Cadmium, Lead, and Mercury in Relation to Reproductive Hormones and Anovulation in Premenopausal Women
Background: Metals can interfere with hormonal functioning by binding at the receptor site and through indirect mechanisms; thus, they may be associated with hormonal changes in premenopausal women
Physical activity, dietary habits and plasma lipoproteins in young men and women
W badaniach wzięły udział 202 osoby - 54 studentki i 53 studentów Akademii
Wychowania Fizycznego oraz 46 studentek i 49 studentów uniwersytetu. Spożycie energii, białka, tłuszczów i węglowodanów
oszacowano wykorzystując program komputerowy FOOD 2. Stężenia TG, TC oraz HDL-C oznaczono metodami kolorymetrycznymi
z zastosowaniem gotowych zestawów firmy Randox (Wielka Brytania). Wysoka aktywność fizyczna młodych
kobiet niekorzystnie wpływa na profil lipidowy, charakteryzujący się wyższym stężeniem cholesterolu całkowitego i frakcji
LDL-cholesterolu w porównaniu z kobietami o niskiej aktywności fizycznej i mężczyznami o wysokiej aktywności fizycznej.
Średnie spożycie energii w dziennych racjach pokarmowych mężczyzn i kobiet o wysokiej aktywności fizycznej
pokrywało odpowiednio 82% i 72,2% zalecanego spożycia.
stosunku do zapotrzebowania spożycie energii w dziennych racjach pokarmowych odgrywają istotną rolę w występowaniu
nieprawidłowego profilu lipidowego. There are studies suggesting that in young women strenuous physical activity and inadequate daily energy intake cause
unfavorable changes in lipoprotein profile. However, until know data concerning this issue are contradictory, possibly due to
small number of participants. This study aimed at evaluation of lipoprotein profile in young men and women with different
weekly physical activity together with their dietary habits. A total of 202 subjects volunteered to participate of the study – 54
female and 56 male students of physical education and 46 female and 49 male students representing other specialization.
Daily energy and macronutrient intakes were assessed using FOOD 2 computer program. Plasma TG, TC and HDL-C were
assayed colorimetically using Randox commercial kits (Great Britain). It has been demonstrated that high physical activity
adversely affects lipoprotein profile in young women characterized by higher TC and LDL-C in comparison with women with
low physical activity and with men with high physical activity. The effect of high physical activity on plasma lipoproteins
is equivocal. Active men are characterized by higher HDL, but also by higher frequency of unfavorable plasma TC and
similar frequency of unfavorable plasma LDL-C C as compared with their less active counterparts. The mean daily energy
intake in highly active men and women covered 82% and 72.2% recommended intake, respectively. It seems feasible that in
both sexes high physical activity and inadequate energy intake brings about unfavorable changes in plasma lipoproteins
Differences in eating patterns of middle school students living in urban and rural areas located in the Masovian Voivodeship
Background. Proper eating behaviours among youth condition their bodies’ optimal growth and development and impact
future diet choices, which affects maintenance of health in later years. Studies concerning assessment of the way of eating
among adolescents in Poland over the past years indicate a number of errors.
Objective. The aim of these studies was to asses diet diversity of middle school students, living in urban and rural areas
located in the Masovian Voivodeship.
Material and methods. 180 people participated in this study, 90 girls and 90 boys in age between 13 and 15 years. They
were middle school students, living in urban and rural areas of Mazowieckie Voivodeship. Assessment of the variety of
eating pattern amongst participants were conducted using the Food Intake Diversification Questionnaire (FIVeQ).
Results. It was found that 3.3% of respondents from rural areas and 10% of respondents from urban areas were characterized
by inappropriate variation of food intake. Sufficient variation of food consumption was found among 35.5% respondents
from rural areas and 36.6% from urban areas. Good variation of food consumption was demonstrated in 54.4% of subjects
from rural areas and in 42.2% from urban areas. Very good variation of food consumption was found in 6,6% of subjects
from rural areas and 11.1% from urban areas. It is worth noticing differences in diet variations observed in these studies. It
was shown that diet variety at inadequate, good and very good level was significantly different between groups, which may
be puzzling considering the fact that all subjects were living in the same Voivodeship.
Conclusion. For reason being, results obtained in these studies indicate the need for education of young people on principles
of balanced way of eating.Wprowadzenie. Prawidłowe zachowania żywieniowe młodzieży warunkują optymalny wzrost i rozwój organizmu,
Materiał i metody.
diety zaobserwowane w niniejszych badaniach.
Wnioski. Wyniki uzyskane w niniejszych badaniach wskazują, na potrzebę edukowania młodzieży w kwestii zasad
racjonalnego sposobu żywienia
Plasma homocysteine level and selected dietary habits in young healthy men
program komputerowy FOOD 2.
tłuszczów i węglowodanów.
Elevated plasma homocysteine level is recognized as independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Homocysteine
metabolism in the body is precisely regulated by many factors including dietary habits as folic acid, vitamin
B6 and B12 daily intakes. Data concerning the relationship between methionine daily intake and plasma homocysteine concentrations
are contradictory indicating increased or decreased plasma homocysteine levels in response to high protein
or high methionine daily intakes. This study aimed at the evaluation of the relationship between habitual dietary habits of
young, healthy men and plasma homocysteine levels. A total of 65 healthy students volunteered to participate in the study.
Their dietary habits were assessed from 4 dietary records concerning daily food intake during two week days and weekend.
Macronutrient, methionine and vitamin B6 intakes were calculated using FOOD 2 computer program purchased from
Institute of Food and Nutrition in Warsaw. Blood was drawn from antecubital vein after overnight fast. Plasma homocysteine
concentration was determined by fluorescence polarization immunoassay using commercial kits from Abbott (USA). It
has been demonstrated that plasma homocysteine levels were significantly and inversely correlated with daily total protein
intake (r = -0,372, p=0,003) and to lesser extent with methionine nutritional density (r=-0,319, p=0,02). There were no
correlation between daily vitamin B6 intake and plasma homocysteine concentration. Assuming our results it could be postulated
that habitual daily intake of protein and consequently methionine has a beneficial effect on plasma homocysteine
levels in young healthy men. In addition, it seems feasible that protein effect on plasma homocysteine is due to methionine
and protein-originated vitamins action
The effects of an increasing versus constant crank rate on peak physiological responses during incremental arm crank ergometry
We examined the effects of concomitant increases in crank rate and power output on incremental arm crank ergometry. Ten healthy males undertook three incremental upper body exercise tests to volitional exhaustion. The first test determined peak minute power. The subsequent tests involved arm cranking at an initial workload of 40% peak minute power with further increases of 10% peak minute power every 2 min. One involved a constant crank rate of 70 rev · min(-1), the other an initial crank rate of 50 rev · min(-1) increasing by 10 rev · min(-1) every 2 min. Fingertip capillary blood samples were analysed for blood lactate at rest and exhaustion. Local (working muscles) and cardiorespiratory ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded at the end of each exercise stage. Heart rate and expired gas were monitored continuously. No differences were observed in peak physiological responses or peak minute power achieved during either protocol. Blood lactate concentration tended to be greater for the constant crank rate protocol (P = 0.06). Test duration was shorter for the increasing than for the constant crank rate protocol. The relationship between local RPE and heart rate differed between tests. The results of this study show that increasing cadence during incremental arm crank ergometry provides a valid assessment of peak responses over a shorter duration but alters the heart rate-local RPE relationship.Peer reviewe
