    On the Coulomb-Sturmian matrix elements of the Coulomb Green's operator

    The two-body Coulomb Hamiltonian, when calculated in Coulomb-Sturmian basis, has an infinite symmetric tridiagonal form, also known as Jacobi matrix form. This Jacobi matrix structure involves a continued fraction representation for the inverse of the Green's matrix. The continued fraction can be transformed to a ratio of two 2F1_{2}F_{1} hypergeometric functions. From this result we find an exact analytic formula for the matrix elements of the Green's operator of the Coulomb Hamiltonian.Comment: 8 page

    The two-level atom laser: analytical results and the laser transition

    The problem of the two-level atom laser is studied analytically. The steady-state solution is expressed as a continued fraction, and allows for accurate approximation by rational functions. Moreover, we show that the abrupt change observed in the pump dependence of the steady-state population is directly connected with the transition to the lasing regime. The condition for a sharp transition to Poissonian statistics is expressed as a scaling limit of vanishing cavity loss and light-matter coupling, κ0\kappa \to 0, g0g \to 0, such that g2/κg^2/\kappa stays finite and g2/κ>2γg^2/\kappa > 2 \gamma, where γ\gamma is the rate of atomic losses. The same scaling procedure is also shown to describe a similar change to Poisson distribution in the Scully-Lamb laser model too, suggesting that the low-κ\kappa, low-gg asymptotics is of a more general significance for the laser transition.Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures.     An integrated 4249 marker FISH/RH map of the canine genome

    BACKGROUND: The 156 breeds of dog recognized by the American Kennel Club offer a unique opportunity to map genes important in genetic variation. Each breed features a defining constellation of morphological and behavioral traits, often generated by deliberate crossing of closely related individuals, leading to a high rate of genetic disease in many breeds. Understanding the genetic basis of both phenotypic variation and disease susceptibility in the dog provides new ways in which to dissect the genetics of human health and biology. RESULTS: To facilitate both genetic mapping and cloning efforts, we have constructed an integrated canine genome map that is both dense and accurate. The resulting resource encompasses 4249 markers, and was constructed using the RHDF5000-2 whole genome radiation hybrid panel. The radiation hybrid (RH) map features a density of one marker every 900 Kb and contains 1760 bacterial artificial chromosome clones (BACs) localized to 1423 unique positions, 851 of which have also been mapped by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The two data sets show excellent concordance. Excluding the Y chromosome, the map features an RH/FISH mapped BAC every 3.5 Mb and an RH mapped BAC-end, on average, every 2 Mb. For 2233 markers, the orthologous human genes have been established, allowing the identification of 79 conserved segments (CS) between the dog and human genomes, dramatically extending the length of most previously described CS. CONCLUSIONS: These results provide a necessary resource for the canine genome mapping community to undertake positional cloning experiments and provide new insights into the comparative canine-human genome maps

    The value of community based performing arts organisations for young people

    This study funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council took place in six community-based organisations in four contrasting localities in different geographical areas. A total of 258 interviews were conducted with168 young people aged between 16 and 25 years old who were participating in a range of different art forms including drama, music production, dance and slam poetry. Of these young people, 96 were young men and 72 young women, 50% were White British, 25% Black African, Black British and Black Caribbean, 14% Dual Heritage, and other young people were Asian, South American, and Middle Eastern. Participation in the research was voluntary and all young people received vouchers. Tutors, managers and policy makers in the local areas and some national organisations were interviewed to gain a better understanding of the activities provided and how policies were working in practice

    Antibiotic therapy of neuroborreliosis:A survey among infectious disease specialists and neurologists in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark

    Introduction: Neuroborreliosis (NB) is a prevalent tick-borne neuroinfection in Europe. To delineate current practice in antimicrobial management of adults with NB and to prioritize future trials needed to optimize treatment recommendations, a questionnaire-based survey was performed. Methods: A self-administered Internet-based survey of NB treatment practices among specialists in infectious diseases and neurology based in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark was carried out between October 2021 and February 2022. The participants were also asked to prioritize four pre-defined research questions for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on therapy for NB. Results: In total, 290 physicians (45% female) from Norway (30%), Sweden (40%), and Denmark (30%) participated in the survey. Of the responders, 230 (79%) were infectious disease specialists and 56 (19%) were neurologists. The preferred antibiotic treatment for patients with early NB was oral doxycycline (n = 225, 78%). Intravenous (IV) penicillin, ceftriaxone, or cefotaxime for the full treatment course was favored by 12%. A preferred treat- ment duration of 10–14 days for patients with NB was reported by 245 respondents (85%), most common among participants from Sweden (97%). A total of 170 (59%) responders reported having local hospital guidelines on the treatment of NB, most often with recommendation of oral doxycycline (92%) for 10–14 days (90%) as first line treatment. The prioritization score for future RCTs was highest for adjunctive prednisone therapy in NB patients with facial palsy (median 5; IQR 4–6) and for placebo versus repeated antibiotics in patients with persistent symptoms after completed antibiotic therapy for NB (median 5, IQR 3–6). Conclusion: In Sweden, all respondents preferred treating NB with oral doxycycline for 10–14 days, whereas 5% in Norway and 19% in Denmark still treat NB with IV antibiotics for the entire treatment course. RCTs to define the role of adjunctive prednisolone in NB patients with facial palsy and repeated antibiotics in patients with persistent symptoms are prioritized for future research.publishedVersio

    Exact and quasiexact solvability of second-order superintegrable quantum systems: I. Euclidean space preliminaries

    We show that second-order superintegrable systems in two-dimensional and three-dimensional Euclidean space generate both exactly solvable (ES) and quasiexactly solvable (QES) problems in quantum mechanics via separation of variables, and demonstrate the increased insight into the structure of such problems provided by superintegrability. A principal advantage of our analysis using nondegenerate superintegrable systems is that they are multiseparable. Most past separation of variables treatments of QES problems via partial differential equations have only incorporated separability, not multiseparability. Also, we propose another definition of ES and QES. The quantum mechanical problem is called ES if the solution of Schrödinger equation can be expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions mFn and is QES if the Schrödinger equation admits polynomial solutions with coefficients necessarily satisfying a three-term or higher order of recurrence relations. In three dimensions we give an example of a system that is QES in one set of separable coordinates, but is not ES in any other separable coordinates. This example encompasses Ushveridze's tenth-order polynomial QES problem in one set of separable coordinates and also leads to a fourth-order polynomial QES problem in another separable coordinate set
