    Particle and particle pair dispersion in turbulence modeled with spatially and temporally correlated stochastic processes

    In this paper we present a new model for modeling the diffusion and relative dispersion of particles in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. We use an Heisenberg-like Hamiltonian to incorporate spatial correlations between fluid particles, which are modeled by stochastic processes correlated in time. We are able to reproduce the ballistic regime in the mean squared displacement of single particles and the transition to a normal diffusion regime for long times. For the dispersion of particle pairs we find a t2t^{2}-dependence of the mean squared separation at short times and a tt-dependence for long ones. For intermediate times indications for a Richardson t3t^{3} law are observed in certain situations.     Summary of abalone poaching trend estimates as updated in 2013

    The analysis in 2013 using up to four separate indicators to estimate the trend in poaching indicates that the target of a 15% per annum reduction in poaching since 2009 has not been reached. In fact, indices suggest a continued and substantial increase in poaching, commencing from October 2009 (note that trends are assessed per ‘model year’, that runs from October in one year (y-1) to September in the following year, y). The 15% per annum decline was a key criterion for rebuilding the abalone resource and was amongst the conditions set by the Minister associated with reopening the fishery. While at this time some four years after re-opening of the fishery, a net 50% reduction in poaching was required under the rebuilding plan, results indicated that poaching has increased by some 150%

    Sensitivity and Response of Bhutanese Glaciers to Atmospheric Warming

    Glacierized change in the Himalayas affects river-discharge, hydro-energy and agricultural production, and Glacial Lake Outburst Flood potential, but its quantification and extent of impacts remains highly uncertain. Here we present conservative, comprehensive and quantitative predictions for glacier area and meltwater flux changes in Bhutan, monsoonal Himalayas. In particular, we quantify the uncertainties associated with the glacier area and meltwater flux changes due to uncertainty in climate data, a critical problem for much of High Asia. Based on a suite of gridded climate data and a robust glacier melt model, our results show that glacier area and meltwater change projections can vary by an order of magnitude for different climate datasets. However, the most conservative results indicate that, even if climate were to remain at the present-day mean values, almost 10% of Bhutan s glacierized area would vanish and the meltwater flux would drop by as much as 30%. Under the conservative scenario of an additional 1 C regional warming, glacier retreat is going to continue until about 25% of Bhutan s glacierized area will have disappeared and the annual meltwater flux, after an initial spike, would drop by as much as 65%.
