    Optimization of the wavesax device: numerical modelling and ocean wave basin tests

    The Wavesax device has been conceived to be installed in ports and harbours, in the Mediterranean sea. Therefore, two aspects are quite important: flexibility of the device to fit in different structural configurations and replication in a large number of units. Preliminary numerical modelling of the fixed component of the device has been performed using Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis (RANS-CFD model) and considering four regular wave conditions typical of the Mediterranean sea. Main issues to be considered in the first stage scale modelling analysis are the effective functionality of the device conception (scale 1:20), the optimization of the design and position of the device in terms of generated velocity gradients in the working section where the turbine blades are installed. The main parameters to be investigated, both with numerical modelling and ocean wave basin tests, are the pressure field in different sections of the device, water levels for different wave conditions and device sinking. Following the scale model test, the numerical model was calibrated and validated. The paper presents the results of the numerical simulations related to different configurations of the device, under typical Mediterranean wave climates

    Circles, columns and screenings: mapping the institutional, discursive, physical and gendered spaces of film criticism in 1940s London

    This article revisits the period considered within ‘The Quality Film Adventure: British Critics and the Cinema 1942-1948’, mapping the professional cultures, working contexts and industry relationships that underpinned the aesthetic judgements and collective directions which John Ellis has observed within the critics published writings. Drawing on the records of the Critics’ Circle, Dilys Powell’s papers and Kinematograph Weekly, it explores the evolution of increasingly organised professional cultures of film criticism and film publicity, arguing that the material conditions imposed by war caused tensions between them to escalate. In the context of two major challenges to critical integrity and practice – the evidence given by British producer R.J. Minney in front of the 1948 Royal Commission on the Press and an ongoing libel case between a BBC critic and MGM – the different spaces of hospitality and film promotion became highly contested sites. This article focuses on the ways in which these spaces were characterised, used, and policed. It finds that the value and purpose of press screenings were hotly disputed and observes the way the advancement of women within one sector (film criticism) but not the other (film publicity) created particular difficulties, as key female critics avoided the more compromised masculine spaces of publicity, making them harder for publicists to reach and fuelling trade resentment. More broadly, the article asserts the need to consider film critics as geographically and culturally located audiences, who experience films as ‘professional’ viewers within extended and embodied cultures of habitual professional practice and physical space

    Geomorphology of the urban area of Palermo (Italy)

    The results of a geomorphological study carried out in the urban area of Palermo are summarized in a thematic map. Field survey, analysis of aerial photographs and topographic maps, consultation of historical documents and maps, stratigraphic and topographic reconstruction from numerous wells and subsoil data, and bibliographic search were performed, in order to display the geomorphological changes produced by man over time in a densely populated area and to define the Anthropocene of the study area. Palermo town rises along large marine terrace surfaces cut by small river valleys and bordered by wide degraded and abandoned coastal cliffs. Over the last 2700 years, this area was affected by remarkable man-made changes to topographic surface and underground, exposing large areas of the city to hydraulic, sinkhole, and landslide risks, and increasing the levels of seismic susceptibility. In light of these results, the produced map is useful for urban planning studies

    Geo-hazards of the San Vito peninsula offshore (southwestern Tyrrhenian Sea)

    In this paper we present geomorphological hazard mapping of the San Vito Peninsula offshore (Sicilian margin of Tyrrhenian Sea), characterised by a very narrow continental shelf and a very dipping, tectonically active continental slope, no far from a seismogenic belt. The data set consists of morpho-bathymetric models achieved by means of multibeam survey and scattered high resolution seismic profiles. The morpho-bathymetric study highlighted some potential sites of geomorphological hazards, the most representative of which are: (i) two canyons developing from the upper slope off San Vito Cape down to the Erice basin; (ii) a dense network of small incisions across the upper slope; (iii) a very active landslide, developed onland and extending in the continental shelf close to the Scopello village. The geomorphological features that can generate submarine hazard are represented by: unstable sediment packages into canyon heads or along the upper slope; submarine canyons with regressive erosion; coastal landslides

    Quaternary marine and continental unconformity-bounded stratigraphic units of the NW Sicily coastal belt

    In the coastal sector of NW Sicily, the regional correlation of relevant unconformities recognised within the Quaternary sedimentary successions allowed the mapping of seven unconformitybounded stratigraphic units (UBSUs). The regional unconformities are marine or subaerial erosional surfaces, as well as non-depositional surfaces, locally marked by paleosoils. The erosional surfaces were produced from marine abrasion, surface water overland/ concentrated flow, river erosion, karst solution, mass movement, or wind erosion. The main lithofacies of the Quaternary UBSUs consist of: (a) marine and coastal bioclastic calcarenites, (b) aeolian sandstones, (c) river deposits, (d) colluvial deposits, (e) talus slope deposits, (f) landslide deposits, and (g) chemical carbonates (travertines and speleothems). Quaternary environmental changes, due to tectonics, climate, and sea-level oscillations, are the causes that favoured the development of erosion/deposition processes responsible for the genesis of unconformities and deposits. As a result, through the UBSU map of the NW Sicilian coastal belt, it is possible to: (i) recognise stratigraphic units controlled by tectonic, climatic, and environmental processes (and their interplay) and (ii) detect Quaternary sedimentary evolution

    A Behavior-Based Intrusion Detection System Using Ensemble Learning Techniques

    Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) play a key role in modern ICT security. Attacks detected and reported by IDSs are often analyzed by administrators who are tasked with countering the attack and minimizing its damage. Consequently, it is important that the alerts generated by the IDS are as detailed as possible. In this paper, we present a multi-layered behavior-based IDS using ensemble learning techniques for the classification of network attacks. Three widely adopted and appreciated models, i.e., Decision Trees, Random Forests, and Artificial Neural Networks, have been chosen to build the ensemble. To reduce the system response time, our solution is designed to immediately filter out traffic detected as benign without further analysis, while suspicious events are investigated to achieve a more fine-grained classification. Experimental evaluation performed on the CIC-IDS2017 public dataset shows that the system is able to detect nine categories of attacks with high performances, according to all the considered metrics

    Submarine Geomorphology and Sedimentary Features around the Egadi Islands (Western Mediterranean Sea)

    The physiography, the geomorphological features and the sedimentary bedforms offshore Egadi Islands (Italy) have been illustrated and mapped through an integrated analysis of high-resolution bathymetric, seismo-acoustic and sedimentological data. The study area is characterized by a wide, up to 25 km, continental shelf which is separated by a NNW trending linear incision, the Marettimo Channel, along which several erosional and depositional features have been detected and mapped. Sedimentary prograding wedges were detected at water depths between 100-125 m along the shelf margin, which accumulated during sea level fall and lowstand stages of the last glacio-eustatic cycle (post- MIS 5.5). The study detected several slope breaks defining scarps across the continental shelf, which were interpreted as coastal cliffs that originated during the post-LGM eustatic sea level rise. Several fields of different types of sedimentary bedforms, including 2-D and 3-D hydraulic dunes and sorted bedforms, were found across the continental shelf, providing evidence of a high hydrodynamic regime affecting the seafloor. Further on, the study recognized erosive and depositional features related to bottom currents (contourites) in the Marettimo Channel. These findings provide a better understanding of the morpho-sedimentary evolution of the Egadi Islands offshore in the latest Quaternary. Moreover, they offer essential scientific support for effectively managing the most valuable priority habitats for conservation , such as Posidonia oceanica meadow and coralline algae bioconstructions (Coralligenous habitat)

    VARIABILITY OF DEPOSITIONAL SETTING ALONG THE NORTH-WESTERN SICILY CONTINENTAL SHELF (ITALY) DURING LATE QUATERNARY: EFFECTS OF SEA LEVEL CHANGES AND TECTONIC EVOLUTION

    The geological, geomorphological and sedimentological features of the north-western Sicily continental shelf are here illustrated with the aim to propose a geological model able to explain the Neogene-Quaternary evolution of the Sicilian continental margin in the context of the central Mediterranean region. Above the continental shelf and upper slope the sedimentary succession, showing along the different sectors of the margin considerably variable internal geometry and stratigraphic relationships with the underlying units, is interpreted as a IV order depositional sequence (Late Quaternary Depositional Sequence, LQDS) deposited during the last eustatic change (last 125 ky). The lower boundary of the LQDS is represented by a subaerial erosional surface formed during the last eustatic sea level fall ended in the LGM (20-18 ka). This unconformity lies above a seaward dipping Pleistocene succession whose depositional architecture is in turn controlled by Quaternary eustatic sea-level fluctuations. A dense dataset of morphobathymetric and high resolution seismic data allowed to recognize along the continental shelf to bathyal plain system different types of continental shelf with different stratigraphic and morphostructural settings, associated to both large-scale processes and specific factors related to more local control: a) predominantly rocky shelves, both accompanied by a moderate frontal sedimentary prism and with a structural edge, in the structural highs of the Monti di Palermo offshore and around the main rocky headlands (Capo San Vito, Monte Catalfano); b), depositional shelves, in the Castellammare, Palermo and Termini Imerese gulfs, both with a regular seaward deepening of the substrate and with a substrate uplift at the shelf break. We confirm that depositional sequences in this margin are the result of the interaction between sea level changes and sedimentation, but demonstrate that the tectonic activity has played a key role, not only in the creation of different types of continental shelves, but also to determine the different characters of each sequence in different areas. The general tectonic uplift during the Pleistocene, together with the episodic alternation of extensional and compressional events, often with strike-slip component, is responsible for the thickness and facies variation both onland, where residual Pleistocene marine deposits today outcrops, and in the continental shelf, where most of the depositional sequences developed and are now recognized. As well tectonic activity exerted a control on the geomorphological features (e.g. pockmarks and mounds) of the present day coastal areas and shelf-slope system, as well as for the submarine canyons and the mass failure processes
