    Quantitative complementarity between local and nonlocal character of quantum states in a three-qubit system

    Local or nonlocal character of quantum states can be quantified and is subject to various bounds that can be formulated as complementarity relations. Here, we investigate the local vs. nonlocal character of pure three-qubit states by a four-way interferometer. The complete entanglement in the system can be measured as the entanglement of a specific qubit with the subsystem consisting of the other two qubits. The quantitative complementarity relations are verified experimentally in an NMR quantum information processor.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure

    Classification and stability of simple homoclinic cycles in R^5

    The paper presents a complete study of simple homoclinic cycles in R^5. We find all symmetry groups Gamma such that a Gamma-equivariant dynamical system in R^5 can possess a simple homoclinic cycle. We introduce a classification of simple homoclinic cycles in R^n based on the action of the system symmetry group. For systems in R^5, we list all classes of simple homoclinic cycles. For each class, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability and fragmentary asymptotic stability in terms of eigenvalues of linearisation near the steady state involved in the cycle. For any action of the groups Gamma which can give rise to a simple homoclinic cycle, we list classes to which the respective homoclinic cycles belong, thus determining conditions for asymptotic stability of these cycles.Comment: 34 pp., 4 tables, 30 references.     International audienceThe dynamics and deformations of immersed flexible fibers are at the heart of important industrial and biological processes, induce peculiar mechanical and transport properties in the fluids that contain them, and are the basis for novel methods of flow control. Here we focus on the low Reynolds number regime where advances in studying these fiber-fluid systems have been especially rapid. On the experimental side this is due to new methods of fiber synthesis, microfluidic flow control, and of microscope based tracking measurement techniques. Likewise, there have been continuous improvements in the specialized mathematical modeling and numerical methods needed to capture the interactions of slender flexible fibers with flows, boundaries, and each other

    Distilling Information Reliability and Source Trustworthiness from Digital Traces

    Online knowledge repositories typically rely on their users or dedicated editors to evaluate the reliability of their content. These evaluations can be viewed as noisy measurements of both information reliability and information source trustworthiness. Can we leverage these noisy evaluations, often biased, to distill a robust, unbiased and interpretable measure of both notions? In this paper, we argue that the temporal traces left by these noisy evaluations give cues on the reliability of the information and the trustworthiness of the sources. Then, we propose a temporal point process modeling framework that links these temporal traces to robust, unbiased and interpretable notions of information reliability and source trustworthiness. Furthermore, we develop an efficient convex optimization procedure to learn the parameters of the model from historical traces. Experiments on real-world data gathered from Wikipedia and Stack Overflow show that our modeling framework accurately predicts evaluation events, provides an interpretable measure of information reliability and source trustworthiness, and yields interesting insights about real-world events.Comment: Accepted at 26th World Wide Web conference (WWW-17

    Effect of training on knowledge about cervical cancer and Human Papiloma Virus vaccine among health care personnel in Benin City

    Background: Although the HPV vaccine is available for a fee in Nigeria it is not yet in the National Programme on Immunization (NPI) which is free. Health care workers can play an important role in improving uptake of the vaccine and in advocating for its inclusion in the NPI. However, this role may be limited by lack of knowledge. This study assessed the effect of training on health care workers’ knowledge of HPV, its relationship with cervical cancer and the role of HPV vaccine in prevention.Methods: This quasi-experimental study examined the responses to pre and post test evaluation of the knowledge and practice of health care workers from Benin City with regards to HPV, cervical cancer and HPV vaccines at a workshop organized to create awareness on the subject matter.Results: Of the 53 health care workers at the training, 46 (85%) knew that HPV was the causative agent of cervical cancer while only 13 (28.9%) and 15 (32.6%) knew that it was associated with oral and vaginal cancer, respectively. Majority of participants had heard about the HPV vaccine but only 15 (30.6%) had encouraged its use and 7 (14.3%) had prescribed it. Post test result showed marked improvement in most areas evaluated.Conclusion: The less than satisfactory knowledge of health care workers about HPV and its relationship with anogenital cancers was markedly improved by training. Training of health care workers should be done to address the dearth of knowledge prior to the deployment of the vaccine nationally.Keywords: Knowledge; Healthcare workers; HPV; HPV vaccine; Cervical cancer
