Extra ZZ bosons and low-energy tests of unification

If there is an extra U(1) gauge symmetry broken at low energies, then it may be possible from the charges of the known quarks and leptons under this U(1) to make inferences about how much gauge unification occurs at high scales and about the unification group. (For instance, there are certain observed properties of an extra $U(1)'$ that would be inconsistent with unification in four dimensions at high scales.) A general analysis is presented. Early modern English understanding of Islam through the 1649 Alcoran of Mahomet

In search of sources that dealt with Islam in the 16th and 17thc I came across Samuel Chew\u27s The Crescent and the Rose. Chew\u27s book is best likened to a catalog where he manages to list a great number of works written prior to and during Early Modern England that dealt primarily with Islam. Of the thousands of sources that Chew listed one was of particular interest to me, namely the first English translation of the Koran in 1649. With the help of my major professor and the staff in the microform room at Parks Library, I was able to obtain a copy of The 1649 Alcoran of Mahomet, and decided to explore Early Modern English Understanding of Islam through it

Beta-hemolytic streptococcus group A endocarditis: a rare clinical presentation

A case report of an elderly gentleman is reported herein, who presented with one week history of fever, drowsiness and left lower limb weakness. Examination revealed left lower limb weakness with power of grade 3/5. His workup showed evidence of infection and multiple cerebral infarcts on the right side. Blood culture grew Streptococcus pyogens. Echocardiogram showed two vegetations on the aortic valve. Fever was the main presenting feature in this case but it was the presentation of patient with multiple cerebral infarcts that lead to the diagnosis of infective endocarditis. Anthropic tuning of the weak scale and of m_u/m_d in two-Higgs-doublet models

It is shown that in a model in which up-type and down-type fermions acquire mass from different Higgs doublets, the anthropic tuning of the Higgs mass parameters can explain the fact that the observed masses of the $d$ and $u$ quarks are nearly the same with $d$ slightly heavier. If Yukawa couplings are assumed not to "scan" (vary among domains), this would also help explain why the t quark is much heavier than the b quark. It is also pointed out that the existence of dark matter invalidates some earlier anthropic arguments against the viability of domains where the Standard Model Higgs has positive $\mu^2$, but makes other even stronger arguments possible.Comment: 31 pages, 7 figure

Building a Disciplinary, World-Wide Data Infrastructure

Sharing scientific data, with the objective of making it fully discoverable, accessible, assessable, intelligible, usable, and interoperable, requires work at the disciplinary level to define in particular how the data should be formatted and described. Each discipline has its own organization and history as a starting point, and this paper explores the way a range of disciplines, namely materials science, crystallography, astronomy, earth sciences, humanities and linguistics get organized at the international level to tackle this question. In each case, the disciplinary culture with respect to data sharing, science drivers, organization and lessons learnt are briefly described, as well as the elements of the specific data infrastructure which are or could be shared with others. Commonalities and differences are assessed. Common key elements for success are identified: data sharing should be science driven; defining the disciplinary part of the interdisciplinary standards is mandatory but challenging; sharing of applications should accompany data sharing. Incentives such as journal and funding agency requirements are also similar. For all, it also appears that social aspects are more challenging than technological ones. Governance is more diverse, and linked to the discipline organization. CODATA, the RDA and the WDS can facilitate the establishment of disciplinary interoperability frameworks. Eco Green Campus pada Gedung Dekanat Fakultas Peternakan

Fenomena pemanasan global kini menjadi isu populer, yaitu naiknya suhu bumi dikarenakan peningkatan efek rumah kaca. Perjanjian Internasional diadakan agar semua negara dapat berkontribusi mengurangi pemanasan global tersebut. Indonesia sudah berkomitmen dengan menurunkan suhu sebesar 2' C. Universitas Brawijaya, salah satu Universitas di Kota Malang memiliki program Eco Green Campus dengan Fakultas Peternakan sebagai Fakultas yang mempelopori namun dari segi konservasi kawasan. Penelitian mengkaji terkait tingkat ramah lingkungan pada Gedung di Fakultas Peternakan. Gedung Dekanat Fakultas Peternakan atau Gedung V dipilih karena termasuk gedung yang baru dibangun dan berlantai banyak. Metode penelitian yang digunakan yaitu deskriptif yang dilakukan dengan observasi lapangan dan studi literatur dengan metode analisa data yaitu metode deskriptif dengan mendeskripsikan data yang didapat sesuai dengan 6 kriteria Greenship-GBCI yang menjadi acuan. Hasil penelitian menunjukan Gedung objek studi tidak memenuhi predikat mengacu pada predikat minimum GBCI, dan perlu adanya rekomendasi dan evaluasi untuk meningkatkan kualitas bangunan melalui tolak ukur GBCI untuk menunjang Eco green campus

A Realistic Radiative Fermion Mass Hierarchy in Non-supersymmetric SO(10)

A non-supersymmetric grand unified theory can exhibit a "radiative fermion mass hierarchy", in which the heavier quarks and leptons get mass at tree level and the lighter ones get mass from loop diagrams. Recently the first predictive model of this type was proposed. Here it is analyzed numerically and it is shown to give an excellent fit to the quark and lepton masses and mixings, including the CP phase violating phase $\delta_{CKM}$. Effect of amino acid composition of cereal-based diets on growth of preschool children

The efficacy of two diets, one based on wheat and the other on rice, on the growth (height) of preschool children has been tested in trials lasting 6 months. Both diets provided 2 g vegetable protein and 100 kcal/kg body wt. The increase in height of the children fed the rice-based diet was 0.67 cm/month and that of the children on the wheat-based diet, 0.43 cm/month. The children maintained positive nitrogen balance on both diets. Amino acid analyses of the cooked foods showed the wheat-based diet to be limiting in lysine, methionine, threonine, and isoleucine and the rice-based diet in methionine. However, the rate of growth of the children fed the rice-based diet suggests that methionine was not a limiting factor; the recommended intake of methionine (FAO/WHO) is likely to be higher than the requirements of preschool children
