Pattern formation in finite size non-equilibrium systems and models of morphogenesis
Two canonical pattern forming systems, the Rayleigh-Benard convection and the Turing mechanism for biological pattern formation, are compared. The similarity and fundamental differences in the mathematical structure of the two systems are addressed, with special emphasis on how the linear onset of patterns is affected by the finite size and the boundary conditions. Our analysis is facilitated by continuously varying the boundary condition, from one that admits simple algebraic solution of the problem but is unrealistic to another which is physically realizable. Our investigation shows that the size dependence of the convection problem can be considered generic, in the sense that for the majority of boundary conditions the same trend is to be observed, while for the corresponding Turing mechanism one will rely crucially on the assumed boundary conditions to ensure that a particular sequence of patterns be picked up as the system grows in size. This suggests that, although different systems might exhibit similar pattern forming features, it is still possible to distinguish them by characteristics which are specific to the individual models
Vacuum-UV spectroscopy of interstellar ice analogs. II. Absorption cross-sections of nonpolar ice molecules
Dust grains in cold circumstellar regions and dark-cloud interiors at 10-20 K
are covered by ice mantles. A nonthermal desorption mechanism is invoked to
explain the presence of gas-phase molecules in these environments, such as the
photodesorption induced by irradiation of ice due to secondary ultraviolet
photons. To quantify the effects of ice photoprocessing, an estimate of the
photon absorption in ice mantles is required. In a recent work, we reported the
vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) absorption cross sections of nonpolar molecules in the
solid phase. The aim was to estimate the VUV-absorption cross sections of
nonpolar molecular ice components, including CH4, CO2, N2, and O2. The column
densities of the ice samples deposited at 8 K were measured in situ by infrared
spectroscopy in transmittance. VUV spectra of the ice samples were collected in
the 120-160 nm (10.33-7.74 eV) range using a commercial microwave-discharged
hydrogen flow lamp. We found that, as expected, solid N2 has the lowest
VUV-absorption cross section, which about three orders of magnitude lower than
that of other species such as O2, which is also homonuclear. Methane (CH4) ice
presents a high absorption near Ly-alpha (121.6 nm) and does not absorb below
148 nm. Estimating the ice absorption cross sections is essential for models of
ice photoprocessing and allows estimating the ice photodesorption rates as the
number of photodesorbed molecules per absorbed photon in the ice.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 7 table
Clustering Memes in Social Media
The increasing pervasiveness of social media creates new opportunities to
study human social behavior, while challenging our capability to analyze their
massive data streams. One of the emerging tasks is to distinguish between
different kinds of activities, for example engineered misinformation campaigns
versus spontaneous communication. Such detection problems require a formal
definition of meme, or unit of information that can spread from person to
person through the social network. Once a meme is identified, supervised
learning methods can be applied to classify different types of communication.
The appropriate granularity of a meme, however, is hardly captured from
existing entities such as tags and keywords. Here we present a framework for
the novel task of detecting memes by clustering messages from large streams of
social data. We evaluate various similarity measures that leverage content,
metadata, network features, and their combinations. We also explore the idea of
pre-clustering on the basis of existing entities. A systematic evaluation is
carried out using a manually curated dataset as ground truth. Our analysis
shows that pre-clustering and a combination of heterogeneous features yield the
best trade-off between number of clusters and their quality, demonstrating that
a simple combination based on pairwise maximization of similarity is as
effective as a non-trivial optimization of parameters. Our approach is fully
automatic, unsupervised, and scalable for real-time detection of memes in

A modified leapfrog scheme for shallow water equations

Here, we propose using the time-averaged heights in the pressure gradient force in the momentum equations. The stability analysis shows that the new scheme is neutral when Courant number <1. The scheme is 2nd order accurate in both time and space. It does not require iterations and can be easily applied in 2D or 3D wave equations. The numerical simulations for 2-D linearized shallow water equations are consistent with those obtained from a 2-time-step semi-implicit scheme
A study of the relation between inflation and exchange rates in the Fiji Islands: a cointegration and vector error correction approach
The main purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the exchange rates, international prices, and the demand shocks on inflation in Fiji. How the domestic inflation in a pegged exchange rate system is aligned with international price shocks is an important monetarist idea, and this is tested in this study. This study employs annual data from 1975 to 2010. The multivariate cointegration tests are done after the unit root tests, and further, the Vector Error Correction (VEC) model shows that the changes in Fiji’s CPI are Granger caused by the long-term trends in all other variables, and the CPI in Australia, and devaluation-year dummies are used as exogenous variables in the VEC model, and the changes in exchange rate and changes in demand shocks are the independent variables but made endogenous in the VEC model. The impulse response function also shows that due to the exchange rate depreciation, inflation has increased for many years in Fiji. The policy implication of our study is that as a monetary policy instrument, the flexibility of the exchange rate policy is indispensable for Fiji to appropriately absorb the international supply and price shocks
A study of the pass - through effects of exchange rates and international prices shocks on inflation in the Fiji Islands
The main purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the exchange rates,international prices, and the demand shocks on inflation in Fiji Island. The study covers the annual data from 1975 to 2010.The variables are transformed into changes/per cent and then Ordinary Least Squares methodology (OLS) is used. The appropriateness of the OLS assumptions is tested including the normality of the residuals, autocorrelations,heteroskedasticity and functional forms. The main findings are that the Fijian dollar depreciation increases, the international price shocks in the form of Australian consumer prices increase, the Keynesian demand shocks increase, and the devaluation events increase the consumer price inflation in Fiji. As a monetary policy instrument the flexibility of the exchange rate policy is indispensable for Fiji to absorb appropriately the international supply and price shocks.
We have been able to include the international supply shocks, the domestic demand shocks, the exchange rates, and devaluation dummies in our model. Though we have used a simple OLS model, the originality of our study is the comprehensiveness of the theoretical variables in our model. This study will have an important implication for the small open economy of Fiji especially its exchange rate policy
Robust Platelet Logistics Planning in Disaster Relief Operations Under Uncertainty: a Coordinated Approach
© 2017, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC. Resource sharing, as a coordination mechanism, can mitigate disruptions in supply and changes in demand. It is particularly crucial for platelets because they have a short lifespan and need to be transferred and allocated within a limited time to prevent waste or shortages. Thus, a coordinated model comprised of a mixed vertical-horizontal structure, for the logistics of platelets, is proposed for disaster relief operations in the response phase. The aim of this research is to reduce the wastage and shortage of platelets due to their critical role in wound healing. We present a bi-objective location-allocation robust possibilistic programming model for designing a two-layer coordinated organization strategy for multi-type blood-derived platelets under demand uncertainty. Computational results, derived using a heuristic ε-constraint algorithm, are reported and discussed to show the applicability of the proposed model. The experimental results indicate that surpluses and shortages in platelets remarkably declined following instigation of a coordinated disaster relief operation
Joint Verification and Reranking for Open Fact Checking Over Tables
Structured information is an important knowledge source for automatic verification of factual claims. Nevertheless, the majority of existing research into this task has focused on textual data, and the few recent inquiries into structured data have been for the closed-domain setting where appropriate evidence for each claim is assumed to have already been retrieved. In this paper, we investigate verification over structured data in the open-domain setting, introducing a joint reranking-and-verification model which fuses evidence documents in the verification component. Our open-domain model achieves performance comparable to the closed-domain state-of-the-art on the TabFact dataset, and demonstrates performance gains from the inclusion of multiple tables as well as a significant improvement over a heuristic retrieval baseline
Interconnections : an analysis of disassemblable building connection systems towards a circular economy
This study investigates the interconnection methods used to create a circular economy building featuring modularity and designed for disassembly and relocation. Designing modular buildings for disassembly and reuse can decrease waste production and material depletion, in line with the circular economy framework. Disassemblable buildings require connections to be easily accessible. Visible connections may be unpopular features; however, concealing these, yet leaving these accessible, presents a substantial design challenge. This study demonstrates solutions to this challenge by analyzing a purposely designed case study: the Legacy Living Lab. The challenges of disguising and sealing, such as by waterproofing, two types of connections are analysed: structural and non-structural. This study details the materials and connections used across the two analyzed connection types and compares the weights and reusability of components. Thus, a necessary case study is provided for practitioners to advance circular economy theory in the building industry. Notably, all connections in the Legacy Living Lab can be easily accessed with standard building tools, facilitating its disassembly and fostering component reusability
