    Metal-insulator-metal (MIM) nanocapacitors and effects of material properties on their operation

    Metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitors play an important part in many integrated electronic circuits in the areas of analog, microwave, and radio frequency systems. However the transverse dimensions of current MIM capacitors are in the micrometer scale. If integrated circuits continue to be miniaturized, the capacitor, alongside other components, must also be miniaturized to realize nanoelectronic circuits and systems. This article presents a novel device, the nanocapacitor, of which the dimensions are constrained to nanoscale in longitudinal and transverse directions, and discusses the effects of material properties on their operation. In particular, this work discusses the effects of dielectric constant, dielectric strength, and quantum electrical phenomena on achieving relatively high capacitances and capacitance densities in nanocapacitors. © Institute of Materials Engineering Australasia Ltd - Materials Forum Volume 27 - Published 2004

    State Based Determinants of Inward FDI Flow in the US Economy

    Inward foreign direct investment (FDI) represents an integral part of the US economy. The flow of international capital has been a key factor expanding economy. The inward US FDI constitutes important factor contributing to output growth in the US economy. This paper investigates factors affecting the inward FDI flow among fifty states of the United States. The analysis uses annual data for the period from 1997 to 2007. The study identifies several state-specific determinants of FDI and investigates the changes in their importance during the study period. Our results show that among the major determinants, the real per capita income, real per capita expenditure on education, FDI related employment, research and development expenditure, and capital expenditure are found to have a significant positive impact on FDI inflows. There is also evidence that the share of scientists and engineers in the workforce exerts a small positive impact on inward FDI flow. In addition, per capita state taxes, unit labor cost, manufacturing density, unionization, and unemployment rate exert a negative impact on FDI inflows

    Incorporating appliance usage patterns for non-intrusive load monitoring and load forecasting

    This paper proposes a novel Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) method which incorporates appliance usage patterns (AUPs) to improve performance of active load identi- fication and forecasting. In the first stage, the AUPs of a given residence were learnt using a spectral decomposition based standard NILM algorithm. Then, learnt AUPs were utilized to bias the priori probabilities of the appliances through a specifically constructed fuzzy system. The AUPs contain likelihood measures for each appliance to be active at the present instant based on the recent activity/inactivity of appliances and the time of day. Hence, the priori probabilities determined through the AUPs increase the active load identification accuracy of the NILM algorithm. The proposed method was successfully tested for two standard databases containing real household measurements in USA and Germany. The proposed method demonstrates an improvement in active load estimation when applied to the aforementioned databases as the proposed method augments the smart meter readings with the behavioral trends obtained from AUPs. Furthermore, a residential power consumption forecasting mechanism, which can predict the total active power demand of an aggregated set of houses, five minutes ahead of real time, was successfully formulated and implemented utilizing the proposed AUP based technique

    Multielectron Redox Chemistry of Transition Metal Complexes Supported by a Non‐Innocent N3P2 Ligand: Synthesis, Characterization, and Catalytic Properties

    A new redox‐active, diarylamido‐based ligand (LN3P2) capable of Îș5‐N,N,N,P,P chelation has been used to prepare a series of complexes with the general formula [MII(LN3P2)]X, where M = Fe (1; X = OTf), Co (2; X = ClO4), or Ni (3; X = ClO4). The diarylamido core of monoanionic LN3P2 is derived from bis(2‐amino‐4‐methylphenyl)amine, which undergoes condensation with two equivalents of 2‐(diphenylphosphanyl)benzaldehyde to provide chelating arms with both arylphosphine and imine donors. X‐ray structural, magnetic, and spectroscopic studies indicate that the N3P2 coordination environment generally promotes low‐spin configurations. Three quasi‐reversible redox couples between +1.0 and –1.5 V (vs. Fc+/Fc) were observed in voltammetric studies of each complex, corresponding to MII/MIII oxidation, LN3P2‐based oxidation, and MII/MI reduction (in order of highest to lowest potential). Spectroscopic and computational analyses of 3ox – generated via chemical one‐electron oxidation of 3 – revealed that a stable diarylaminyl radical (LN3P2·) is formed upon oxidation. The ability of the CoII complex (2) to function as an electrocatalyst for H2 generation was evaluated in the presence of weak acids. Moderate activity was observed using 4‐tert‐butylphenol as the proton source at potentials below –2.0 V. The insights gained here will assist in the future design of pentadentate mixed N/P‐based chelates for catalytic processes

    How Does Foreign Direct Investment Affect Growth in Developing Countries? An Empirical Investigation

    This paper analyzes the effects of foreign direct investment on the economic growth of developing countries. The study uses annual data on a group of 85 developing countries covering Asia, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean for the period 1980-2007. We explore the hypothesis that foreign direct investment can promote growth in developing countries. We test this hypothesis using panel data series for foreign direct investment, while accounting for regional differences in Asian, African, Latin American, and the Caribbean countries as well as the differences in income levels. While the findings of previous studies are generally mixed, our results indicate that foreign direct investment has positive and significant effect on economic growth

    This paper aims to measure the level of intra-industry trade with special focus on vertical and horizontal intra-industry trade (IIT) in United State\u27s foreign trade with Caribbean countries. One of the main findings is that the observed increase in intra-industry trade between the United States and Caribbean is almost entirely due to two-way trade in vertical differentiation. The second important finding is that the level of per capita income, trade intensity, product differentiation, industry size, and product quality differences are found to affect the shares of all three types of IIT positively

    An Analysis of the Intra-Regional Trade in the Middle East and North Africa Region

    This paper analyzes the intra-regional trade and investment flows in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region using an augmented gravity model applied to panel data. The study uses annual trade and investment data for the period 1980-2006. There is a growing awareness among countries in the MENA region regarding the importance of international trade and foreign direct investment for stimulating growth and integrating into the world economy. The research will attempt to achieve the following objectives: (a) analyze the intra-regional trade and investment flows in the MENA region; (b) identify the major determinants of trade and investment flows in the MENA region using an augmented gravity model applied to panel data; and (c) measure the effect of preferential trading arrangements in the region on members’ trade and investment with other MENA countries
