Domain formation in transitions with noise and time-dependent bifurcation parameter
The characteristic size for spatial structure, that emerges when the
bifurcation parameter in model partial differential equations is slowly
increased through its critical value, depends logarithmically on the size of
added noise. Numerics and analysis are presented for the real Ginzburg-Landau
and Swift-Hohenberg equations.Comment: RevTex, 4 pages, 4 postscript figures include
Diffusion-Limited Reaction in One Dimension: Paired and Unpaired Nucleation
We consider the dynamics of diffusing particles in one space dimension with
annihilation on collision and nucleation (creation of particles) with constant
probability per unit time and length. The cases of nucleation of single
particles and nucleation in pairs are considered. A new method of analysis
permits exact calculation of the steady state density and its time evolution in
terms of the three parameters describing the microscopic dynamics: the
nucleation rate, the initial separation of nucleated pairs and the diffusivity
of a particle. For paired nucleation at sufficiently small initial separation
the nucleation rate is proportional to the square of the steady state density.
For unpaired nucleation, and for paired nucleation at sufficiently large
initial separation, the nucleation rate is proportional to the cube of the
steady state density
Effect of Noise on Excursions To and Back From Infinity
The effect of additive white noise on a model for bursting behavior in large
aspect-ratio binary fluid convection is considered. Such bursts are present in
systems with nearly square symmetry and are the result of heteroclinic cycles
involving infinite amplitude states created when the square symmetry is broken.
A combination of numerical results and analytical arguments show how even a
very small amount of noise can have a very large effect on the amplitudes of
successive bursts. Large enough noise can also affect the physical
manifestations of the bursts. Finally, it is shown that related bursts may
occur when white noise is added to the normal form equations for the Hopf
bifurcation with exact square symmetry.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figure
