    MuLan: Towards a 1ppm muon lifetime measurement

    Casual Mediation Analyses with Structural Mean Models

    We represent a linear structural mean model (SMM)approach for analyzing mediation of a randomized baseline intervention\u27s effect on a univariate follow-up outcome. Unlike standard mediation analyses, our approach does not assume that the mediating factor is randomly assigned to individuals (i.e., sequential ignorability). Hence, a comparison of the results of the proposed and standard approaches in with respect to mediation offers a sensitivity analyses of the sequential ignorability assumption. The G-estimation procedure for the proposed SMM represents an extension of the work on direct effects of randomized treatment effects for survival outcomes by Robins and Greenland (1994) (Section 5.0 and Appendix B) and on treatment non-adherence for continuous outcomes by TenHave et al. (2004). Simulations show good estimation and confidence interval performance under unmeasured confounding relative mediation approach. Sensitivity analyses of the sequential ignorability assumption comparing the results of the two approaches are presented in the context of two suicide/depression treatment studies

    Tomographic inversion for sediment parameters in shallow water

    This article discusses inversions for bottom geoacoustic properties using broadband acoustic signals obtained from explosive sources. The experimental data used for the inversions are SUS charge explosions acquired on a vertical hydrophone array during the Shelf Break Primer Experiment conducted south of New England in the Middle Atlantic Bight in August 1996. The SUS signals were analyzed for their time-frequency behavior using wavelets. The group speed dispersion curves were obtained from the wavelet scalogram of the SUS signals. A genetic algorithm (GA) was used for the inversion of sound speeds in the water column and compressional wave speeds in the sediment layers. The variations in the sound speeds in the water column were represented using empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs). A range-independent normal mode routine was used to construct the replica fields corresponding to the parameters. Comparison of group speeds for modes 1 to 9 and for a range of frequencies 8 to 200 Hz was used to arrive at the best parameter fit. An efficient hybrid optimization scheme using the GA and a Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm is presented. Linear perturbation methods were also used to “fine tune” the inversions and to obtain resolution and variance estimates. Analysis was also done to compute the degree of convergence of each of the parameters by explicitly calculating the Hessian matrices numerically. A posteriori estimation of mean and covariance was also done to obtain error estimates. Group speeds for the inverted sound speed fields provide an excellent match to the experimental data. The inverted sediment compressional speed profile compares well with in situ measurements

    Variation in Grazing Sward Chicory Content After Periods of Low Rainfall

    Multispecies (MS) swards can reduce chemical nitrogen (N) fertiliser requirement due to the legume components of the sward mixtures, and have the potential to increase drought tolerance, particularly where chicory (CH, Chicorium intybus L.) is included in the sward mixture. A grazed plot experiment was established to investigate the persistency of forage herb species in MS swards under typical Irish grazing conditions. The swards contained three plant functional groups: grass, legume and herb; four sward types were established which included sward mixtures of the following species: perennial ryegrass (PRG, Lolium perenne L.) white clover (WC, Trifolium repens L.), red clover (RC, Trifolium pratense L.), CH and ribwort plantain (PL, Plantago lanceolata L.). The sward content of the various species in the sown mixtures was evaluated over three years (2020, 2021 and 2022). The summer of 2022 experienced dry weather conditions in which rainfall was well below average thus providing an opportunity to assess the drought tolerance of CH in grazed swards. The proportion of sward CH content from two late season cuts was assessed over the three years and this study reports the changes in sward CH content between years and grazing rotations. Average sward CH content was 14.7, 6.1, and 1.5% across all sward types in late summer of 2020, 2021 and 2022, respectively; average sward CH content was 13.7, 9.4 and 24.6 across all sward types in autumn of 2020, 2021 and 2022, respectively
