Regional Multinationals and the Korean Comestics Industry
This paper analyzes the market penetration and expansion strategy of cosmetics and toiletries multinational enterprises (MNEs) in South Korea from the perspective of regional strategy as developed recently by Rugman. We find that MNEs have different market entry and expansion strategies in the home region and in the foreign region. Home region MNEs (Japanese MNEs in this case), in general, utilize their firm-specific advantages (FSAs) better than foreign region MNEs (European and MNEs from the Americas in this case). Due to differences in transaction costs, home region MNEs exploit downstream FSAs while foreign region MNEs develop upstream FSAs. Market similarity also leads to a greater incentive to operate in the home region rather than in foreign regions. The home region effect significantly increases the likelihood of entry into foreign markets as the host countryâs âdiamondâ significantly affects the market entry strategies of MNEs.regional strategy, market penetration, cosmetics industry, double diamond, South Korea
The Regional Sales of Multinationals in the World Cosmetics Industry
This paper analyzes the regional characteristics and strategies of multinational enterprises (MNEs) in the world cosmetics and toiletries industry, based on the new work by Rugman on regional strategy. We test the proposition that MNEs may asymmetrically develop their upstream and downstream firm specific advantages (FSAs). We find that the upstream activities of the MNEs in cosmetics are home region based but that downstream activities are less so. Further, the asymmetry of FSAs in the world cosmetics industry is mainly due to the atypical Asian entry strategies of North American and West European cosmetics MNEs. Object-oriented construction of a multigrid electronic-structure code with Fortran 90
We describe the object-oriented implementation of a higher-order
finite-difference density-functional code in Fortran 90. Object-oriented models
of grid and related objects are constructed and employed for the implementation
of an efficient one-way multigrid method we have recently proposed for the
density-functional electronic-structure calculations. Detailed analysis of

Correlation function of dyonic strings
We investigate the two- and three-point correlation functions of the dyonic
magnon and spike, which correspond to the solitonic string moving in the
Poincare AdS and three-dimensional sphere. We show that the coupling between
two dyonic magnons or spikes together with a marginal scalar operator in the
string theory is exactly the same as one obtained by the RG analysis in the

Planting and harvesting innovation - an analysis of Samsung Electronics
This study explores how firms manage the entire life cycle of innovation projects based on the framework of harvesting and planting innovation. While harvesting innovation seeks new products in the expectation of financial performance in the short term, planting innovation pursues creating value over a long time period. Without proper management of the process of planting and harvesting innovation, firms with limited resources may not be successful in launching innovative new products to seize a momentum in high tech industries. To examine this issue, the case of Samsung Electronics (SE), now an electronics giant originated from a former developing country, is analyzed. SE has shown to effectively utilize co-innovation to maintain numerous planting and harvesting innovation projects. Both researchers and practitioners would be interested in learning about how SE shared risks of innovation investment with external partners at the early stage of innovation cycles

Electron-hole asymmetry in Co- and Mn-doped SrFe2As2
Phase diagram of electron and hole-doped SrFe2As2 single crystals is
investigated using Co and Mn substitution at the Fe-sites. We found that the
spin-density-wave state is suppressed by both dopants, but the superconducting
phase appears only for Co (electron)-doping, not for Mn (hole)-doping. Absence
of the superconductivity by Mn-doping is in sharp contrast to the hole-doped
system with K-substitution at the Sr sites. Distinct structural change, in
particular the increase of the Fe-As distance by Mn-doping is important to have
a magnetic and semiconducting ground state as confirmed by first principles
calculations. The absence of electron-hole symmetry in the Fe-site-doped
SrFe2As2 suggests that the occurrence of high-Tc superconductivity is sensitive
to the structural modification rather than the charge doping.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Theory of magnetic field-induced metaelectric critical end point in BiMnO
A recent experiment on the multiferroic BiMnO compound under a strong
applied magnetic field revealed a rich phase diagram driven by the coupling of
magnetic and charge (dipolar) degrees of freedom. Based on the
exchange-striction mechanism, we propose here a theoretical model with the
intent to capture the interplay of the spin and dipolar moments in the presence
of a magnetic field in BiMnO. Experimentally observed behavior of the
dielectric constants, magnetic susceptibility, and the polarization is, for the
most part, reproduced by our model. The critical behavior observed near the
polarization reversal point in the phase diagram is interpreted as

BANDWIDTH SELECTION FOR SPATIAL HAC AND OTHER ROBUST COVARIANCE ESTIMATORS
This research note documents estimation procedures and results for an empirical investigation of the performance of the recently developed spatial, heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation consistent (HAC) covariance estimator calibrated with different kernel bandwidths. The empirical example is concerned with a hedonic price model for residential property values. The first bandwidth approach varies an a priori determined plug-in bandwidth criterion. The second method is a data driven cross-validation approach to determine the optimal neighborhood. The third approach uses a robust semivariogram to determine the range over which residuals are spatially correlated. Inference becomes more conservative as the plug-in bandwidth is increased. The data-driven approaches prove valuable because they are capable of identifying the optimal spatial range, which can subsequently be used to inform the choice of an appropriate bandwidth value. In our empirical example, pertaining to a standard spatial model and ditto dataset, the results of the data driven procedures can only be reconciled with relatively high plug-in values (n0.65 or n0.75). The results for the semivariogram and the cross-validation approaches are very similar which, given its computational simplicity, gives the semivariogram approach an edge over the more flexible cross-validation approach.spatial HAC, semivariogram, bandwidth, hedonic model
