    Post-agrarian aspirations: tourism and rural politics in Ecuador

    This ethnographic study examines post-agrarian aspirations and rural politics in Ecuador. After decades of urban outmigration under a neoliberal agrarian order, many rural places have witnessed efforts to develop local tourism economies as a possibility to transcend stigmatised agrarian livelihoods and to (re)constitute communities. We build on anthropological studies of aspiration to explore how visions of post-agrarian futures are shifting the actors, scales and terms of rural politics in the present. Through two case studies, we observe how state actors have come to re-inscribe their role within post-agrarian imaginaries, partially rewriting the terms of state legitimacy in rural places

    In the title compound, C7H14N6, the amine groups of the two methyl­hydrazino substituents are orientated in the opposite direction to the methyl substituent at the 2-position of the pyrimidine ring. The mol­ecule is almost planar with only the two amine N atoms lying substanti­ally out of the mean plane of the pyrimidine ring [by 0.1430 (2) and 0.3092 (2) Å]. The H atoms on these amine groups point inwards towards the aromatic ring, such that the lone pair of electrons points outwards from the mol­ecule. Each mol­ecule is linked to two others through N—H⋯N hydrogen bonds between the two amino groups, forming a one-dimensional chain in the [010] direction. Offset face-to-face π–π stacking inter­actions between the pyrimidine rings organize these chains into a two-dimensional array [centroid–centroid distance = 3.789 (2) Å]

    Comparing plasma and faecal measures of steroid hormones in Adelie penguins Pygoscelis adeliae

    Physiological measurements of both stress and sex hormones are often used to estimate the consequences of natural or human-induced change in ecological studies of various animals. Different methods of hormone measurement exist, potentially explaining variation in results across studies; methods should be cross-validated to ensure that they correlate. We directly compared faecal and plasma hormone measurements for the first time in a wild free-living species, the Adelie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae). Blood and faecal samples were simultaneously collected from individual penguins for comparison and assayed for testosterone and corticosterone (or their metabolites). Sex differences and variability within each measure, and correlation of values across measures were compared. For both hormones, plasma samples showed greater variation than faecal samples. Males had higher mean corticosterone concentrations than females, but the difference was only statistically significant in faecal samples. Plasma testosterone, but not faecal testosterone, was significantly higher in males than females. Correlation between sample types was poor overall, and weaker in females than in males, perhaps because measures from plasma represent hormones that are both free and bound to globulins, whereas measures from faeces represent only the free portion. Faecal samples also represent a cumulative measure of hormones over time, as opposed to a plasma ‘snapshot’ concentration. Our data indicate that faecal sampling appears more suitable for assessing baseline hormone concentrations, whilst plasma sampling may best define immediate responses to environmental events. Consequently, future studies should ensure that they select the most appropriate matrix and method of hormone measurement to answer their research questions

    A structural and catalytic model for zinc phosphoesterases

    A structural model for the active site of phosphoesterases, enzymes that degrade organophosphate neurotoxins, has been synthesised. The ligand 2-((2-hydroxy-3-(((2-hydroxyethyl)(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)methyl)-5-methylbenzyl)(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)acetic acid (H(3)L1) and two Zn(ii) complexes have been prepared and characterised as and The ligand (H(3)L1) and complex were characterised through (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR, mass spectroscopy and microanalysis. The X-ray crystal structure of revealed a tetramer of dinuclear complexes, bridged by two phosphate molecules and bifurcating acetic acid arms. Functional studies of the zinc complex with the substrate bis(4-nitrophenyl)phosphate (bNPP) determined the complex with HL1(2-) to be a competent catalyst with k(cat) = 1.26 0.06 x 10(-6) s(-1)

    World radiocommunication conference 12 : implications for the spectrum eco-system

    Spectrum allocation is once more a key issue facing the global telecommunications industry. Largely overlooked in current debates, however, is the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC). Decisions taken by WRC shape the future roadmap of the telecommunications industry, not least because it has the ability to shape the global spectrum allocation framework. In the debates of WRC-12 it is possible to identify three main issues: enhancement of the international spectrum regulatory framework, regulatory measures required to introduce Cognitive Radio Systems (CRS) technologies; and, additional spectrum allocation to mobile service. WRC-12 eventually decided not to change the current international radio regulations with regard to the first two issues and agreed to the third issue. The main implications of WRC-12 on the spectrum ecosystem are that most of actors are not in support of the concept of spectrum flexibility associated with trading and that the concept of spectrum open access is not under consideration. This is explained by the observation that spectrum trading and spectrum commons weaken state control over spectrum and challenge the main principles and norms of the international spectrum management regime. In addition, the mobile allocation issue has shown the lack of conformity with the main rules of the regime: regional spectrum allocation in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) three regions, and the resistance to the slow decision making procedures. In conclusion, while the rules and decision-making procedures of the international spectrum management regime were challenged in the WRC-12, the main principles and norms are still accepted by the majority of countries

    Loss of Tet1 associated 5-hydroxymethylcytosine is concomitant with aberrant promoter hypermethylation in liver cancer

    Aberrant hypermethylation of CpG islands (CGI) in human tumors occurs predominantly at repressed genes in the host tissue, but the preceding events driving this phenomenon are poorly understood. In this study, we temporally tracked epigenetic and transcriptomic perturbations which occur in a mouse model of liver carcinogenesis. Hypermethylated CGI events in the model were predicted by enrichment of the DNA modification 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) and the histone H3 modification H3K27me3 at silenced promoters in the host tissue. During cancer progression, CGI underwent hypo-hydroxymethylation prior to hypermethylation, whilst retaining H3K27me3. In livers from mice deficient in Tet1, a tumor suppressor involved in cytosine demethylation, we observed a similar loss of promoter core 5hmC, suggesting that reduced Tet1 activity at CGI may contribute to epigenetic dysregulation observed during hepatocarcinogenesis. Consistent with this possibility, mouse liver tumors exhibited reduced Tet1 protein levels. Similar to humans, DNA methylation changes at CGI in mice did not appear to be direct drivers of hepatocellular carcinoma progression, rather, dynamic changes in H3K27me3 promoter deposition correlated strongly with tumor-specific activation and repression of transcription. Overall, our results suggest that loss of promoter-associated 5hmC in liver tumors licenses reprogramming of DNA methylation at silent CGI during progression
