    Bacterial Profile and Antibiotic Resistance in Patients with Diabetic Foot Ulcer in Guangzhou, Southern China: Focus on the Differences among Different Wagner’s Grades, IDSA/IWGDF Grades, and Ulcer Types

    Objective. To understand the bacterial profile and antibiotic resistance patterns in diabetic foot infection (DFI) in different Wagner’s grades, IDSA/IWGDF grades, and different ulcer types in Guangzhou, in order to provide more detailed suggestion to the clinician about the empirical antibiotic choice. Methods. 207 bacteria were collected from 117 DFIs in Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital from Jan.1, 2010, to Dec.31, 2015. The clinical data and microbial information were analyzed. Results. The proportion of Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) was higher than Gram-positive bacteria (GPB) (54.1% versus 45.9%), in which Enterobacteriaceae (73.2%) and Staphylococcus (65.2%) were predominant, respectively. With an increasing of Wagner’s grades and IDSA/IWGDF grades, the proportion of GNB bacterial infection, especially Pseudomonas, was increased. Neuro-ischemic ulcer (N-IFU) was more susceptible to GNB infection. Furthermore, with the aggravation of the wound and infection, the antibiotic resistance rates were obviously increased. GPB isolated in ischemic foot ulcer (IFU) showed more resistance than the N-IFU, while GNB isolates were on the opposite. Conclusions. Different bacterial profiles and antibiotic sensitivity were found in different DFU grades and types. Clinician should try to stay updated in antibiotic resistance pattern of common pathogens in their area. This paper provided them the detailed information in this region

    Experimental Study on the Adhesion Strength of the Frozen Ice for Aircraft Moving Parts

    At alpine regional airports, aircraft are covered with frozen ice when they encounter extreme weather such as heavy snow or frost. The movement parts of aircraft cabin doors, flaps and landing gear may be affected due to the infiltration of freezing ice, and the movement stagnation may occur when the the accumulation of ice is more serious. This paper sets up a mechanical performance test of frozen ice for this engineering problem to provide data that is beneficial to the selection of the mechanism drive and the determination of ice-breaking loads. The test is conducted based on the standard tensile shear test. In order to overcome problems such as the poor icing effect of the traditional specimen or the easy damage of the specimen ice, we improved the structure of the specimen and the method of the test. According to the characteristics of growth of frozen ice, we introduced freezing time, type of water quality and adhesion materials as test variables. The results show that: the ice adhesion strength of frozen ice increases and then decreases (−15 ∘C∼−55 ∘C). At the ambient temperature of −15 ∘C∼−55 ∘C and freezing for 2 h∼6 h, the ice adhesion strength of aluminum alloy surface ranges from 0.009 MPa to 0.568 MPa, and that of frozen ice on a silicone rubber surface is 0.005 MPa∼0.147 MPa. The duration of freezing did not significantly affect the adhesion strength of frozen ice. Among the three water qualities, the frozen ice from distilled water has the greatest adhesion strength, the lake water is the most medium, and the sea water is the smallest. The results of this test can be widely used in the determination of the ice-breaking load of civil aircraft, amphibious aircraft, ships, and the design of anti-ice/de-icing systems

    Heavy metals in blood and urine and its relation to depressive symptoms in Parkinson's disease patients

    Objectives Some heavy metals are suspected to be pathogenic to both Parkinson's disease (PD) and depression. Common background may exist in them. Methods Subjects comprised PD patients with depression, PD patients without depression and controls recruited from the outpatient clinic in China. Morning blood and urine samples were used to measure concentrations of metals and vitamins. Results Whole-blood manganese was significantly higher in the PD patients without depression than in both the PD patients with depression and the controls. Serum iron was significantly higher in the PD patients without depression than in the controls. Urine iron was also significantly higher in the PD patients without depression than in the controls. Serum copper was significantly lower in the PD patients with depression than in both the PD patients without depression and the controls. Conclusions Excessive intake of iron and accumulation of manganese seemed to be involved in the etiology of non-depressive PD

    Correlations among heavy metals in blood and urine and their relations to depressive symptoms in Parkinson's disease patients

    Objectives: From our previous results, manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) in the blood of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients without depression were higher than those of both the PD patients with depression and controls, the hypothesis that "two types of PD exist-PD without depression and affected by Mn and Fe, and PD with depression and unaffected by Mn or Fe" was induced. To investigate the hypothesis, correlations among blood and urine metals were compared in the subjects. Methods: Subjects comprised PD patients with depression, PD patients without depression and controls recruited from an outpatient clinic in China. Morning blood and urine samples were used to measure concentrations of metals. Results: In the controls, Mn, Fe and zinc (Zn) levels in blood strongly correlated with each other. The correlation coefficient between Mn and Zn in blood was significant in the PD patients with depression and the controls, but not in the PD patients without depression. Correlations of Fe between blood and urine in the PD patients without depression were significant, but not in the PD patients with depression and the controls. Conclusions: A common route of simultaneous intake of Mn, Fe and Zn could exist in our subjects, however in PD patients without depression, a large intake of Mn may have been from another route. Some results of the PD patients without depression were different from those of the PD patients with depression and the controls. Thus, two types of PD may exist
