    NVV auger spectra from W(100)

    Get PDF
The NVV Auger spectrum from a clean W(100) surface has been measured in the second derivative, d^2N (E)/dE^2, mode to enhance fine structure. This measurement is compared with spectra generated from both the self‐convolution of the tungsten valence‐band bulk density of states (obtained from a relativistic APW energy band calculation) and a "restricted convolution" in which only transitions involving electrons from the same valence energy are allowed. The restricted convolution for a model of the Auger process in which both N_6VV and N_7VV transitions contribute offers the best match of theory and experiment. No distinct evidence of Auger emission involving the surface resonance present on W(100) is observed. Effects of H_2 and O_2 adsorption on the Auger spectrum of the W(100) surface are reported

Developments and new applications of numerical stochastic perturbation theory

    Get PDF
A review of new developments in numerical stochastic perturbation theory (NSPT) is presented. In particular, the status of the extension of the method to gauge fixed lattice QCD is reviewed and a first application to compact (scalar) QED is presented. Lacking still a general proof of the convergence of the underlying stochastic processes, a self-consistent method for testing the results is discussed.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure. Energy resolution of alpha particles in a microbulk Micromegas detector at high pressure Argon and Xenon mixtures

The latest Micromesh Gas Amplification Structures (Micromegas) are achieving outstanding energy resolution for low energy photons, with values as low as 11% FWHM for the 5.9 keV line of 55^{55}Fe in argon/isobutane mixtures at atmospheric pressure. At higher energies (MeV scale), these measurements are more complicated due to the difficulty in confining the events in the chamber, although there is no fundamental reason why resolutions of 1% FWHM or below could not be reached. There is much motivation to demonstrate experimentally this fact in Xe mixtures due to the possible application of Micromegas readouts to the Double Beta Decay search of 136^{136}Xe, or in other experiments needing calorimetry and topology in the same detector. In this paper, we report on systematic measurements of energy resolution with state-of-the-art Micromegas using a 5.5 MeV alpha source in high pressure Ar/isobutane mixtures. Values as low as 1.8% FWHM have been obtained, with possible evidence that better resolutions are achievable. Similar measurements in Xe, of which a preliminary result is also shown here, are under progress.Comment: 16 pages, 19 figures, version after referees comments. The Nuclear Yukawa Model on a Lattice

We present the results of the quantum field theory approach to nuclear Yukawa model obtained by standard lattice techniques. We have considered the simplest case of two identical fermions interacting via a scalar meson exchange. Calculations have been performed using Wilson fermions in the quenched approximation. We found the existence of a critical coupling constant above which the model cannot be numerically solved. The range of the accessible coupling constants is below the threshold value for producing two-body bound states. Two-body scattering lengths have been obtained and compared to the non relativistic results.Comment: 15 page

Low temperature spin diffusion in the one-dimensional quantum O(3)O(3) nonlinear σ\sigma-model

An effective, low temperature, classical model for spin transport in the one-dimensional, gapped, quantum O(3)O(3) non-linear σ\sigma-model is developed. Its correlators are obtained by a mapping to a model solved earlier by Jepsen. We obtain universal functions for the ballistic-to-diffusive crossover and the value of the spin diffusion constant, and these are claimed to be exact at low temperatures. Implications for experiments on one-dimensional insulators with a spin gap are noted.Comment: 4 pages including 3 eps-figures, Revte

Prompt Quark Production by exploding Sphalerons

Following recent works on production and subsequent explosive decay of QCD sphaleron-like clusters, we discuss the mechanism of quark pair production in this process. We first show how the gauge field explosive solution of Luscher and Schechter can be achieved by non-central conformal mapping from the O(4)-symmetric solution. Our main result is a new solution to the Dirac equation in real time in this configuration, obtained by the same inversion of the fermion O(4) zero mode. It explicitly shows how the quark acceleration occurs, starting from the spherically O(3) symmetric zero energy chiral quark state to the final spectrum of non-zero energies. The sphaleron-like clusters with any Chern-Simons number always produce NFLˉR{\rm N_F} {\bar {\bf L}}{\bf R} quarks, and the antisphaleron-like clusters the chirality opposite. The result are relevant for hadron-hadron and nucleus-nucleus collisions at large s\sqrt{s}, wherein such clusters can be produced

Spin dynamics and transport in gapped one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnets at nonzero temperatures

We present the theory of nonzero temperature (TT) spin dynamics and transport in one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnets with an energy gap Δ\Delta. For T<<ΔT << \Delta, we develop a semiclassical picture of thermally excited particles. Multiple inelastic collisions between the particles are crucial, and are described by a two-particle S-matrix which has a super-universal form at low momenta. This is established by computations on the O(3) σ\sigma-model, and strong and weak coupling expansions (the latter using a Majorana fermion representation) for the two-leg S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladder. As an aside, we note that the strong-coupling calculation reveals a S=1, two particle bound state which leads to the presence of a second peak in the T=0 inelastic neutron scattering (INS) cross-section for a range of values of momentum transfer. We obtain exact, or numerically exact, universal expressions for the thermal broadening of the quasi-particle peak in the INS cross-section, for the magnetization transport, and for the field dependence of the NMR relaxation rate 1/T11/T_1 of the effective semiclassical model: these are expected to be asymptotically exact for the quantum antiferromagnets. The results for 1/T11/T_1 are compared with the experimental findings of Takigawa et al and the agreement is quite good. In the regime Δ<T<(atypicalmicroscopicexchange)\Delta < T < (a typical microscopic exchange) we argue that a complementary description in terms of semiclassical waves applies, and give some exact results for the thermodynamics and dynamics.Comment: REVTEX, 53 pages and 23 postscript figures; added additional reference and associated clarificatio

Chirality Correlation within Dirac Eigenvectors from Domain Wall Fermions

In the dilute instanton gas model of the QCD vacuum, one expects a strong spatial correlation between chirality and the maxima of the Dirac eigenvectors with small eigenvalues. Following Horvath, {\it et al.} we examine this question using lattice gauge theory within the quenched approximation. We extend the work of those authors by using weaker coupling, β=6.0\beta=6.0, larger lattices, 16416^4, and an improved fermion formulation, domain wall fermions. In contrast with this earlier work, we find a striking correlation between the magnitude of the chirality density, ψ(x)γ5ψ(x)|\psi^\dagger(x)\gamma^5\psi(x)|, and the normal density, ψ(x)ψ(x)\psi^\dagger(x)\psi(x), for the low-lying Dirac eigenvectors.Comment: latex, 25 pages including 12 eps figure

Gauge Theories on a 2+2 Anisotropic Lattice

    Get PDF
The implementation of gauge theories on a four-dimensional anisotropic lattice with two distinct lattice spacings is discussed, with special attention to the case where two axes are finely and two axes are coarsely discretized. Feynman rules for the Wilson gauge action are derived and the renormalizability of the theory and the recovery of the continuum limit are analyzed. The calculation of the gluon propagator and the restoration of Lorentz invariance in on-shell states is presented to one-loop order in lattice perturbation theory for SU(Nc)SU(N_c) on both 2+2 and 3+1 lattices.Comment: 27 pages, uses feynmf.
