Quenching Effects in the Hadron Spectrum
Lattice QCD has generated a wealth of data in hadronic physics over the last
two decades. Until relatively recently, most of this information has been
within the "quenched approximation" where virtual quark--anti-quark pairs are
neglected. This review presents a descriptive discussion of the effects of
removing this approximation in the calculation of hadronic masses.Comment: To appear in "Lattice Hadron Physics", ed. A.C. Kalloniatis, D.B.

Non-monotonic current-to-rate response function in a novel integrate-and-fire model neuron
A novel integrate-and-fire model neuron is proposed to account for a non-monotonic f-I response function, as experimentally observed. As opposed to classical forms of adaptation, the present integrate- and-fire model the spike-emission process incorporates a state - dependent inactivation that makes the probability of emitting a spike decreasing as a function of the mean depolarization level instead of the mean firing rate. \ua9 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002
Hadron Masses From Novel Fat-Link Fermion Actions
The hadron mass spectrum is calculated in lattice QCD using a novel fat-link
clover fermion action in which only the irrelevant operators in the fermion
action are constructed using smeared links. The simulations are performed on a
16^3 x 32 lattice with a lattice spacing of a=0.125 fm. We compare actions with
n=4 and 12 smearing sweeps with a smearing fraction of 0.7. The n=4 Fat-Link
Irrelevant Clover (FLIC) action provides scaling which is superior to
mean-field improvement, and offers advantages over nonperturbative 0(a)
improvement, including a reduced exceptional configuration problem.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, new simulation with mean-field improved clover,

Unquenched Charmonium with NRQCD - Lattice 2000
We present results from a series of NRQCD simulations of the charmonium
system, both in the quenched approximation and with n_f = 2 dynamical quarks.
The spectra show evidence for quenching effects of ~10% in the S- and
P-hyperfine splittings. We compare this with other systematic effects.
Improving the NRQCD evolution equation altered the S-hyperfine by as much as 20
MeV, and we estimate radiative corrections may be as large as 40%.Comment: Lattice 2000 (Heavy Quark Physics
Constants of motion for vacuum general relativity
The 3+1 Hamiltonian Einstein equations, reduced by imposing two commuting
spacelike Killing vector fields, may be written as the equations of the
principal chiral model with certain `source' terms. Using this
formulation, we give a procedure for generating an infinite number of non-local
constants of motion for this sector of the Einstein equations. The constants of
motion arise as explicit functionals on the phase space of Einstein gravity,
and are labelled by sl(2,R) indices.Comment: 10 pages, latex, version to appear in Phys. Rev. D
Hadron Properties with FLIC Fermions
The Fat-Link Irrelevant Clover (FLIC) fermion action provides a new form of
nonperturbative O(a)-improvement in lattice fermion actions offering near
continuum results at finite lattice spacing. It provides computationally
inexpensive access to the light quark mass regime of QCD where chiral
nonanalytic behaviour associated with Goldstone bosons is revealed. The
motivation and formulation of FLIC fermions, its excellent scaling properties
and its low-lying hadron mass phenomenology are presented.Comment: 29 pages, 13 figures, 6 tables. Contribution to lecure notes in 2nd

Towards an Asymptotic-Safety Scenario for Chiral Yukawa Systems
We search for asymptotic safety in a Yukawa system with a chiral
symmetry, serving as a toy model for the
standard-model Higgs sector. Using the functional RG as a nonperturbative tool,
the leading-order derivative expansion exhibits admissible non-Ga\ssian
fixed-points for which arise from a conformal threshold
behavior induced by self-balanced boson-fermion fluctuations. If present in the
full theory, the fixed-point would solve the triviality problem. Moreover, as
one fixed point has only one relevant direction even with a reduced hierarchy
problem, the Higgs mass as well as the top mass are a prediction of the theory
in terms of the Higgs vacuum expectation value. In our toy model, the fixed
point is destabilized at higher order due to massless Goldstone and fermion
fluctuations, which are particular to our model and have no analogue in the
standard model.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure
The Nuclear Yukawa Model on a Lattice
We present the results of the quantum field theory approach to nuclear Yukawa
model obtained by standard lattice techniques. We have considered the simplest
case of two identical fermions interacting via a scalar meson exchange.
Calculations have been performed using Wilson fermions in the quenched
approximation. We found the existence of a critical coupling constant above
which the model cannot be numerically solved. The range of the accessible
coupling constants is below the threshold value for producing two-body bound
states. Two-body scattering lengths have been obtained and compared to the non
relativistic results.Comment: 15 page
The staggered domain wall fermion method
A different lattice fermion method is introduced. Staggered domain wall
fermions are defined in 2n+1 dimensions and describe 2^n flavors of light
lattice fermions with exact U(1) x U(1) chiral symmetry in 2n dimensions. As
the size of the extra dimension becomes large, 2^n chiral flavors with the same
chiral charge are expected to be localized on each boundary and the full
SU(2^n) x SU(2^n) flavor chiral symmetry is expected to be recovered. SDWF give
a different perspective into the inherent flavor mixing of lattice fermions and
by design present an advantage for numerical simulations of lattice QCD
thermodynamics. The chiral and topological index properties of the SDWF Dirac
operator are investigated. And, there is a surprise ending...Comment: revtex4, 7 figures, minor revisions, 2 references adde
Effects of non-perturbatively improved dynamical fermions in QCD at fixed lattice spacing
We present results for the static inter-quark potential, lightest glueballs,
light hadron spectrum and topological susceptibility using a non-perturbatively
improved action on a lattice at a set of values of the bare
gauge coupling and bare dynamical quark mass chosen to keep the lattice size
fixed in physical units ( fm). By comparing these measurements with a
matched quenched ensemble, we study the effects due to two degenerate flavours
of dynamical quarks. With the greater control over residual lattice spacing
effects which these methods afford, we find some evidence of charge screening
and some minor effects on the light hadron spectrum over the range of quark
masses studied (). More substantial differences between
quenched and unquenched simulations are observed in measurements of topological
quantities.Comment: 53 pages, LaTeX/RevTeX, 16 eps figures; corrected clover action
