To prey or not to prey? Welfare and individual losses in a conflict model
We analyse a generalised form of the Hirshleifer-Skaperdas predation model. In such a model agents have a choice between productive work and appropriation. We suggest that such a model can usefully be thought of as a continuous form of the Prisoners' Dilemma. We present closed form solutions for the interior equilibria and comparative statics for all Cournot equilibria and analyse the social welfare losses arising from predation. We show that predation is minimised under two quite different regimes, one in which claiming is very ineffective and another in which one of the players becomes marginalised. The worst outcomes seem to arise when claiming is effective, but inequality in power is significant but not extreme. This, arguably, is the situation in a number of transition societies
Federal Civil Procedure-Discovery-Availability of Attorney-Client Privilege to Corporations
During the pre-trial stage of a civil antitrust suit, plaintiff sought inspection of certain documents in the files of the corporate defendants\u27 outside counsel. The defendant contended that these documents were protected from discovery by the attorney-client privilege. Upon motion for inspection, held, granted. The attorney-client privilege is not available to any of the corporate parties in this action. Radiant Burners, Inc. v. American Gas Ass\u27n, 207 F. Supp. 771, aff\u27d on rehearing, 209 F. Design of a Single Span Nine Metre Long Glass Bridge
Halcrow Yolles was retained to conceptualize ideas for a glass bridge designed tospan across the main lobby of a new hotel. Its defining feature, laminated glassbalustrades, span continuously over the entire nine metre opening. Design work forthe bridge was completed using a finite element model of the entire bridge allowingfor a detailed analysis of stress concentrations in the glass at bearing boltconnections. Special attention was paid to the transportation and erection of thebridge to ensure that the large panels remained intact. This project demonstrateshow state of the art glass production techniques in combination with leading edgedesign methodology can lead to architecturally interesting structures
