    In vitro degradation and in vivo biocompatibility of chitosan-poly(butylene succinate) fiber mesh scaffolds

    In tissue engineering, the evaluation of the host response to the biomaterial implantation must be assessed to determine the extent of the inflammatory reaction. We studied the degradation of poly(butylene succinate) and chitosan in vitro using lipase and lysozyme enzymes, respectively. The subcutaneous implantation of the scaffolds was performed to assess tissue response. The type of inflammatory cells present in the surrounding tissue, as well as within the scaffold, was determined histologically and by immunohistochemistry. In the presence of lipase or lysozyme, the water uptake of the scaffolds increased. Based on the weight loss data and scanning electron microscopy analysis, the lysozyme combined with lipase had a notable effect on the in vitro degradation of the scaffolds. The in vivo implantation showed a normal inflammatory response, with presence of neutrophils, in a first stage, and macrophages, lymphocytes, and giant cells in a later stage. Vascularization in the surrounding tissue and within the implant increased with time. Moreover, the collagen deposition increased with time inside the implant. In vivo, the scaffolds maintained the structural integrity.     Total Glossectomy in the Organ Preservation Era - Functional Outcomes and Survival

    Objetivos: Avaliação de doentes submetidos a glossectomia total (GT). Material e Métodos: Estudo retrospetivo que incluiu os doentes submetidos a GT entre 2009 e 2018 no serviço de Otorrinolaringologia do IPOLFG. Resultados: Foram incluídos 27 doentes. A vasta maioria dos doentes (78%) apresentava tumor em estadio avançado (IV). A GT foi realizada como tratamento de resgate em 56% dos casos. A reconstrução foi maioritariamente realizada recorrendo a retalho de grande peitoral (59%). 93% dos doentes foram laringectomizados. 30% dos doentes alcançaram função da deglutição adequada. No período de follow-up médio de 21 meses, 14 (52%) doentes recidivaram. As taxas de sobrevida a 1 e 5 anos foram de 52% e 22%. Conclusões: A GT foi maioritariamente realizada em casos de recidiva de doença após protocolo de preservação de órgão. Tem um impacto na qualidade de vida ao afetar quer a deglutição quer a fala. São doentes com recidiva locoregional elevada e com taxa de sobrevida baixa, mas é uma opção importante quando as alternativas terapêuticas são limitadas.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Gaze patterns to child figures reflect deviant sexual preference in child sex offenders: a first glance

    Research on non-offending heterosexual participants has indicated that men’s gaze allocation reflects their sexual preference. In this exploratory pilot study we investigated whether naturalistic gaze behaviour is sensitive to deviant sexual preferences. We compared gaze patterns of convicted heterosexual child sex offenders (CSOs; n = 13) with female victims to heterosexual non-offending men (n = 13) in a task of free-viewing images of clothed male and female figures aged 10, 20 and 40 years. CSOs dedicated more fixations to the upper body of the female child than male child figures. The pattern was different for the control sample, whose gaze pattern to male and female figures could only be differentiated when viewing adult figures. CSOs showed significantly greater difference in their gaze towards the upper body of male and female children than non-offenders. Our findings provide preliminary evidence for eye-tracking as a potential method of assessing deviant sexual interest

    PhenoWorld : a new paradigm to screen rodent behavior

    Modeling depression in animals has inherent complexities that are augmented by intrinsic difficulties to measure the characteristic features of the disorder. Herein, we describe the PhenoWorld (PhW), a new setting in which groups of six rats lived in an ethological enriched environment, and have their feeding, locomotor activity, sleeping and social behavior automatically monitored. A battery of emotional and cognitive tests was used to characterize the behavioral phenotype of animals living in the PhW and in standard conditions (in groups of six and two rats), after exposure to an unpredictable chronic mild stress paradigm (uCMS) and antidepressants. Data reveal that animals living in the PhW displayed similar, but more striking, behavioral differences when exposed to uCMS, such as increased behavioral despair shown in the forced swimming test, resting/sleep behavior disturbances and reduced social interactions. Moreover, several PhW-cage behaviors, such as spontaneous will to go for food or exercise in running wheels, proved to be sensitive indicators of depressive-like behavior. In summary, this new ethological enriched paradigm adds significant discriminative power to screen depressive-like behavior, in particularly rodent's hedonic behavior
