Cultural self-assessment and intersectionality: decolonizing tools in psychological teaching and training

    Get PDF
Cultural self-evaluation and intersectionality are proposed as strategies to facilitate the integration of the decolonizing perspective in the field of psychology. Cultural self-assessment advocates the sincere and in-depth examination of the influence of dominant cultural messages on gender, age, ethnicity, ability, social class and religion, among others, in our beliefs, attitudes and actions. Intersectionality considers the crossing or intersection of the different dimensions of social diversity, thus presenting a much more complex and dynamic analysis compared to the traditional one-dimensional perspective. The decolonizing perspective welcomes and unifies a diversity of critical movements that advocate the deconstruction of the dominant discourses in order to develop a psychology anchored in the values of justice and social inclusion. The strategies of cultural selfevaluation and intersectionality reaffirm these values and are fundamental for the development of a decolonizing perspective.Dossier: Psicología, colonialidad y procesos de decolonización.Facultad de Psicologí

Assessing the response of ground-dwelling beetles communities to different land-uses in Mediterranea cork oak systems

In our study, we assessed the response of beetles communities at low taxonomical resolution to different Mediterranean cork oak land-use systems. Spatial variation of dung-beetles communities was also analyzed because of their potential role as ecological indicators in grazed areas

Modelling the evolution of distributions : an application to major league baseball

    Get PDF
We develop Bayesian techniques for modelling the evolution of entire distributions over time and apply them to the distribution of team performance in Major League baseball for the period 1901-2000. Such models offer insight into many key issues (e.g. competitive balance) in a way that regression-based models cannot. The models involve discretizing the distribution and then modelling the evolution of the bins over time through transition probability matrices. We allow for these matrices to vary over time and across teams. We find that, with one exception, the transition probability matrices (and, hence, competitive balance) have been remarkably constant across time and over teams. The one exception is the Yankees, who have outperformed all other teams

A New Calibrated Bayesian Internal Goodness-of-Fit Method: Sampled Posterior p-Values as Simple and General p-Values That Allow Double Use of the Data

Background: Recent approaches mixing frequentist principles with Bayesian inference propose internal goodness-of-fit (GOF) p-values that might be valuable for critical analysis of Bayesian statistical models. However, GOF p-values developed to date only have known probability distributions under restrictive conditions. As a result, no known GOF p-value has a known probability distribution for any discrepancy function. Methodology/Principal Findings: We show mathematically that a new GOF p-value, called the sampled posterior p-value (SPP), asymptotically has a uniform probability distribution whatever the discrepancy function. In a moderate finite sample context, simulations also showed that the SPP appears stable to relatively uninformative misspecifications of the prior distribution. Conclusions/Significance: These reasons, together with its numerical simplicity, make the SPP a better canonical GOF p-value than existing GOF p-values

Bayesian Inference for Structural Vector Autoregressions Identified by Markov-Switching Heteroskedasticity

In this study, Bayesian inference is developed for structural vector autoregressive models in which the structural parameters are identified via Markov-switching heteroskedasticity. In such a model, restrictions that are just-identifying in the homoskedastic case, become over-identifying and can be tested. A set of parametric restrictions is derived under which the structural matrix is globally or partially identified and a Savage-Dickey density ratio is used to assess the validity of the identification conditions. The latter is facilitated by analytical derivations that make the computations fast and numerical standard errors small. As an empirical example, monetary models are compared using heteroskedasticity as an additional device for identification. The empirical results support models with money in the interest rate reaction function.Comment: Keywords: Identification Through Heteroskedasticity, Bayesian Hypotheses Assessment, Markov-switching Models, Mixture Models, Regime Chang
