Heat Sensing Receptor TRPV1 Is a Mediator of Thermotaxis in Human Spermatozoa
The molecular bases of sperm thermotaxis, the temperature-oriented cell motility, are currently under investigation. Thermal perception relies on a subclass of the transient receptor potential [TRP] channels, whose member TRPV1 is acknowledged as the heat sensing receptor. Here we investigated the involvement of TRPV1 in human sperm thermotaxis. We obtained semen samples from 16 normozoospermic subjects attending an infertility survey programme, testis biopsies from 6 patients with testicular germ cell cancer and testis fine needle aspirates from 6 patients with obstructive azoospermia undergoing assisted reproductive technologies. Expression of TRPV1 mRNA was assessed by RT-PCR. Protein expression of TRPV1 was determined by western blot, flow cytometry and immunofluorescence. Sperm motility was assessed by Sperm Class Analyser. Acrosome reaction, apoptosis and intracellular-Ca2+ content were assessed by flow cytometry. We found that TRPV1 mRNA and protein were highly expressed in the testis, in both Sertoli cells and germ-line cells. Moreover, compared to no-gradient controls at 31°C or 37°C (Ctrl 31°C and Ctrl 37°C respectively), sperm migration towards a temperature gradient of 31-37°C (T gradient) in non-capacitated conditions selected a higher number of cells (14,9 ± 4,2Ă106 cells T gradient vs 5,1± 0,3Ă106 cells Ctrl 31°C and 5,71±0,74Ă106 cells Ctrl 37°C; P = 0,039). Capacitation amplified the migrating capability towards the T gradient. Sperms migrated towards the T gradient showed enriched levels of both TRPV1 protein and mRNA. In addition, sperm cells were able to migrate toward a gradient of capsaicin, a specific agonist of TRPV1, whilst capsazepine, a specific agonist of TRPV1, blocked this effect. Finally, capsazepine severely blunted migration towards T gradient without abolishing. These results suggest that TRPV1 may represent a facilitating mediator of sperm thermotaxis
Electroweak lights from Dark Matter annihilations
The energy spectra of Standard Model particles originated from Dark Matter
annihilations can be significantly altered by the inclusion of electroweak
gauge boson radiation from the final state. A situation where this effect is
particularly important is when a Majorana Dark Matter particle annihilates into
two light fermions. This process is in p-wave and hence suppressed by the small
value of the relative velocity of the annihilating particles. The inclusion of
electroweak radiation eludes this suppression and opens up a potentially
sizeable s-wave contribution to the annihilation cross section. I will discuss
the impact of this effect on the fluxes of stable particles resulting from the
Dark Matter annihilations, which are relevant for Dark Matter indirect

Erupted Complex Odontoma Mimicking a Mandibular Second Molar
Complex odontoma (CO) is considered one of the most common odontogenic lesions, composed by a miscellaneous of dental tissue such as enamel, dentin, pulp and sometimes cementum. They may interfere with the eruption of an associated tooth, being more prevalent in the posterior mandible. CO has been rarely reported as erupted, being considered an intraosseous lesion. This is a case report of a 17-year-old male with a benign fibro-osseous lesion consistent with CO that was located at the left second molar region, above the crown of the impacted mandibular second molar tooth. The lesion was surgically removed, and the tooth had to be extracted, since there was no indication that it could erupt naturally or with orthodontic traction. The histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of CO and after 6 months complete bone formation was observed radiographically. An early diagnosis will provide a better treatment option, avoiding tooth extraction or a more damaging surgery
Tracheocutaneous fistula in patients undergoing supracricoid partial laryngectomy: the role of chronic aspiration
The aim of the present retrospective controlled study was to analyse and compare risk factors for tracheocutaneous fistula in patients who received tracheostomy after supracricoid partial laryngectomy with those who received tracheostomy for other causes. We enrolled 39 patients with tracheocutaneous fistulas who were divided into two groups. The first received temporary tracheostomy for supracricoid partial laryngectomies (n = 21), while the control group consisted of patients who received temporary tracheostomy for other causes (n = 18). Risk factors believed to play a role in the pathogenesis of tracheocutaneous fistula were examined including advanced age, cardiopathy, local infections, radiotherapy, elevated body mass index, malnutrition, decannulation time and aspiration grade. The Leipzig and Pearson scale score was significantly higher in the supracricoid partial laryngectomy group (p = 0.006 and 0.031 for univariate and multivariate analyses, respectively). The penetration/aspiration scale score was significantly higher in the supracricoid partial laryngectomy group as determined by univariate analysis (p = 0.014). The decannulation time was significantly lower in the supracricoid partial laryngectomy group (p = 0.004 and 0.0004 for univariate and multivariate analyses, respectively). The number of surgical closures for tracheocutaneous fistula was significantly higher in the supracricoid partial laryngectomy group by univariate analysis (p = 0.027). These results suggest that chronic aspiration and related cough may be important pathogenic factors for tracheocutaneous fistula and could be responsible for the significantly higher rates of closure failure in patients after supracricoid partial laryngectomy
Exploiting quantum parallelism of entanglement for a complete experimental quantum characterization of a single qubit device
We present the first full experimental quantum tomographic characterization
of a single-qubit device achieved with a single entangled input state. The
entangled input state plays the role of all possible input states in quantum
parallel on the tested device. The method can be trivially extended to any

Design of an RSFQ Control Circuit to Observe MQC on an rf-SQUID
We believe that the best chance to observe macroscopic quantum coherence
(MQC) in a rf-SQUID qubit is to use on-chip RSFQ digital circuits for
preparing, evolving and reading out the qubit's quantum state. This approach
allows experiments to be conducted on a very short time scale (sub-nanosecond)
without the use of large bandwidth control lines that would couple
environmental degrees of freedom to the qubit thus contributing to its
decoherence. In this paper we present our design of a RSFQ digital control
circuit for demonstrating MQC in a rf-SQUID. We assess some of the key
practical issues in the circuit design including the achievement of the
necessary flux bias stability. We present an "active" isolation structure to be
used to increase coherence times. The structure decouples the SQUID from
external degrees of freedom, and then couples it to the output measurement
circuitry when required, all under the active control of RSFQ circuits.

Olfactory evaluation in obstructive sleep apnoea patients
The sense of smell has a high impact on the quality of life. The aim of the present study was to investigate olfactory dysfunction in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) and correlate the severity of disease with olfactory dysfunction. The relationships between nasal obstruction, nasal mucociliary cleareance and olfactory tests were also evaluated. Sixty patients with a diagnosis of OSAS were enrolled and underwent olfactory function evaluation. In all patients olfactory performance was tested with the Sniffinâ Sticks method. Mucociliary transport times and anterior rhinomanometry were performed to identify eventual nasal obstruction and deficits in nasal mucociliary clearance. Olfactory dysfunction was present in 22 (36.6%) patients of the study group: of these, hyposmia was present in 19 (86.4%) and anosmia in 3 (13.6%). The mean TDI score in the study group was 30. A strong correlation between the olfactory dysfunction and severity of sleep apnoea measured using the AHI was found. Patients with OSA would seem to have a high incidence of olfactory dysfunction. The degree of olfactory dysfunction appears to be related to the severity of disease. However, other co-factors such as nasal obstruction and reduced mucociliary clearance might also play a role in of the aetiology of this condition
