    Photoproduction of vector mesons: from ultraperipheral to semi-central heavy ion collisions

    We discuss nuclear cross sections for AAAAVAA \to AAV and AAAAVVAA \to AAVV reactions with one or two vector mesons in the final state. Our analysis is done in the impact parameter space equivalent photon approximation. This approach allows to consider the above processes taking into account distance between colliding nuclei. We consider both ultraperipheral and semi-central collisions. We are a first group which undertook a study of single J/ψJ/\psi photoproduction for different centrality bins. We show that one can describe new ALICE experimental data by including geometrical effects of collisions in the flux factor. Next, total and differential cross section for double-scattering mechanism in the exclusive AAAAVVAA \to AAVV reaction in ultrarelativistic ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions is presented. In this context we consider double photoproduction and photon-photon processes. Simultaneously, we get very good agreement of our results with STAR (RHIC), CMS and ALICE (LHC) experimental data for single ρ0\rho^0 and J/ψJ/\psi vector meson production.     Exclusive DDˉD \bar D meson pair production in peripheral ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions

    The cross sections for exclusive D+DD^+D^- and D0D0ˉD^0 \bar {D^0} meson pair production in peripheral nucleus - nucleus collisions are calculated and several differential distributions are presented. The calculation of the elementary γγDDˉ\gamma \gamma \to D \bar D cross section is done within the heavy-quark approximation and in the Brodsky- Lapage formalism with distribution amplitudes describing recent CLEO data on leptonic D+D^+ decay. Realistic (Fourier transform of charge density) charge form factors of nuclei are used to generate photon flux factors. Absorption effects are discussed and quantified. The cross sections of a few nb are predicted for RHIC and of a few hundreds of nb for LHC with details depending on the approximation made in calculating elementary γγDDˉ\gamma \gamma \to D \bar D cross sections.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    Exclusive Four-pion Photoproduction in Ultra-peripheral Heavy-ion Collisions at RHIC and LHC Energies

    We study the photoproduction of exclusive 2π+2π− mesons in ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions at the RHIC and LHC energies. Predictions in photon–nucleus interactions are calculated for various resonances at central and forward rapidities. The recent H1 preliminary data are utilized to improve the description of the poorly known γp→4π±p process. We present the comparisons of our results to the available STAR data at RHIC, and made predictions for the LHC energies

    The γγππ\gamma\gamma\to\pi\pi reactions are discussed. To describe those processes, we include dipion continuum, resonances, high-energy pion-pion rescatterings, ρ\rho meson exchange and pQCD Brodsky-Lepage mechanisms. The cross section for the production of pion pairs in photon-photon collisions in peripheral heavy ion collisions is calculated with the help of Equivalent Photon Approximaption (EPA) in the impact parameter space. We show predictions at sNN=3.5\sqrt{s_{NN}}=3.5 TeV which could be measured e.g. by the ALICE collaboration at the LHC.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, talk by M.     Light-by-light scattering in ultraperipheral collisions of heavy ions with future FoCal and ALICE 3 detectors

    We discuss possible future studies of photon-photon (light-by-light) scattering using a planned FoCal and ALICE 3 detectors. We include different mechanisms of γγγγ\gamma\gamma\to\gamma\gamma scattering, such as double-hadronic photon fluctuations, t/ut/u-channel neutral pion exchange or resonance excitations (γγR\gamma \gamma \to R) and deexcitation (RγγR \to \gamma \gamma). The broad range of (pseudo)rapidities and lower cuts on transverse momenta open a necessity to consider not only dominant box contributions but also other subleading contributions. Here we include low mass resonant R=π0R = \pi^0, η\eta, η\eta' contributions. The resonance contributions give intermediate photon transverse momenta. However, these contributions can be eliminated by imposing windows on di-photon invariant mass. We study and quantify individual box contributions (leptonic, quarkish). The electron/positron boxes dominate at low Mγγ<1M_{\gamma \gamma}<1 GeV di-photon invariant masses. The PbPb\toPbPbγγ\gamma \gamma cross section is calculated within equivalent photon approximation in the impact parameter space. Several differential distributions are presented and discussed. We consider four different kinematic regions. We predict cross section in the (mb-b) range for typical ALICE 3 cuts, a few orders of magnitude larger than for the current ATLAS or CMS experiments. We also consider the two-π0\pi^0 background which can, in principle, be eliminated at the new kinematical range for the ALICE 3 measurements by imposing dedicated cuts on di-photon transverse momentum and\or so-called vector asymmetry.Comment: 20 pages, 19 Figures, 3 Tables; misprint corrected, 1 figure adde

    Exclusive production of large invariant mass pion pairs in ultraperipheral ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions

    The cross section for exclusive production of π+π\pi^+ \pi^- and π0π0\pi^0 \pi^0 meson pairs in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is calculated for LHC energy sNN=\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 3.5 TeV taking into account photon-photon mechanism. We concentrate on the production of large two-pion invariant masses where the mechanism of the elementary γγππ\gamma \gamma \to \pi \pi process is not fully understood. In order to include a size of nuclei we perform calculation in the impact-parameter equivalent photon approximation (EPA). Realistic charge densities are used to calculate charged form factor of 208^{208}Pb nucleus and to generate photon fluxes associated with ultrarelativistic heavy ions. Sizeable cross sections are obtained that can be measured at LHC. The cross section for elementary γγππ\gamma \gamma \to \pi \pi is calculated in the framework of pQCD Brodsky-Lepage (BL) mechanism with the distribution amplitude used to descibe recent data of the BABAR collaboration on pion transition form factor, using hand-bag mechanism advocated to describe recent Belle data as well as tt and uu-channel meson/reggeon exchanges. We present distributions in two-pion invariant mass as well as the pion pair rapidity for the nuclear process.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure

    Hybrid-procedures for the Treatment of Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysms and Dissections

    AimThe conventional open repair of thoracoabdominal aneurysms and dissections remains complex and demanding and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. We present our experience of hybrid open and endovascular treatment of thoracoabdominal aneurysms and dissections.MethodsWithin an experience of 226 aortic stent-grafts between 1998 and April 2006, 6 of the patients (median age 60 years, range 35 to 68 years) with thoracoabdominal aneurysms (Crawford type I, II, III, and V) were treated with a combined endovascular and open surgical approach. Five men and one woman, with median aneurysm diameter of 75mm (range 70–100mm), received revascularization of the renal arteries, the superior mesenteric artery, and the coeliac trunk accomplished via transperitoneal bypass grafting. Aneurysmal exclusion was then performed by stent-graft deployment.ResultsThe entire procedure was technically successful in all patients. The patients were discharged a median of 9 days after the operation, while the postoperative studies revealed the patency of the vessels and no evidence of type I endoleak or secondary rupture of the aneurysm. During follow up (1 to 22 months) spiral-CT scanning revealed distinct shrinkage of the aneurysm, no graft migration or endoleak and patency of all revascularised vessels, except one renal artery in two patients. No patient experienced any temporary or permanent neurological deficit, and no dialysis was necessary.ConclusionThe combined endovascular and open surgical approach is feasible, without cross clamping of the aorta and with minimized ischemia time for renal and visceral arteries, and seems to be an appropriate strategy for patients with a thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm or dissection

    The γγJ/ψJ/ψ\gamma \gamma \to J/\psi J/\psi reaction and the J/ψJ/ψJ/\psi J/\psi pair production in exclusive ultraperipheral ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions

    We calculate the cross section for the γγJ/ψJ/ψ\gamma \gamma \to J/\psi J/\psi process. Two mechanisms are considered: box (two-loop) diagrams of the order of O(αem2αs2)O(\alpha_{em}^2 \alpha_s^2) and two-gluon exchange of the order of O(αem2αs4)O(\alpha_{em}^2 \alpha_s^4). The first mechanism is calculated in the heavy-quark non-relativistic approximation while the second case we also include the effects of quantum motion of quarks in the bound state. The box contribution dominates at energies close to the threshold (W<W < 15 GeV) while the two-gluon mechanism takes over at W>W > 15 GeV. Including the bound-state wave function effects for the two-gluon exchange mechanism gives a cross section 0.1 - 0.4 pb, substantially smaller than that in the non-relativistic limit (0.4 - 1.6 pb). We also find a strong infrared sensitivity which manifests itself in a rather strong dependence on the mass for the tt-channel gluons. The elementary cross section is then used in the Equivalent Photon Approximation (EPA) in the impact parameter space to calculate the cross section for 208Pb+208Pb208Pb+J/ψJ/ψ+208Pb^{208}Pb+^{208}Pb \to ^{208}Pb + J/\psi J/\psi + ^{208}Pb reaction. Distributions in rapidity of the J/ψJ/ψJ/\psi J/\psi pair and invariant mass of the pair are shown.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figure

    Endotension is Influenced by Wall Compliance in a Latex Aneurysm Model

    AbstractObjectives. Even though endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) creates a closed chamber except for patent branches, the intra-sac pressure is never zero. This study was designed to investigate whether, and to what extent, aneurysm wall compliance influences intra-sac pressure.Design. In vitro experimental study.Methods. Aneurysm models with six and 12 latex layers were produced, resulting in elastic and stiff circumferential compliance (3.5±0.5 and 0.9±0.3%/100 mmHg, respectively). The models with an 18 mm internal neck and maximum aneurysm diameter of 60 mm were inserted into an in vitro circulation system. The systemic mean pressure (SPmean) was varied from 50 to 120 mmHg. After the aneurysm was excluded with a knitted polyethylene graft, aneurysm sac mean pressure (ASPmean) and aneurysm sac pulse pressure (ASPpulse) were measured. Data are presented as mean±SD. Statistics were performed using repeated measurements of variance; p<0.05 was considered significant.Results. In the model EVAR created a closed chamber without endoleak, but with an aneurysm sac pressure related to wall compliance. In the elastic aneurysm model with six latex coats the aneurysm sac mean pressure (ASPmean) and the aneurysm sac pulse pressure (ASPpulse) at all systemic pressures were significantly lower than they were in the stiffer model with 12 latex coats (p<0.05). At a SPmean of 90 mmHg, the ASPmean was 21.0±0.9 mmHg (six latex coats) and 26.0±0.2 mmHg (12 latex coats) (p<0.05), the ASPpulse was 5.7±0.2 mmHg (six latex coats) and 8.8±0.3 mmHg (12 latex coats) (p<0.05).Conclusions. This in vitro model demonstrated that the aneurysm sac mean pressure (ASPmean) and the aneurysm sac pulse pressure (ASPpulse) were significantly influenced by the compliance of the aneurysm wall. These data highlight the need for further studies regarding endotension
