An Efficient Multilevel Fast Multipole Algorithm to Solve Volume Integral Equation for Arbitrary Inhomogeneous Bi-Anisotropic Objects

    Get PDF
A volume integral equation (VIE) based on the mixed-potential representation is presented to analyze the electromagnetic scattering from objects involving inhomogeneous bi-anisotropic materials. By discretizing the objects using tetrahedrons on which the commonly used Schaubert-Wilton-Glisson (SWG) basis functions are defined, the matrix equation is derived using the method of moments (MoM) combined with the Galerkinā€™s testing. Further, adopting an integral strategy of tetrahedron-to-tetrahedron scheme, the multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) is proposed to accelerate the iterative solution, which is further improved by using the spherical harmonics expansion with a faster implementation and low memory requirement. The memory requirement of the radiation patterns of basis functions in the proposed MLFMA is several times less than that in the conventional MLFMA

Assessing and Enhancing Robustness of Deep Learning Models with Corruption Emulation in Digital Pathology

Deep learning in digital pathology brings intelligence and automation as substantial enhancements to pathological analysis, the gold standard of clinical diagnosis. However, multiple steps from tissue preparation to slide imaging introduce various image corruptions, making it difficult for deep neural network (DNN) models to achieve stable diagnostic results for clinical use. In order to assess and further enhance the robustness of the models, we analyze the physical causes of the full-stack corruptions throughout the pathological life-cycle and propose an Omni-Corruption Emulation (OmniCE) method to reproduce 21 types of corruptions quantified with 5-level severity. We then construct three OmniCE-corrupted benchmark datasets at both patch level and slide level and assess the robustness of popular DNNs in classification and segmentation tasks. Further, we explore to use the OmniCE-corrupted datasets as augmentation data for training and experiments to verify that the generalization ability of the models has been significantly enhanced

    Get PDF
Green building design refers to reducing the energy consumption of buildings through the use of energy-saving and environmentally-friendly technologies during the design and construction of buildings. The consumption of water resources and electric energy in office buildings is significantly higher than that of ordinary residential buildings, which has a greater impact on the environment during the construction process. Therefore, the use of green building design in the design of office buildings plays an important role in reducing building energy consumption. This article takes an office building in Chongqing as an example to explain the green optimization design and provide support for subsequent related constructions

Developing a digital archive system for imperial Chinese robe in the Qing Dynasty

The digital archive of cultural heritage provides new opportunities for the protection of the cultural heritage and the development of online museums. One of the essential requirements for the digitization is to achieve accurate color reproduction. Taking the Imperial Chinese robes in the Qing Dynasty as an example, this study aims to develop a digital achieve system to digitize the robes using a high-end imaging system and accurately reproduce their color properties on a display. Currently, there has been very limited study focused on the color reproduction of silk fabrics or other textile materials. The conventional color management process using a traditional color chart, however, may not be suitable for the reproduction of silk fabrics because they have very high gloss. To address this difficulty, a unique ā€œQianlong Paletteā€ color chart, consisting of 210 silk fabric samples, has been specifically produced for optimizing the color reproduction of silk fabrics and a color image reproduction system has been developed for the digitization and archiving of the clothing fabric for the royal court. Color characterization models using both the ā€œQianlong Paletteā€ color chart and the traditional color chart, and different mapping methods, are compared and the model with highest accuracy used in a self-programmed interface for automatically processing textile images in the future. Finally, the digital archive system has been validated using six garments of silk fabric relics. The color differences after the color image reproduction are all less than 3.00Ī”E*ab, indicating acceptable color reproduction of the system. The images after color reproduction have also been evaluated subjectively by experts from the museum and the results are considered satisfactory. Our results show that the newly designed ā€œQianlong Paletteā€ color chart exhibits superior performance over the conventional color chart in effectively predicting the color of the silk fabrics. The self-programmed graphical user interface for image color management can serve as a powerful tool to truly reproduce the color of various silk fabric relics in museums in the future and digitally archive those valuable cultural relics for different uses

PathNarratives: Data annotation for pathological human-AI collaborative diagnosis

Pathology is the gold standard of clinical diagnosis. Artificial intelligence (AI) in pathology becomes a new trend, but it is still not widely used due to the lack of necessary explanations for pathologists to understand the rationale. Clinic-compliant explanations besides the diagnostic decision of pathological images are essential for AI model training to provide diagnostic suggestions assisting pathologists practice. In this study, we propose a new annotation form, PathNarratives, that includes a hierarchical decision-to-reason data structure, a narrative annotation process, and a multimodal interactive annotation tool. Following PathNarratives, we recruited 8 pathologist annotators to build a colorectal pathological dataset, CR-PathNarratives, containing 174 whole-slide images (WSIs). We further experiment on the dataset with classification and captioning tasks to explore the clinical scenarios of human-AI-collaborative pathological diagnosis. The classification tasks show that fine-grain prediction enhances the overall classification accuracy from 79.56 to 85.26%. In Human-AI collaboration experience, the trust and confidence scores from 8 pathologists raised from 3.88 to 4.63 with providing more details. Results show that the classification and captioning tasks achieve better results with reason labels, provide explainable clues for doctors to understand and make the final decision and thus can support a better experience of human-AI collaboration in pathological diagnosis. In the future, we plan to optimize the tools for the annotation process, and expand the datasets with more WSIs and covering more pathological domains

A universal optical modulator for synthetic topologically tuneable structured matter

Topologically structured matter, such as metasurfaces and metamaterials, have given rise to impressive photonic functionality, fuelling diverse applications from microscopy and holography to encryption and communication. Presently these solutions are limited by their largely static nature and preset functionality, hindering applications that demand dynamic photonic systems with reconfigurable topologies. Here we demonstrate a universal optical modulator that implements topologically tuneable structured matter as virtual pixels derived from cascading low functionality tuneable devices, altering the paradigm of phase and amplitude control to encompass arbitrary spatially varying retarders in a synthetic structured matter device. Our approach opens unprecedented functionality that is user-defined with high flexibility, allowing our synthetic structured matter to act as an information carrier, beam generator, analyser, and corrector, opening an exciting path to tuneable topologies of light and matter

Acupuncture for Breast Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Patient-Reported Outcomes

AbstractThe present systematic review and meta-analysis was undertaken to evaluate the effects of acupuncture in women with breast cancer (BC), focusing on patient-reported outcomes (PROs).MethodsA comprehensive literature search was carried out for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting PROs in BC patients with treatment-related symptoms after undergoing acupuncture for at least four weeks. Literature screening, data extraction, and risk bias assessment were independently carried out by two researchers.ResultsOut of the 2, 524 identified studies, 29 studies representing 33 articles were included in this meta-analysis. At the end of treatment (EOT), the acupuncture patientsā€™ quality of life (QoL) was measured by the QLQ-C30 QoL subscale, the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Endocrine Symptoms (FACT-ES), the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapyā€“General/Breast (FACT-G/B), and the Menopause-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (MENQOL), which depicted a significant improvement. The use of acupuncture in BC patients lead to a considerable reduction in the scores of all subscales of the Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form (BPI-SF) and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) measuring pain. Moreover, patients treated with acupuncture were more likely to experience improvements in hot flashes scores, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and anxiety compared to those in the control group, while the improvements in depression were comparable across both groups. Long-term follow-up results were similar to the EOT results.ConclusionsCurrent evidence suggests that acupuncture might improve BC treatment-related symptoms measured with PROs including QoL, pain, fatigue, hot flashes, sleep disturbance and anxiety. However, a number of included studies report limited amounts of certain subgroup settings, thus more rigorous, well-designed and larger RCTs are needed to confirm our results
