The role of the nature of the noise in the thermal conductance of mechanical systems
Focussing on a paradigmatic small system consisting of two coupled damped
oscillators, we survey the role of the L\'evy-It\^o nature of the noise in the
thermal conductance. For white noises, we prove that the L\'evy-It\^o
composition (Lebesgue measure) of the noise is irrelevant for the thermal
conductance of a non-equilibrium linearly coupled chain, which signals the
independence between mechanical and thermodynamical properties. On the other
hand, for the non-linearly coupled case, the two types of properties mix and
the explicit definition of the noise plays a central role.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures. To be published in Physical Review
Conserved mass models with stickiness and chipping
We study a chipping model in one dimensional periodic lattice with continuous
mass, where a fixed fraction of the mass is chipped off from a site and
distributed randomly among the departure site and its neighbours; the remaining
mass sticks to the site. In the asymmetric version, the chipped off mass is
distributed among the site and the right neighbour, whereas in the symmetric
version the redistribution occurs among the two neighbours. The steady state
mass distribution of the model is obtained using a perturbation method for both
parallel and random sequential updates. In most cases, this perturbation theory
provides a steady state distribution with reasonable accuracy.Comment: 17 pages, 4 eps figure
ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL INTERACTION OF 2001 CRISIS: IMPLICATIONS FOR 2008 RECESSION?
As it is known, Turkey experienced a severe economic crisis in the year 2001. This economic crisis has been costly for the Turkish economy and has typically been accompanied by a collapse of output and employment as well as striking declines in real wages. Not only economic insufficiencies and bottlenecks but also political uncertainty had sizeable impacts in the formation of economic crisis. The 2001 Crisis interestingly caused a set of catastrophe and it is worthy to analyze its emergence, mal-administration, and wide damage on the Turkish economy and to show the structure that transformed political climate in the post-crisis period. The interaction of political and economic dimensions of 2001 crisis also accompanies strong implications for 2008 recession and this paper finally discusses lessons of 2001 crisis for 2008 recession through the lenses of interplay between politics and economics
MOCVD growth and optical properties of non-polar (11-20) a-plane GaN on (10-12) r-plane sapphire substrate
Cataloged from PDF version of article.Non-polar a-plane GaN film with crystalline quality and anisotropy improvement is grown by use of high temperature AlN/AlGaN buffer, which is directly deposited on r-plane sapphire by pulse flows. Compared to the a-plane GaN grown on AIN buffer, X-ray rocking curve analysis reveals a remarkable reduction in the full width at half maximum, both on-axis and off-axis. Atomic force microscopy image exhibits a fully coalesced pit-free surface morphology with low root-mean-square roughness (similar to 1.5 nm). Photoluminescence is carried out on the a-plane GaN grown on r-plane sapphire. It is found that, at low temperature, the dominant emission at similar to 3.42 eV is composed of two separate peaks with different characteristics, which provide explanations for the controversial attributions of this peak in previous studies. We consider the Schr\"odinger operator on a star shaped graph with edges
joined at a single vertex. We derive an expression for the trace of the
difference of the perturbed and unperturbed resolvent in terms of a Wronskian.
This leads to representations for the perturbation determinant and the spectral
shift function, and to an analog of Levinson's formula
Monte-Carlo simulation of neutron transmission through nanocomposite materials for neutron-optics applications
Nanocomposites enable us to tune parameters that are crucial for use of such
materials for neutron-optics applications such as diffraction gratings by
careful choice of properties such as species (isotope) and concentration of
contained nanoparticles. Nanocomposites for neutron optics have so far
successfully been deployed in protonated form, containing high amounts of H
atoms, which exhibit rather strong neutron absorption and incoherent
scattering. At a future stage of development, chemicals containing H could
be replaced by components with more favourable isotopes, such as H or
F. In this note, we present results of Monte-Carlo simulations of the
transmissivity of various nanocomposite materials for thermal and very-cold
neutron spectra. The results are compared to experimental transmission data.
Our simulation results for deuterated and fluorinated nanocomposite materials
predict a decrease of absorption- and scattering-losses down to about 2 % for

Soft biomimetic tapered babostructures for large-area antireflective surfaces and SERS sensing
Cataloged from PDF version of article.We report a facile fabrication method for the fabrication of functional large area nanostructured polymer films using a drop casting technique. Reusable and tapered silicon molds were utilized in the production of functional polymers providing rapid fabrication of the paraboloid nanostructures at the desired structural heights without the requirement of any complex production conditions, such as high temperature or pressure. The fabricated polymer films demonstrate promising qualities in terms of antireflective, hydrophobic and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) features. We achieved up to 92% transmission from the single-side nanostructured polymer films by implementing optimized nanostructure parameters which were determined using a finite difference time domain (FDTD) method prior to production. Large-area nanostructured films were observed to enhance the Raman signal with an enhancement factor of 4.9 x 10(6) compared to bare film, making them potentially suitable as freestanding SERS substrates. The utilized fabrication method with its demonstrated performances and reliable material properties, paves the way for further possibilities in biological, optical, and electronic applications
Metalorganic chemical vapor deposition growth and thermal stability of the AllNN/GaN high electron mobility transistor structure
Cataloged from PDF version of article.The AlxIn1-xN barrier high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) structure has been optimized with varied barrier composition and thickness grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. After optimization, a transistor structure comprising a 7 nm thick nearly lattice-matched Al0.83In0.17 N barrier exhibits a sheet electron density of 2.0 x 10(13) cm(-2) with a high electron mobility of 1540 cm(2) V-1 s(-1). AnAl(0.83)In(0.17)N barrier HEMT device with 1 mu m gate length provides a current density of 1.0 A mm(-1) at V-GS = 0 V and an extrinsic transconductance of 242 mS mm(-1), which are remarkably improved compared to that of a conventional Al0.3Ga0.7N barrier HEMT. To investigate the thermal stability of the HEMT epi-structures, post-growth annealing experiments up to 800 degrees C have been applied to Al0.83In0.17N and Al0.3Ga0.7N barrier heterostructures. As expected, the electrical properties of an Al0.83In0.17N barrier HEMT structure showed less stability than that of an Al0.3Ga0.7N barrier HEMT to the thermal annealing. The structural properties of Al0.83In0.17N/GaN also showed more evidence for decomposition than that of the Al0.3Ga0.7N/GaN structure after 800 degrees C post-annealing
