Upheaval in cancer care during the COVID-19 outbreak
On Monday, 23 March 2020, Nigeria recorded its first mortality from the novel global COVID-19 outbreak. Before this, the country reported 36 confirmed cases (at the time of writing) and has discharged home two cases after weeks of care at a government-approved isolation center in Lagos State. This first mortality was that of a 67-year-old man with a history of multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. He was undergoing chemotherapy and had just returned to Nigeria following medical treatment in the United Kingdom. The novel COVID-19 pandemic has grounded several global activities including the provision of health care serves to people with chronic conditions such as cancer. Evidence from China suggests that cancer patients with COVID-19 infection are a vulnerable group, with a higher risk of severe illness resulting in intensive care unit admissions or death particularly if they received chemotherapy or surgery. This letter is an attempt to suggests practicable interventions such as the use of existing digital health platforms to limit patients' and oncology professionals’ physical interaction as a way of reducing the risk of COVID-19 infection transmission amongst cancer patients and oncologists, as well as outlining effective strategies to ensure that cancer care is not completely disrupted during the outbreak
Newtonian View of General Relativistic Stars
Although general relativistic cosmological solutions, even in the presence of
pressure, can be mimicked by using neo-Newtonian hydrodynamics, it is not clear
whether there exists the same Newtonian correspondence for spherical static
configurations. General relativity solutions for stars are known as the
Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations. On the other hand, the Newtonian
description does not take into account the total pressure effects and therefore
can not be used in strong field regimes. We discuss how to incorporate pressure
in the stellar equilibrium equations within the neo-Newtonian framework. We
compare the Newtonian, neo-Newtonian and the full relativistic theory by
solving the equilibrium equations for both three approaches and calculating the

Ebola virus disease epidemic in West Africa: Lessons learned and issues arising from West African countries

All rights reserved.The current Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak ravaging three nations in West Africa has affected more than 14,000 persons and killed over 5,000. It is the longest and most widely spread Ebola epidemic ever seen. At the time of this overview (written November 2014), having affected eight different nations, Nigeria and Senegal were able to control and eliminate the virus within a record time. Ghana has successfully, to date, kept the virus away from the country, despite economic and social relationships with affected nations. What lessons can we learn from Nigeria, Senegal and Ghana in the current epidemic? How can the world improve the health systems in low- and middle-income countries to effectively manage future outbreaks? Recently, the Royal College of Physicians launched a new partnership with the West African College of Physicians to curtail the effects of HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis in the region.
