms
from all channels with a jitter of less then 1 ns, and can be extended to a
larger number of chassis if desired.Comment: CAARI 200
Revealing the last 13,500 years of environmental history from the multiproxy record of a mountain lake (Lago Enol, northern Iberian Peninsula)

The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10933-009-9387-7.We present the Holocene sequence from Lago Enol (43°16′N, 4°59′W, 1,070 m a.s.l.), Cantabrian Mountains, northern Spain. A multiproxy analysis provided comprehensive information about regional humidity and temperature changes. The analysis included sedimentological descriptions, physical properties, organic carbon and carbonate content, mineralogy and geochemical composition together with biological proxies including diatom and ostracod assemblages. A detailed pollen study enabled reconstruction of variations in vegetation cover, which were interpreted in the context of climate changes and human impact. Four distinct stages were recognized for the last 13,500 years: (1) a cold and dry episode that includes the Younger Dryas event (13,500–11,600 cal. year BP); (2) a humid and warmer period characterizing the onset of the Holocene (11,600–8,700 cal. year BP); (3) a tendency toward a drier climate during the middle Holocene (8,700–4,650 cal. year BP); and (4) a return to humid conditions following landscape modification by human activity (pastoral activities, deforestation) in the late Holocene (4,650–2,200 cal. year BP). Superimposed on relatively stable landscape conditions (e.g. maintenance of well established forests), the typical environmental variability of the southern European region is observed at this site.The Spanish Inter-Ministry Commission of Science and

Impact of biological sex, concussion history and sport on baseline neurotracker performance in university varsity athletes
This study aimed to assess the impact of biological sex, concussion history, and type of sport on the baseline Neurotracker performance, a test/train three-dimensional multiple object tracking paradigm used in sport contexts, in university level varsity athletes. A total of 136 university level varsity athletes participating in male ice hockey, male or female soccer, female volleyball, and mixed biological sex cheerleading underwent preseason Neurotracker baseline assessments. Significant differences in Neurotracker performance were observed based on biological sex (p<0.01) and type of sport played (p<0.05). Male athletes and hockey players demonstrated higher Neurotracker performance compared to their counterparts. However, no significant differences were found in Neurotracker performance based on the history of concussion. Thus, factors such as biological sex and type of sport played may influence baseline Neurotracker performance
Lynchet-Type Terraces, Loess, and Agricultural Resilience on Chalk Landscapes in the UK and Belgium
Lynchets, often the defining component of historic agricultural landscapes in northern Europe, are generally associated with soft-limestone geologies and are particularly well developed on loess-mantled landscapes. To understand their formation and chronology, the authors present their geoarchaeological analyses of lynchet soils and loess deposits at Blick Mead and Charlton Forest in southern England, and Sint Martens-Voeren in Belgium. The lynchets date from the late prehistoric to the medieval periods and were constructed by plough action at the English sites, and by both cut-and-fill and ploughing in Belgium. This has resulted in the preservation of highly fertile loessic soils across chalk slopes, lost elsewhere. Although each example is associated with local/regional agricultural histories, the lynchets’ effective soil-retention capacities allowed them to survive as important heritage features with environmental benefits over millennia
Climate-driven regime shifts in the biological communities of arctic lakes
Fifty-five paleolimnological records from lakes in the circumpolar Arctic reveal widespread species changes and ecological reorganizations in algae and invertebrate communities since approximately anno Domini 1850. The remoteness of these sites, coupled with the ecological characteristics of taxa involved, indicate that changes are primarily driven by climate warming through lengthening of the summer growing season and related limnological changes. The widespread distribution and similar character of these changes indicate that the opportunity to study arctic ecosystems unaffected by human influences may have disappeared. © 2005 by The National Academy of Sciences of the USA
