    Second order perturbation theory for embedded eigenvalues

    We study second order perturbation theory for embedded eigenvalues of an abstract class of self-adjoint operators. Using an extension of the Mourre theory, under assumptions on the regularity of bound states with respect to a conjugate operator, we prove upper semicontinuity of the point spectrum and establish the Fermi Golden Rule criterion. Our results apply to massless Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonians for arbitrary coupling.Comment: 30 pages, 2 figure

    Elementary analysis of the special relativistic combination of velocities, Wigner rotation, and Thomas precession

    The purpose of this paper is to provide an elementary introduction to the qualitative and quantitative results of velocity combination in special relativity, including the Wigner rotation and Thomas precession. We utilize only the most familiar tools of special relativity, in arguments presented at three differing levels: (1) utterly elementary, which will suit a first course in relativity; (2) intermediate, to suit a second course; and (3) advanced, to suit higher level students.     Quality-of-life studies are ideally suited to fulfilling the new international youth research agenda, which focuses on ‘positive youth development’ to make recommendations for policy and practice. The paper reports a South African case study conducted among disadvantaged youth for this purpose. A sample survey of close on 900 African youth, aged 15-24 years, sought to identify indicators of positive development to serve as goals of youth and community work in Grahamstown East/Rini, in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The setting is unique. This mainly rural province is among the poorest, least developed, and has one of highest unemployment rates. Nevertheless, Grahamstown may offer special development opportunities for local youth due to the proximity of the city centre and diverse extension projects for youth. The survey found that development opportunities were unequally distributed with the materially advantaged youth being more exposed to development opportunities through their schools, spare time activities, and community contacts. They were more ambitious than others and more aware of risks facing contemporary youth. Advantaged youth also reported higher levels of subjective well-being and optimism, findings consistent with earlier studies conducted among adult populations, which report remarkable congruence between material and subjective well-being among South Africans. The analysis used overall life satisfaction as key indicator of successful youth development to learn more about major youth aspirations and goals. In conclusion, the study was able to identify a youth development initiative based on the aspirations of the youth, which might be pursued as a researcher-practitioner partnership project in line with the new international youth research agenda

    Influence of gas flow rate on liquid distribution in trickle-beds using perforated plates as liquid distributors

    Two wire mesh tomography devices and a liquid collector were used to study the influence of the gas flow rate on liquid distribution when fluids distribution on top of the reactor is ensured by a perforated plate. In opposition to most of the studies realized by other authors, conditions in which the gas has a negative impact in liquid distribution were evidenced. Indeed, the obtained results show that the influence of gas flow rate depends on the quality of the initial distribution, as the gas forces the liquid to "respect" the distribution imposed at the top of the reactor.     Individual- and Neighbourhood-Level Indicators of Subjective Well-Being in a Small and Poor Eastern Cape Township: The Effect of Health, Social Capital, Marital Status, and Income

    Our study used multilevel regression analysis to identify individual- and neighbourhood-level factors that determine individual-level subjective well-being in Rhini, a deprived suburb of Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The Townsend index and Gini coefficient were used to investigate whether contextual neighbourhood-level differences in socioeconomic status determined individual-level subjective well-being. Crime experience, health status, social capital, and demographic variables were assessed at the individual level. The indicators of subjective well-being were estimated with a two-level random-intercepts and fixed slopes model. Social capital, health and marital status (all p < .001), followed by income level (p < .01) and the Townsend score (p < .05) were significantly related to individual-level subjective well-being outcomes. Our findings showed that individual-level subjective well-being is influenced by neighbourhood-level socioeconomic status as measured by the Townsend deprivation score. Individuals reported higher levels of subjective well-being in less deprived neighbourhoods. Here we wish to highlight the role of context for subjective well-being, and to suggest that subjective well-being outcomes may also be defined in ecological terms. We hope the findings are useful for implementing programs and interventions designed to achieve greater subjective well-being for people living in deprived areas

    The carbohydrate inulin is known to reduce the production of skatole in pigs. This is caused by inulin changing the intestinal flora, so that the bacteria that produce skatole are held in check. This change in intestinal flora also reduces the number of intestinal parasites in the pigs. However the high cost of inulin makes its use in pig feed impractical. Chicory root contains inulin and a series of other carbohydrates and secondary metabolites. Therefore we have examined whether chicory root can replace pure inulin and thereby reduce boar taint, improve the taste of pork and reduce the infection of pigs with pathogenic parasites and bacteria

    We study accelerating relativistic reference frames in Minkowski space-time under the harmonic gauge. It is well-known that the harmonic gauge imposes constraints on the components of the metric tensor and also on the functional form of admissible coordinate transformations. These two sets of constraints are equivalent and represent the dual nature of the harmonic gauge. We explore this duality and show that the harmonic gauge allows presenting an accelerated metric in an elegant form that depends only on two harmonic potentials. It also allows reconstruction of the spatial structure of the post-Galilean coordinate transformation functions relating inertial and accelerating frames. The remaining temporal dependence of these functions together with corresponding equations of motion are determined from dynamical conditions, obtained by constructing the relativistic proper reference frame of an accelerated test particle. In this frame, the effect of external forces acting on the observer is balanced by the fictitious frame-reaction force that is needed to keep the test particle at rest with respect to the frame, conserving its relativistic linear momentum. We find that this approach is sufficient to determine all the terms of the coordinate transformation. The same method is then used to develop the inverse transformations. The resulting post-Galilean coordinate transformations extend the Poincar\'e group on the case of accelerating observers. We present and discuss the resulting coordinate transformations, relativistic equations of motion, and the structure of the metric tensors corresponding to the relativistic reference frames involved.Comment: revtex4, 21 page

    The gravitational energy-momentum flux

    We present a continuity equation for the gravitational energy-momentum, which is obtained in the framework of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity. From this equation it follows a general definition for the gravitational energy-momentum flux. This definition is investigated in the context of plane waves and of cylindrical Einstein-Rosen waves. We obtain the well known value for the energy flux of plane gravitational waves, and conclude that the latter exhibit features similar to plane electromagnetic waves.Comment: 20 pages, latex file, no figures, two references added, accepted for publication in Class.
