X-ray spectrum of the high polarization quasar PKS 1510-089
We present results on the X-ray spectra of the radio-loud, high-polarization
quasar, PKS 1510-089, based on new data obtained using ASCA, and from archival
ROSAT data. The X-ray spectrum obtained by ASCA is unusually hard, with the
photon index=1.30+-0.06, while the (non-simultaneous) ROSAT data indicate a
steeper spectrum (1.9+-0.3). The X-ray flux at 1 keV is within 10% during both
observations. A break in the underlying continuum at about 0.7 keV is
suggested. Flat X-ray spectra seem to be the characteristic of high
polarization quasars, and their spectra also appear to be harder than that of
the other radio-loud but low-polarization quasars. The multiwavelength spectrum
of PKS 1510-089 is similar to many other gamma-ray blazars, suggesting the
emission is dominated by that from a relativistic jet. A big blue-bump is also
seen in its multiwavelength spectrum, suggesting the presence of a strong

Distributed CSMA with pairwise coding
We consider distributed strategies for joint routing, scheduling, and network coding to maximize throughput in wireless networks. Network coding allows for an increase in network throughput under certain routing conditions. We previously developed a centralized control policy to jointly optimize for routing and scheduling combined with a simple network coding strategy using max-weight scheduling (MWS) [9]. In this work we focus on pairwise network coding and develop a distributed carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) policy that supports all arrival rates allowed by the network subject to the pairwise coding constraint. We extend our scheme to optimize for packet overhearing to increase the number of beneficial coding opportunities. Simulation results show that the CSMA strategy yields the same throughput as the optimal centralized policy of [9], but at the cost of increased delay. Moreover, overhearing provides up to an additional 25% increase in throughput on random topologies.United States. Dept. of Defense. Chemistry and radiative shielding in star forming galactic disks
To understand the conditions under which dense, molecular gas is able to form
within a galaxy, we post-process a series of three-dimensional
galactic-disk-scale simulations with ray-tracing based radiative transfer and
chemical network integration to compute the equilibrium chemical and thermal
state of the gas. In performing these simulations we vary a number of
parameters, such as the ISRF strength, vertical scale height of stellar
sources, cosmic ray flux, to gauge the sensitivity of our results to these
variations. Self-shielding permits significant molecular hydrogen (H2)
abundances in dense filaments around the disk midplane, accounting for
approximately ~10-15% of the total gas mass. Significant CO fractions only form
in the densest, n>~10^3 cm^-3, gas where a combination of dust, H2, and
self-shielding attenuate the FUV background. We additionally compare these
ray-tracing based solutions to photochemistry with complementary models where
photo-shielding is accounted for with locally computed prescriptions. With some
exceptions, these local models for the radiative shielding length perform
reasonably well at reproducing the distribution and amount of molecular gas as
compared with a detailed, global ray tracing calculation. Specifically, an
approach based on the Jeans Length with a T=40K temperature cap performs the
best in regards to a number of different quantitative measures based on the H2

XTE J1550-564: INTEGRAL Observations of a Failed Outburst
The well known black-hole X-ray binary transient XTE J1550-564 underwent an
outburst during the spring of 2003 which was substantially underluminous in
comparison to previous periods of peak activity in that source. In addition,
our analysis shows that it apparently remained in the hard spectral state over
the duration of that outburst. This is again in sharp contrast to major
outbursts of that source in 1998/1999 during which it exhibited an irregular
light curve, multiple state changes and collimated outflows. This leads us to
classify it as a "failed outburst." We present the results of our study of the
spring 2003 event including light curves based on observations from both
INTEGRAL and RXTE. In addition, we studied the evolution of the high-energy
3-300 keV continuum spectrum using data obtained with three main instruments on
INTEGRAL. These spectra are consistent with typical low-hard-state thermal
Comptonization emission. We also consider the 2003 event in the context of a
multi-source, multi-event period-peak luminosity diagram in which it is a clear
outlyer. We then consider the possibility that the 2003 event was due to a
discrete accretion event rather than a limit-cycle instablility. In that
context, we apply model fitting to derive the timescale for viscous propagation

The First INTEGRAL AGN Catalog
We present the first INTEGRAL AGN catalog, based on observations performed
from launch of the mission in October 2002 until January 2004. The catalog
includes 42 AGN, of which 10 are Seyfert 1, 17 are Seyfert 2, and 9 are
intermediate Seyfert 1.5. The fraction of blazars is rather small with 5
detected objects, and only one galaxy cluster and no star-burst galaxies have
been detected so far. A complete subset consists of 32 AGN with a significance
limit of 7 sigma in the INTEGRAL/ISGRI 20-40 keV data. Although the sample is
not flux limited, the distribution of sources shows a ratio of obscured to
unobscured AGN of 1.5 - 2.0, consistent with luminosity dependent unified
models for AGN. Only four Compton-thick AGN are found in the sample. Based on
the INTEGRAL data presented here, the Seyfert 2 spectra are slightly harder
(Gamma = 1.95 +- 0.01) than Seyfert 1.5 (Gamma = 2.10 +- 0.02) and Seyfert 1

Optimal routing and scheduling for a simple network coding scheme
We consider jointly optimal routing, scheduling, and network coding strategies to maximize throughput in wireless networks. While routing and scheduling techniques for wireless networks have been studied for decades, network coding is a relatively new technique that allows for an increase in throughput under certain topological and routing conditions. In this work we introduce k-tuple coding, a generalization of pairwise coding with next-hop decodability, and fully characterize the region of arrival rates for which the network queues can be stabilized under this coding strategy. We propose a dynamic control policy for routing, scheduling, and k-tuple coding, and prove that our policy is throughput optimal subject to the k-tuple coding constraint. We provide analytical bounds on the coding gain of our policy, and present numerical results to support our analytical findings. We show that most of the gains are achieved with pairwise coding, and that the coding gain is greater under 2-hop than 1-hop interference. Simulations show that under 2-hop interference our policy yields median throughput gains of 31% beyond optimal scheduling and routing on random topologies with 16 nodes.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (grant CNS-0915988)United States. The Nature of the Secondary Star in the Black Hole X-Ray Transient V616 Mon (=A0620-00)
We have used NIRSPEC on Keck II to obtain -band spectroscopy of the low
mass X-ray binary V616 Mon (= A062000). V616 Mon is the proto-typical soft
x-ray transient containing a black hole primary. As such it is important to
constrain the masses of the binary components. The modeling of the infrared
observations of ellipsoidal variations in this system lead to a derived mass of
11.0 M_{\sun} for the black hole. The validity of this derivation has been
called into question due to the possiblity that the secondary star's spectral
energy distribution is contaminated by accretion disk emission (acting to
dilute the variations). Our new -band spectrum of V616 Mon reveals a
late-type K dwarf secondary star, but one that has very weak CO
absorption features. Comparison of V616 Mon with SS Cyg leads us to estimate
that the accretion disk supplies only a small amount of -band flux, and the
ellipsoidal variations are not seriously contaminated. If true, the derived
orbital inclination of V616 Mon is not greatly altered, and the mass of the
black hole remains large. A preliminary stellar atmosphere model for the
-band spectrum of V616 Mon reveals that the carbon abundance is
approximately 50% of the solar value. We conclude that the secondary star in
V616 Mon has either suffered serious contamination from the accretion of
supernova ejecta that created the black hole primary, or it is the stripped
remains of a formerly more massive secondary star, one in which the CNO cycle

An overlay architecture for throughput optimal multipath routing
Legacy networks are often designed to operate with simple single-path routing, like shortest-path, which is known to be throughput suboptimal. On the other hand, previously proposed throughput optimal policies (i.e., backpressure) require every device in the network to make dynamic routing decisions. In this work, we study an overlay architecture for dynamic routing such that only a subset of devices (overlay nodes) need to make dynamic routing decisions. We determine the essential collection of nodes that must bifurcate traffic for achieving the maximum multicommodity network throughput. We apply our optimal node placement algorithm to several graphs and the results show that a small fraction of overlay nodes is sufficient for achieving maximum throughput. Finally, we propose a heuristic policy (OBP), which dynamically controls traffic bifurcations at overlay nodes. In all studied simulation scenarios, OBP not only achieves full throughput, but also reduces delay in comparison to the throughput optimal backpressure routing.United States. The Concordance Cosmic Star Formation Rate: Implications from and for the Supernova Neutrino and Gamma Ray Backgrounds
We constrain the Cosmic Star Formation Rate (CSFR) by requiring that massive
stars produce the observed UV, optical, and IR light while at the same time not
overproduce the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background as bounded by
Super-Kamiokande. With the massive star component so constrained we then show
that a reasonable choice of stellar Initial Mass Function and other parameters
results in SNIa rates and iron yields in good agreement with data. In this way
we define a `concordance' CSFR that predicts the optical SNII rate and the SNIa
contribution to the MeV Cosmic Gamma-Ray Background. The CSFR constrained to
reproduce these and other proxies of intermediate and massive star formation is
more clearly delineated than if it were measured by any one technique and has
the following testable consequences: (1) SNIa contribute only a small fraction
of the MeV Cosmic Gamma-Ray Background, (2) massive star core-collapse is
nearly always accompanied by a successful optical SNII, and (3) the Diffuse
Supernova Neutrino Background is tantalizingly close to detectability.Comment: Improved discussion. Version accepted for publication in JCA

Pretreatment, Psychological, and Behavioral Predictors of Weight Outcomes Among Lifestyle Intervention Participants in the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP)
OBJECTIVE To identify the most important pretreatment characteristics and changes in psychological and behavioral factors that predict weight outcomes in the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Approximately 25% of DPP lifestyle intervention participants (n = 274) completed questionnaires to assess weight history and psychological and behavioral factors at baseline and 6 months after completion of the 16-session core curriculum. The change in variables from baseline to 6 months was assessed with t tests. Multivariate models using hierarchical logistic regression assessed the association of weight outcomes at end of study with each demographic, weight loss history, psychological, and behavioral factor. RESULTS At end of study, 40.5% had achieved the DPP 7% weight loss goal. Several baseline measures (older age, race, older age when first overweight, fewer self-implemented weight loss attempts, greater exercise self-efficacy, greater dietary restraint, fewer fat-related dietary behaviors, more sedentary activity level) were independent predictors of successful end-of-study weight loss with the DPP lifestyle program. The DPP core curriculum resulted in significant improvements in many psychological and behavioral targets. Changes in low-fat diet self-efficacy and dietary restraint skills predicted better long-term weight loss, and the association of low-fat diet self-efficacy with weight outcomes was explained by dietary behaviors. CONCLUSIONS Health care providers who translate the DPP lifestyle intervention should be aware of pretreatment characteristics that may hamper or enhance weight loss, consider prioritizing strategies to improve low-fat diet self-efficacy and dietary restraint skills, and examine whether taking these actions improves weight loss outcomes
