Capacity for Half-Duplex Line Networks with Two Sources

The focus is on noise-free half-duplex line networks with two sources where the first node and either the second node or the second-last node in the cascade act as sources. In both cases, we establish the capacity region of rates at which both sources can transmit independent information to a common sink. Do entry barriers, perceived by SMEs, affect real antry? Some evidence from the Netherlands

The objective of this paper is to analyse the relationship between perceived entry barriers and real entry. Real entry rates are interpreted as an indicator for the dynamics in an industry. The major hypothesis of this paper is that important entry barriers restrict new entry. Real entry rates are provided by a starter ratio for different industrial sectors and provinces in the Netherlands.

Towards automation of user interface design

This paper suggests an approach to automatic software design in the domain of graphical user interfaces. There are still some drawbacks in existing user interface management systems (UIMS's) which basically offer only quantitative layout specifications via direct manipulation. Our approach suggests a convenient way to get a default graphical user interface which may be customized and redesigned easily in further prototyping cycles

Das gesamtwirtschaftliche Stellenangebot : Umfrage, Struktur und Besetzungsprobleme

In dem Beitrag werden Ergebnisse zweier repräsentativer Betriebsbefragungen über Ausmaß, Struktur und Entwicklung des gesamtwirtschaftlichen Stellenangebots, Einschaltung der Arbeitsämter sowie über Probleme und betriebliche Reaktionen im Falle nicht besetzbarer Stellen vorgelegt. Nach den Befragungen, an denen sich jeweils ca. 5000 Betriebe beteiligt haben, gab es im Herbst 1989 890.000 und Anfang 1990 870.000 sofort oder später zu besetzende offene Stellen. Rund 86% des aktuellen Personalbedarfs entfallen auf Klein- und Mittelbetriebe bis 200 Beschäftigte. Dem Arbeitsamt sind rund 40% der Vakanzen gemeldet. Bei Stellen, deren Besetzung Schwierigkeiten bereitet, wird das Arbeitsamt verstärkter eingeschaltet. Insgesamt konnten die Betriebe ihre Nachfragepotentiale weitgehend ausschöpfen und in relativ kurzer Zeit beachtliche Beschäftigungssteigerungen realisieren. "Einen Verzicht auf mögliche zusätzliche Produktion gab eine relativ kleine Gruppe von Betrieben an. Betriebe, die über 'Behinderungen ihrer Aktivitäten wegen Arbeitskräftemangel' berichteten, repräsentieren 12% aller Erwerbstätigen. Betriebe, die Mitarbeiter eingestellt hatten, berichteten im Herbst, daß es in 39% dieser Fälle Schwierigkeiten gegeben habe. Der Rückgang dieses Anteils auf 29% bei der Befragung Anfang des Jahres 1990 dürfte zumindest zum Teil saisonal bedingt sein und vielleicht auch die leichten Entspannungstendenzen widerspiegeln, die sich zu Beginn dieses Jahres auf dem Arbeitsmarkt zeigten." Employing trapped cold ions to verify the quantum Jarzynski equality

We propose a scheme to investigate the nonequilibrium work distribution of a quantum particle under well controlled transformations of the external potential, exploiting the versatility of a single ion in a segmented linear Paul trap. We describe in detail how the motional quantum state of a single ion can be prepared, manipulated and finally read out to fully determine the free energy difference in both harmonic and anharmonic potentials. Uniquely to our system, we show how an ion may be immersed in an engineered laser--field reservoir. Trapped ions therefore represent an ideal tool for investigating the Jarzynski equality in open and closed quantum systems.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let
