    Dynamic pinning at a Py/Co interface measured using inductive magnetometry

    Broadband FMR responses for metallic single-layer and bi-layer magnetic films with total thicknesses smaller than the microwave magnetic skin depth have been studied. Two different types of microwave transducers were used to excite and detect magnetization precession: a narrow coplanar waveguide and a wide microstrip line. Both transducers show efficient excitation of higher-order standing spin wave modes. The ratio of amplitudes of the first standing spin wave to the fundamental resonant mode is independent of frequency for single films. In contrast, we find a strong variation of the amplitudes with frequency for bi-layers and the ratio is strongly dependent on the ordering of layers with respect to a stripline transducer. Most importantly, cavity FMR measurements on the same samples show considerably weaker amplitudes for the standing spin waves. All experimental data are consistent with expected effects due to screening by eddy currents in films with thicknesses below the microwave magnetic skin depth. Finally, conditions for observing eddy current effects in different types of experiments are critically examined

    Exchange anisotropy pinning of a standing spin wave mode

    Standing spin waves in a thin film are used as sensitive probes of interface pinning induced by an antiferromagnet through exchange anisotropy. Using coplanar waveguide ferromagnetic resonance, pinning of the lowest energy spin wave thickness mode in Ni(80)Fe(20)/Ir(25)Mn(75) exchange biased bilayers was studied for a range of IrMn thicknesses. We show that pinning of the standing mode can be used to amplify, relative to the fundamental resonance, frequency shifts associated with exchange bias. The shifts provide a unique `fingerprint' of the exchange bias and can be interpreted in terms of an effective ferromagnetic film thickness and ferromagnet/antiferromagnet interface anisotropy. Thermal effects are studied for ultra-thin antiferromagnetic Ir(25)Mn(75) thicknesses, and the onset of bias is correlated with changes in the pinning fields. The pinning strength magnitude is found to grow with cooling of the sample, while the effective ferromagnetic film thickness simultaneously decreases. These results suggest that exchange bias involves some deformation of magnetic order in the interface region.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    Magnetization pinning in conducting films demonstrated using broadband ferromagnetic resonance

    The broadband microstrip ferromagnetic resonance technique has been applied for detection and characterization of a magnetic inhomogeneity in a film sample. In the case of a 100nm thick Permalloy film an additional magnetically depleted top sub-layer, practically unidentifiable by the conventional ferromagnetic resonance setup, has been detected and characterized. These results have been confirmed by Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy revealing the fact that the optical properties of the additional sub-layer do not differ much from those of the bulk of the film. Subsequent characterization of a large number of other presumably single-layer films with thicknesses in the range 30-100nm using the same ferromagnetic resonance technique also revealed the same effect

    In Vitro Photodynamic Therapy with Chlorin e6 Leads to Apoptosis of Human Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells

    Percutaneous coronary intervention has become the most common and widely implemented method of heart revascularization. However, the development of restenosis remains the major limitation of this method. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) recently emerged as a new and promising method for the prevention of arterial restenosis. Here the efficacy of chlorin e6 in PDT was investigated in vitro using human vascular smooth muscle cells (TG/HA-VSMCs) as one of the cell types crucial in the development of restenosis. PDT-induced cell death was studied on many levels, including annexin V staining, measurement of the generation reactive oxygen species (ROS) and caspase-3 activity, and assessment of changes in mitochondrial membrane potential and fragmentation of DNA. Photosensitization of TG/HA-VSMCs with a 170 μM of chlorin e6 and subsequent illumination with the light of a 672-nm diode laser (2 J/cm2) resulted in the generation of ROS, a decrease in cell membrane polarization, caspase-3 activation, as well as DNA fragmentation. Interestingly, the latter two apoptotic events could not be observed in photosensitized and illuminated NIH3T3 fibroblasts, suggesting different outcomes of the model of PDT in various types of cells. The results obtained with human VSMCs show that chlorin e6 may be useful in the PDT of aerial restenosis, but its efficacy still needs to be established in an animal model

    Photodynamic Antimicrobial Chemotherapy in Aquaculture: Photoinactivation Studies of Vibrio fischeri

    BACKGROUND: Photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) combines light, a light-absorbing molecule that initiates a photochemical or photophysical reaction, and oxygen. The combined action of these three components originates reactive oxygen species that lead to microorganisms' destruction. The aim was to evaluate the efficiency of PACT on Vibrio fischeri: 1) with buffer solution, varying temperature, pH, salinity and oxygen concentration values; 2) with aquaculture water, to reproduce photoinactivation (PI) conditions in situ. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To monitor the PI kinetics, the bioluminescence of V. fischeri was measured during the experiments. A tricationic meso-substituted porphyrin (Tri-Py(+)-Me-PF) was used as photosensitizer (5 µM in the studies with buffer solution and 10-50 µM in the studies with aquaculture water); artificial white light (4 mW cm(-2)) and solar irradiation (40 mW cm(-2)) were used as light sources; and the bacterial concentration used for all experiments was ≈10(7) CFU mL(-1) (corresponding to a bioluminescence level of 10(5) relative light units--RLU). The variations in pH (6.5-8.5), temperature (10-25°C), salinity (20-40 g L(-1)) and oxygen concentration did not significantly affect the PI of V. fischeri, once in all tested conditions the bioluminescent signal decreased to the detection limit of the method (≈7 log reduction). The assays using aquaculture water showed that the efficiency of the process is affected by the suspended matter. Total PI of V. fischeri in aquaculture water was achieved under solar light in the presence of 20 µM of Tri-Py(+)-Me-PF. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: If PACT is to be used in environmental applications, the matrix containing target microbial communities should be previously characterized in order to establish an efficient protocol having into account the photosensitizer concentration, the light source and the total light dose delivered. The possibility of using solar light in PACT to treat aquaculture water makes this technology cost-effective and attractive

    At close distance Family practices of Italian young adults during the pandemic

    According to David Morgan (1996), the family is never simply a manifestation of ascribed roles, social functions, or formal prescriptions: family is a «doing». Taking this assumption as a starting point, this article explores the ways of doing family of young adults living in Italy, before and during the Covid-19 pandemic, focusing on their relationships with parents and friends. The analysis is based on interviews conducted during the lockdown and the weeks that followed it (March-June 2020) with forty young women and men aged between 23 and 29, with medium to low levels of education. This sample is part of an ongoing qualitative-quantitative longitudinal study on life courses in Italy (ITA.LI Italian Lives: Longitudinal Study on Life Courses in Italy). The analysis shows how the interviewees renegotiate their affective connections, rework their practices of constructing the family and feeling at home. On the one hand, negotiations within the family of origin turned these young adults into active agents who transform their households; on the other, friends are often included in a familial semantic classification, which is pivotal to the reorganization of identity and everyday life during the pandemic
