A first snapshot of sandy-beach amphipod (Crustacea) assemblage in a Marine Protected Area, Favignana Island (central Mediterranean Sea)

The aim of this study is to compile a preliminary first check-list of Amphipoda species from beaches of Favignana Island (Sicily, Italy), and contribute to the knowledge relating to the distribution of this taxon in the Mediterranean Sea. Five amphipod species, belonging to two families (Talitridae and Hyalidae), have been collect in the island. The supralittoral assemblage appears to contain three main biogeographical categories: Atlanto-Mediterranean species, Mediterranean endemic species and cosmopolitan species

In the antidote Gal\u113n\u113 by Andromachus the Elder (14.32.113-42.8 K) ) we nd (14.40.5) the noun \u1f00\u3b3\u3bb\u3b1\u1fd3\u3b7\u3bd, \uabbrightness\ubb, that causes some exegetical problems. Galen, however, commenting on the Gal\u113n\u113 in the rst book of his de antidotis, conms this term and re- commends that it should not be considered as an ingredient of the antidote. In a late ma- nuscript, the Parisinus gr. 2164, the term \u1f00\u3b3\u3bb\u3b1\u1fd3\u3b7\u3bd is corrected into the adjective \u3b1\u1f30\u3b3\u3bb\u1fc6\u3b5\u3bd, that could refer to the white pepper. Here I suggest that this conjecture should be consi- dered for a critical restitution of Andromachus\u2019 text, in spite of Galen\u2019s authorit

Differential leakage factor in electrical machines equipped with asymmetrical multiphase windings: A general investigation

This paper presents an investigation in terms of degree of unbalance and leakage factor of electrical machines equipped with multiphase windings. The analysis has been carried out through 4800 combinations between slots/poles/phases/layers, analyzing the variability of the leakage factor for each condition and determining the optimal region for its minimization. The obtained results demonstrate that the leakage factor could be considerably reduced with the adoption of slightly asymmetrical windings, which represent a favorable option during the early design stage of electrical machines

Reward, salience, and attentional networks are activated by religious experience in devout Mormons

High-level cognitive and emotional experience arises from brain activity, but the specific brain substrates for religious and spiritual euphoria remain unclear. We demonstrate using functional magnetic resonance imaging scans in 19 devout Mormons that a recognizable feeling central to their devotional practice was reproducibly associated with activation in nucleus accumbens, ventromedial prefrontal cortex, and frontal attentional regions. Nucleus accumbens activation preceded peak spiritual feelings by 1–3 s and was replicated in four separate tasks. Attentional activation in the anterior cingulate and frontal eye fields was greater in the right hemisphere. The association of abstract ideas and brain reward circuitry may interact with frontal attentional and emotive salience processing, suggesting a mechanism whereby doctrinal concepts may come to be intrinsically rewarding and motivate behavior in religious individuals
