    In Sri Lanka waters, Durairatnam (1963, 1969) had reported on the seasonal variation of plankton at Puttalam lagoon, Dutch Bay, Portugal Bay and in the inshore and off shore waters off Colombo. Similar investigations were carried out at Koddiyar Bay especially in the estuarine waters where the three tributaries of the river Mahaveli empty their waters into the bay. The estuary is perennial. The fishes constituting the estuarine fisheries are mostly shallow water marine species which can tolerate considerable variations of salinities. Prawns and crabs also constitute a very valuable fishery in estuarine waters

    The monthly average temperatures at Puttalam Lagoon, Dutch Bay, Portugal Bay towards Kovilmunai and Portugal Bay towards Pallugaturai showed a distinct annual cycle. The peak was in April and values gradually fell till September. There was a further gradual fall in temperature from October to January. The highest temperatures in all four stations were in April. The highest salinities in all the stations were from May to October i.e., during the south-west monsoon. The salinities at Dutch Bay and Portugal Bay were high in March and April corresponding to the highest temperatures reached during these months. Two maxima have been observed in phytoplankton production. A primary maximum in May-June and a secondary maximum in October. The primary and secondary maxima are due to the influx of nutrient laden waters from the rivers Kal Aru and Pomparippu Aru. The phytoplankton producing blooms were Rhizosolenia alata. Rhizosolenia imbricata, Chaetoceros lascinosus, Chaetoceros pervianus, Ch,aetoceros diversus, Coscinodiscus gigas, Thallasionema nitzschioides, Thalassiosira subtilis, Thallassiothrix frauenfeldii, Asterionella japonica, Sceletonema costatum, Bacteriastrum varians and Biddulphia sinensis. Sudden outbursts of a single species were common. These diatoms were species of Chaetoceros and Rhizosolenia, and Thallassiothrix frauenfeldii. Wide fluctuations have been observed in the distribution of phytoplankton but no definite conclusions can be drawn as the period of observation was only one year

    The collection of blue green algae kept at the herbarium of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya, was collected by Ferguson more than 70 years ago. Since then many changes have taken place in the taxonomy of the blue green algae. West (1902), Lemmermann (1907), Wine (1915), Crow (1923), Bharadwaja (1934) and Holsinger (1935) had described some of the blue green algae of Ceylon. While examining the collections of blue green algae kept at the herbarium, the authors found that most of the identifications were incorrect and required revision. In the present paper 20 blue green algae are described. The classification and key to the species are based on the characters given by Desikachary (1959). Blue green algae are important to fisheries since Chanos larvae feed on them

    PEOPLE-RELATED TQM PRACTICES, INTRINSIC MOTIVATION AND QUALITY PERFORMANCE: EMPIRICAL STUDY IN SRI LANKAN APPAREL INDUSTRY

    Total Quality Management (TQM) has been implemented in diverse industries globally, anticipating performance improvements. Among the plethora of research supporting the success of TQM, there are controversial reports claiming failures of TQM. Employee work attitudes arising as the immediate outcomes of TQM have been reported and have been conceptualised as mediators. The search for factors influencing failures of TQM has not been conclusive and there are certain contexts in which the phenomenon has not been tested. Furthermore, there is a paucity of studies relating to employee work attitudes and their mediating effect in TQM domain. This paper aims to determine the relationships between people-related TQM, intrinsic motivation and quality performance and the mediating effect of intrinsic motivation in the Sri Lankan apparel industry. Analysis of the data obtained from a sample of 566 machine operator employees using Structural Equation Modelling revealed that people-related TQM practices did not influence intrinsic motivation or quality performance. Intrinsic motivation did not exert any mediating effect in the study context. Among the PTQM practices, team work, training and employee involvement were significant drivers of intrinsic motivation and quality performance while top management commitment and employee empowerment were not.  Article visualizations

    Checklist of marine benthic green algae (Chlorophyta) at the subtropical island of Hainan (China): A comparison between the 1930s and 1990-2009 reveals environmental changes

    A complete checklist of intertidal to shallow subtidal marine green seaweeds (Chlorophyta) growing on the subtropical island of Hainan (China) is presented here for the fi rst time. It covers data from extensive recent (1990 – 2009) and historical (1933 – 1935) collections, and additional published records from various time periods. Data were analyzed by time period. We postulate that environmental changes on Hainan Island documented since the 1980s (e.g., degradation of coral reefs, development of tourism and mariculture farms) are refl ected in the green algal species complement and in the dominance or absence of specifi c algal groups during different time periods. In total, 105 green algal taxa were recorded, including 37 new to Hainan Island, and 18 new records for China. There was a clearly evident change in fl oristic composition between early and recent collections. In the 1930s, there was a dominance of Caulerpaceae, Codiaceae and Cladophoraceae. By 1990/1992, the numbers of Ulvaceae had increased 1.6-fold and numbers of Cladophoraceae 1.7-fold. Both families contain many opportunistic species that prefer nutrient-enriched or degraded environments. At the same time, species richness of Codiaceae, Caulerpaceae and Udotaceae, families with complex thallus structures, decreased considerably.
