Communication for Peaceful Social Change and Global Citizenry
The adoption of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the United Nations (UN) in 2015
represents a universal call to action involving multiple international actors for the purpose of eradicating
poverty, improving living conditions and promoting peace. This entry provides a theoretical overview of
the contributions of scholars and practitioners who highlight the importance of a transformative,
educational and emancipatory communication by different social actors to establish the main lines of
action for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This communicative model involves the
coordination of actors and strategies, both short- and long-term, cross-cutting actions and discourses to
build social, cultural and political settings based on the criteria of peace, equality, social justice and
human rights. Specifically, this entails a contribution to the objectives set out in SDG 16, “Peace, Justice
and Strong Institutions”, given that the proposed theoretical framework is grounded in Communication for
Peace and Communication for Social Change, and includes a systematization of different strategies and
experiences from a variety of social issuers, mainly institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
or social movements, aimed at promoting peaceful and inclusive societies. Specifically, communication
for peaceful social change and global citizenry contributes to the achievement of specific SDG 16

Climate change is arguably the single most dominant environmental threat facing humanity. Its manifestations, particularly through rising temperatures, changing rainfall, sea-level rise and increasing droughts and floods have the potential to adversely impact natural ecosystems (such as forests, grasslands, rivers and oceans) and socioeconomic systems (such as food production, fisheries and coastal settlements). This is adding additional stresses to the ecosystem services which form a substantial source of income to the rural inhabitants. It is most proximate and inextricably linked to well-being, development and economic growth which are part of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which ran from 2000 to 2015
BCDIN3D regulates tRNAHis 3' fragment processing.
5' ends are important for determining the fate of RNA molecules. BCDIN3D is an RNA phospho-methyltransferase that methylates the 5' monophosphate of specific RNAs. In order to gain new insights into the molecular function of BCDIN3D, we performed an unbiased analysis of its interacting RNAs by Thermostable Group II Intron Reverse Transcriptase coupled to next generation sequencing (TGIRT-seq). Our analyses showed that BCDIN3D interacts with full-length phospho-methylated tRNAHis and miR-4454. Interestingly, we found that miR-4454 is not synthesized from its annotated genomic locus, which is a primer-binding site for an endogenous retrovirus, but rather by Dicer cleavage of mature tRNAHis. Sequence analysis revealed that miR-4454 is identical to the 3' end of tRNAHis. Moreover, we were able to generate this 'miRNA' in vitro through incubation of mature tRNAHis with Dicer. As found previously for several pre-miRNAs, a 5'P-tRNAHis appears to be a better substrate for Dicer cleavage than a phospho-methylated tRNAHis. Moreover, tRNAHis 3'-fragment/'miR-4454' levels increase in cells depleted for BCDIN3D. Altogether, our results show that in addition to microRNAs, BCDIN3D regulates tRNAHis 3'-fragment processing without negatively affecting tRNAHis's canonical function of aminoacylation
