Analysis of The Hipparcos Measurements of HD10697 - A Mass Determination of a Brown-Dwarf Secondary
HD10697 is a nearby main-sequence star around which a planet candidate has
recently been discovered by means of radial-velocity measurements (Vogt et al.
1999, submitted to ApJ). The stellar orbit has a period of about three years,
the secondary minimum mass is 6.35 Jupiter masses and the minimum semi-major
axis is 0.36 milli-arc-sec (mas). Using the Hipparcos data of HD10697 together
with the spectroscopic elements of Vogt et al. (1999) we found a semi-major
axis of 2.1 +/- 0.7 mas, implying a mass of 38 +/- 13 Jupiter masses for the
unseen companion. We therefore suggest that the secondary of HD10697 is
probably a brown dwarf, orbiting around its parent star at a distance of 2 AU.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, LaTex, aastex, accepted for publication by ApJ

A Concept for an STJ-based Spectrograph
We describe a multi-order spectrograph concept suitable for 8m-class
telescopes, using the intrinsic spectral resolution of Superconducting
Tunneling Junction detectors to sort the spectral orders. The spectrograph
works at low orders, 1-5 or 1-6, and provides spectral coverage with a
resolving power of R~8000 from the atmospheric cutoff at 320 nm to the long
wavelength end of the infrared H or K band at 1800 nm or 2400 nm. We calculate
that the spectrograph would provide substantial throughput and wavelength
coverage, together with high time resolution and sufficient dynamic range. The
concept uses currently available technology, or technologies with short
development horizons, restricting the spatial sampling to two linear arrays;
however an upgrade path to provide more spatial sampling is identified. All of
the other challenging aspects of the concept - the cryogenics, thermal baffling

Diseases of winter linseed : occurrence, effects and importance
In 1998, a survey of the incidence and severity of diseases was carried out on 30 crops of winter linseed at early flowering and again at crop maturity. Five crops each were selected in south west, east, east Midlands, west Midlands and north of England and from Scotland. Crops were predominantly cv. Oliver (90% crops), grown from certified seed (83%) and sown in September (97%). Pasmo (Mycosphaerella) was the most important disease, affecting leaves of 73% crops at early flowering and 90% crops at maturity. Powdery mildew (70% crops), Alternaria (30% crops) on leaves and Botrytis on capsules (70% crops) were also common. Regional differences were apparent for powdery mildew, which was present in all regions except the southwest, whilst Alternaria predominated in the Midlands. Half of the crops surveyed had received fungicide sprays, but this appeared to have made limited impact on disease severity. Astrometric signal profile fitting for Gaia
A tool for representation of the one-dimensional astrometric signal of Gaia
is described and investigated in terms of fit discrepancy and astrometric
performance with respect to number of parameters required. The proposed basis
function is based on the aberration free response of the ideal telescope and
its derivatives, weighted by the source spectral distribution. The influence of
relative position of the detector pixel array with respect to the optical image
is analysed, as well as the variation induced by the source spectral emission.
The number of parameters required for micro-arcsec level consistency of the
reconstructed function with the detected signal is found to be 11. Some
considerations are devoted to the issue of calibration of the instrument
response representation, taking into account the relevant aspects of source
spectrum and focal plane sampling. Additional investigations and other

First Astronomical Application of a Cryogenic TES Spectrophotometer
We report on the first astronomical observations with a photon counting pixel
detector that provides arrival time- (delta t = 100ns) and energy- (delta
E_gamma < 0.15eV) resolved measurements from the near IR through the near UV.
Our test observations were performed by coupling this Transition Edge Sensor
(TES) device to a 0.6m telescope; we have obtained the first simultaneous
optical near-IR phase-resolved spectra of the Crab pulsar. A varying infrared
turnover gives evidence of self-absorption in the pulsar plasma. The potential
of such detectors in imaging arrays from a space platform are briefly

SDSS J080531.84+481233.0: An Unresolved L Dwarf/T Dwarf Binary
SDSS J080531.84+481233.0 is a peculiar L-type dwarf that exhibits unusually
blue near-infrared and mid-infrared colors and divergent optical (L4) and
near-infrared (L9.5) spectral classifications. These peculiar spectral traits
have been variously attributed to condensate cloud effects or subsolar
metallicity. Here I present an improved near-infrared spectrum of this source
which further demonstrates the presence of weak CH4 absorption at 1.6 micron
but no corresponding band at 2.2 micron. It is shown that these features can be
collectively reproduced by the combined light spectrum of a binary with L4.5
and T5 components, as deduced by spectral template matching. Thus, SDSS
J080531.84+481233.0 appears to be a new low-mass binary straddling the L
dwarf/T dwarf transition, an evolutionary phase for brown dwarfs that remains
poorly understood by current theoretical models. The case of SDSS
J080531.84+481233.0 further illustrates how a select range of L dwarf/T dwarf
binaries could be identified and characterized without the need for high
angular resolution imaging or radial velocity monitoring, potentially
alleviating some of the detection biases and limitations inherent to such

Chromaticity in all-reflective telescopes for astrometry
Chromatic effects are usually associated with refractive optics, so
reflective telescopes are assumed to be free from them. We show that
all-reflective optics still bears significant levels of such perturbations,
which is especially critical to modern micro-arcsecond astrometric experiments.
We analyze the image formation and measurement process to derive a precise
definition of the chromatic variation of the image position, and we evaluate
the key aspects of optical design with respect to chromaticity. The fundamental
requirement related to chromaticity is the symmetry of the optical design and
of the wavefront errors. Finally, we address some optical engineering issues,
such as manufacturing and alignment, providing recommendations to minimize the
degradation that chromaticity introduces into astrometry.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
An X-Ray Jet from a White Dwarf - Detection of the Collimated Outflow from CH Cygni with Chandra
Most symbiotic stars consist of a white dwarf accreting material from the
wind of a red giant. An increasing number of these objects have been found to
produce jets. Analysis of archival Chandra data of the symbiotic system CH
Cygni reveals faint extended emission to the south, aligned with the optical
and radio jets seen in earlier HST and VLA observations. CH Cygni thus contains
only the second known white dwarf with an X-ray jet, after R Aquarii. The
X-rays from symbiotic-star jets appear to be produced when jet material is
shock-heated following collision with surrounding gas, as with the outflows
