Using ultrasound not as a diagnostic test, but instead as a component of the physical exam, may allow it to become the stethoscope of the 21st century

Hybrid Pixel Detector Development for the Linear Collider Vertex Tracker
In order to fully exploit the physics potential of the future high energy
e+e- linear collider, a Vertex Tracker able to provide particle track
extrapolation with very high resolution is needed. Hybrid Si pixel sensors are
an attractive technology due to their fast read-out capabilities and radiation
hardness. A novel pixel detector layout with interleaved cells has been
developed to improve the single point resolution. Results of the
characterisation of the first processed prototypes by electrostatic

Artifacts with uneven sampling of red noise
The vast majority of sampling systems operate in a standard way: at each tick
of a fixed-frequency master clock a digitizer reads out a voltage that
corresponds to the value of some physical quantity and translates it into a bit
pattern that is either transmitted, stored, or processed right away. Thus
signal sampling at evenly spaced time intervals is the rule: however this is
not always the case, and uneven sampling is sometimes unavoidable.
While periodic or quasi-periodic uneven sampling of a deterministic signal
can reasonably be expected to produce artifacts, it is much less obvious that
the same happens with noise: here I show that this is indeed the case only for
long-memory noise processes, i.e., power-law noises with . The resulting artifacts are usually a nuisance although they can be
eliminated with a proper processing of the signal samples, but they could also
be turned to advantage and used to encode information.Comment: 5 figure

Gestational weight gain and child adiposity at age 3 years
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to examine the associations of gestational weight gain with child adiposity. STUDY DESIGN Using multivariable regression, we studied associations of total gestational weight gain and weight gain according to 1990 Institute of Medicine guidelines with child outcomes among 1044 mother-child pairs in Project Viva. RESULTS Greater weight gain was associated with higher child body mass index z-score (0.13 units per 5 kg [95% CI, 0.08, 0.19]), sum of subscapular and triceps skinfold thicknesses (0.26 mm [95% CI, 0.02, 0.51]), and systolic blood pressure (0.60 mm Hg [95% CI, 0.06, 1.13]). Compared with inadequate weight gain (0.17 units [95% CI, 0.01, 0.33]), women with adequate or excessive weight gain had children with higher body mass index z-scores (0.47 [95% CI, 0.37, 0.57] and 0.52 [95% CI, 0.44, 0.61], respectively) and risk of overweight (odds ratios, 3.77 [95% CI: 1.38, 10.27] and 4.35 [95% CI: 1.69, 11.24]). CONCLUSION New recommendations for gestational weight gain may be required in this era of epidemic obesity
Ultrasound confirmation of guidewire position may eliminate accidental arterial dilatation during central venous cannulation
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Ultrasound guidance during central line insertion has significantly reduced complications associated with this procedure and has led to it being incorporated as standard of care in many institutions. However, inadvertent arterial penetration and dilation remains a problem despite ultrasound guidance and can result in significant morbidity and even mortality. Dynamic ultrasound confirmation of guidewire position within the vein prior to dilation may help to prevent and even eliminate this feared complication.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A prospectively collected database of central line insertions for one author utilizing this novel technique was retrospectively reviewed for all incidents of arterial dilation over a period from September 2008 to January 2010.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>During the study period 53 central lines were inserted with no incidents of arterial dilation.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Ultrasound confirmation of guidewire position has the potential to reduce or eliminate the morbidity and mortality of arterial dilation during central line placement.</p
Achieving Cardiovascular Health in Young AdulthoodâWhich Adolescent Factors Matter?
AbstractPurposeTo examine associations of adolescent body mass index (BMI), tobacco use, and physical activity with optimal physiologic cardiovascular health (CVH) in adulthood.MethodsData were from 12,139 participants in Waves I (1995â1996) and IV (2007â2008) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. We defined optimal CVH as normal blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol without diabetes or cardiovascular disease. We used logistic regression to estimate odds of having optimal CVH at ages 24â32 years (Wave IV) according to BMI category, smoking status, and physical activity at ages 11â19 years (Wave I).ResultsFew young adults (16%) had optimal CVH. Adolescents with normal BMI were more than twice as likely to have optimal young adult CVH compared to those who were obese (adjusted odds ratio, 2.77; 95% confidence interval, 1.97â3.89). Adolescent smoking and physical activity did not predict young adult CVH.ConclusionsLower adolescent BMI is associated with young adult CVH
