Perception of Stigma among Attendees of Tertiary Care Psychiatric Clinic in Oman
Objectives: To examine the level of perceived stigma experienced by people with mental illnesses and its
relation to patient's age, gender, marital status, employment status, psychiatric diagnosis, and education level.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted among patients attending Psychiatric Clinic at Sultan
Qaboos University Hospital. Perceived stigma was assessed using the modified version of the 42 patients’ stigma
scale. Data were analyzed using statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) version 19.
Results: A total of 197 patients participated in the study (49% males and 52% females). Disclosure and
discrimination of mental illness subscales were highest factor of self- or perceived stigma compared to the positive
aspects. The impact of demographic factors and psychiatric diagnosis on the perception of stigma was not statistically
significant.
Conclusion: This study showed that attendees of the Psychiatry Clinic at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital
were less likely to disclose their mental illness and experienced more discrimination of mental illness than the
positive aspects
Hydromagnetic Boundary Layer Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics of a Nanofluid over an Inclined Stretching Surface in the Presence of a Convective Surface: A Comprehensive Study
In this paper we investigate numerically the hydromagnetic boundary layer flow and heat transfer characteristics of a nanofluid using three types of nanoparticles (copper, aluminium oxide and titanium dioxide) having various shapes (spherical, cylindrical, arbitrary, etc) by considering three kinds of base fluids (water, ethylene glycol and engine oil) over a nonlinear inclined stretching surface, taking into account the effect of convective surface condition. Using similarity transformations, the governing nonlinear partial differential equations of the physical model are transformed into non-dimensional ordinary differential equations which are solved for local similar solutions using the very robust computer algebra software, Maple 13. The numerical simulation is carried out to investigate the role of the pertinent parameters on the flow and temperature fields as well as on the rate of heat transfer and on the rate of shear stress. The results show that the addition of nanoparticles to the base fluid may not always increase the rate of heat transfer. It depends significantly on the surface convection, type of base fluid and nanoparticles. The finding of this study will open a gate for better understanding of nanofluid characteristics

Revisiting the Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder among Omani Children: A multicentre study
Objectives: This study aimed to provide an updated estimate of the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among Omani children. Methods: This retrospective descriptive study was conducted from December 2011 to December 2018. Data were retrieved from the three main autism diagnostic centres in Oman: Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Royal Hospital and Al-Massarah Hospital. The ASD diagnosis was made by experienced clinicians based on the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The overall population prevalence estimates per 10,000 children aged 0–14 years old in Oman were calculated using the denominator of the mid-period population data. Results: A total of 1,705 ASD cases were identified with the majority of cases being male (78.1%). The overall prevalence rate of ASD was estimated at 20.35 per 10,000 children (95% confidence interval: 19.39–21.32) between 2012–2018. Boys were found to have a 3.4-fold higher prevalence of ASD than girls (31.23/10,000 versus 9.07/10,000). Regionally, the majority of cases were found in the capital, Muscat, where the highest prevalence was 36.51 cases per 10,000 children. Conclusion: The prevalence of ASD among Omani children is 15-fold higher than estimates from 2011. This increase can be attributed to improvements in diagnostic services, increased awareness of ASD, better screening programmes and changes in diagnostic criteria. In addition, this increase in prevalence suggests a need for a registry of developmental disabilities and more extensive diagnostic and rehabilitation services in Oman. Keywords: Autism Spectrum Disorder; Epidemiology; Prevalence; Oman
