    A Bayesian approach to the aperture problem of 3D motion perception

    We suggest a geometric-statistical approach that can be ap- plied to the 3D aperture problem of motion perception. In simulations and psychophysical experiments we study per- ceived 3D motion direction in a binocular viewing geometry by systematically varying 3D orientation of a line stimulus moving behind a circular aperture. Although motion direc- tion is inherently ambiguous perceived directions show sys- tematic trends and a Bayesian model with a prior for small depth followed by slow motion in 3D gives reasonable fits to individual data. We conclude that the visual system tries to minimize velocity in 3D but that earlier disparity processing strongly influences perceived 3D motion direction. We discuss implications for the integration of disparity and motion cues in the human visual system

    The Relationship between Public Attitudes of Welfare Policy and U.S. Economic Downturn, Economic Ascent, and Economic Compliancy

    My research explores the relationship between public attitudes towards welfare policy and the condition of the U.S. economy. Specifically, I was interested in whether attitudes regarding public welfare policy would improve during an economic crisis or deteriorate. I have also found several relationships that predict the support or opposition of welfare spending for particular groups. To determine these relationships, I analyzed survey data from the General Social Survey (GSS) to determine the relationships between public opinion towards welfare policy. I analyzed data of self-reported information from 1974 to 2014, and this data set included approximately 60,000 respondents. The variables I tested included: respondent gender, respondent age, respondent race, respondent party affiliation, and respondent education level. Additionally, to determine the relationships between public attitudes, welfare policy, and the state of the U.S. economy, I included three hypotheses: a) Hypothesis 1: There is a relationship between public attitudes of welfare and economic hardship, b) Hypothesis 2: Public policy, like welfare, is influenced by public opinion, and vice versa, c) Hypothesis 3: Economic events and respondent variables influence welfare policy and public opinions. Overall, I found that economic events do slightly influence public opinion towards welfare spending. For example, support for welfare spending slightly increased during the Great Recession. Furthermore, a spike in welfare opposition was recorded in 1994. This may be explained by the political discourse of welfare policy at that time because soon after the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 was passed. This would suggest that public policy change is influenced by public opinion. Finally, respondent variables of age, race, education level, and political party affiliation influence welfare attitudes

    Blind and visually impaired students need appropriate methods and accessible technology in order to compete and advance in learning the science concepts. The study investigated the attitudes, perceptions, and knowledge of assistive technology used by science teachers of the visually impaired from a Mid-Atlantic state and how they are incorporated in the classroom. The participant response gives notice to what forms of assistive technology are used in frequency, and the training and comfort level to use the assistive technology. The open responses stated themes of teachers needing more training in visual impairment college programs to use assistive technology to increase proficiency and use in the classroom with blind students

    A near-field scanned microwave probe for spatially localized electrical metrology

    We have developed a near-field scanned microwave probe with a sampling volume of approximately 10 micron in diameter, which is the smallest one achieved in near-field microwave microscopy. This volume is defined to confine close to 100 percent of the probe net sampling reactive energy, thus making the response virtually independent on the sample properties outside of this region. The probe is formed by a 4 GHz balanced stripline resonator with a few-micron tip size. It provides non-contact, non-invasive measurement and is uniquely suited for spatially localized electrical metrology applications, e.g. on semiconductor production wafers.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Appl.     Phorbol 12,13-Dibutyrate-Induced, Protein Kinase C-Mediated Contraction of Rabbit Bladder Smooth Muscle

    Contraction of bladder smooth muscle is predominantly initiated by M3 muscarinic receptor-mediated activation of the Gq/11-phospholipase C β-protein kinase C (PKC) and the G12/13-RhoGEF-Rho kinase (ROCK) pathways. However, these pathways and their downstream effectors are not well understood in bladder smooth muscle. We used phorbol 12,13-dibutyrate (PDBu), and 1,2-dioctanoyl-sn-glycerol (DOG), activators of PKC, in this investigation. We were interested in dissecting the role(s) of PKC and to clarify the signaling pathways in bladder smooth muscle contraction, especially the potential cross-talk with ROCK and their downstream effectors in regulating myosin light chain phosphatase activity and force. To achieve this goal, the study was performed in the presence or absence of the PKC inhibitor bisindolylmaleimide-1 (Bis) or the ROCK inhibitor H-1152. Phosphorylation levels of Thr38-CPI-17 and Thr696/Thr850 myosin phosphatase target subunit (MYPT1) were measured during PDBu or DOG stimulation using site specific antibodies. PDBu-induced contraction in bladder smooth muscle involved both activation of PKC and PKC-dependent activation of ROCK. CPI-17 as a major downstream effector, is phosphorylated by PKC and ROCK during PDBu and DOG stimulation. Our results suggest that Thr696 and Thr850-MYPT1 phosphorylation are not involved in the regulation of a PDBu-induced contraction. The results also demonstrate that bladder smooth muscle contains a constitutively active isoform of ROCK that may play an important role in the regulation of bladder smooth muscle basal tone.     Interleukin-6 inhibition for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis: A review of tocilizumab therapy

    The dawn of the biologic era has been an exciting period for clinical research and patient care in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Targeted biologic therapies have changed the outcome of this disease and made remission a realistic outcome for many patients. Tocilizumab (TCZ, Actemra®), is a humanized monoclonal antibody against the interleukin 6 receptor and has been approved in many countries for the treatment of moderate to severe RA. There have been a number of important clinical trials demonstrating the efficacy of TCZ in active rheumatoid arthritis. This review summarizes the data on efficacy, patient-reported outcomes, adverse events, and safety from some of these trials. Current trends in clinical practice will be discussed. It is difficult to place TCZ and many new medications in the algorithm of treatment at present. However, the next few years will hopefully reveal their role as we better define abnormal immune processes in individuals with RA
