Pre-processing for Triangulation of Probabilistic Networks

The currently most efficient algorithm for inference with a probabilistic network builds upon a triangulation of a network's graph. In this paper, we show that pre-processing can help in finding good triangulations forprobabilistic networks, that is, triangulations with a minimal maximum clique size. We provide a set of rules for stepwise reducing a graph, without losing optimality. This reduction allows us to solve the triangulation problem on a smaller graph. From the smaller graph's triangulation, a triangulation of the original graph is obtained by reversing the reduction steps. Our experimental results show that the graphs of some well-known real-life probabilistic networks can be triangulated optimally just by preprocessing; for other networks, huge reductions in their graph's size are obtained.Comment: Appears in Proceedings of the Seventeenth Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence (UAI2001

Background An updated version of the Dutch multidisdplinaiy guideline on schizophrenia was published in 2012. aim We aim to provide an overview of the psychosocial interventions and nursing care which, according to the guideline, should be included in basic care programmes for patients with schizophrenia. We consider which interventions are effective and which are optional. In addition, we argue for continuous updating of the guideline so that it rejlects current developments. method We conducted a systematic review on the basis of specific predefined search terms. We included articles published up to February 2010. We used the methodfor evidence-based guideline development in order to formulate treatment recommendations. conclusion Cognitive behavioural therapy and Jamily interventions are scientifically proven interventions that should be included in the care programmes. Although there is no clear evidence that psycho-education is effective, it is nevertheless recommended. Optional interventions are peer support groups and, in the case of negative symptoms, psychomotor therapy. Although scientific evidence concerning nursing care is limited, we do make some recommendations. We are strongly in/avour of a 'living guideline' that is constantly developed and updated

We describe a new electron beam lithography method for producing structures with lateral sizes smaller than the incident beam diameter. These patterns are transferred into GaAs/AlGaAs, InGaAs/GaAs and InGaAs/InP quantum well heterostructures using chemically assisted ion beam etching, thereby forming uniform arrays of pillars with lateral dimensions at or below 10 nm. Critical Infrastructures You Can Trust: Where Telecommunications Fits

This paper discusses two NISs: the public telephone network (PTN) and the Internet. Being themselves large and complex NISs, they not only merit study in their own right but can help us to understand some of the technical problems faced by the developers and operators of other NISs. In addition, the high cost of building a global communications infrastructure from the ground up implies that one or both of these two networks is likely to furnish communications services for most other NISs. Therefore, an understanding of the vulnerabilties of the PTN and Internet informs the assessment of the trustworthiness of other NISs. Ideas for improving the trustworthiness of the PTN and Internet are also proposed, both for the short-term (by improved use of existing technologies and procedures) and for the long-term (by identifying some areas where the state-of-the-art is inadequate and research is therefore needed). Finally, some observations are offered about Internet telephony and the use of the Internet for critical infrastructures
