    CsCl-type compounds in binary alloys of rare-earth metals with gold and silver

    In binary alloys of silver with Sm, Tb, Ho, and Tm, and of gold with Y, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and Tm, intermediate phases containing stoichiometric proportions of the two metals were found to crystallize into the CsCl (B2)-type structure. The lattice parameters of these phases are reported and a correlation has been found between these lattice parameters and the trivalent ionic radii of the rare-earth metals

    Data assimilation using bayesian filters and B-spline geological models

    This paper proposes a new approach to problems of data assimilation, also known as history matching, of oilfield production data by adjustment of the location and sharpness of patterns of geological facies. Traditionally, this problem has been addressed using gradient based approaches with a level set parameterization of the geology. Gradient-based methods are robust, but computationally demanding with real-world reservoir problems and insufficient for reservoir management uncertainty assessment. Recently, the ensemble filter approach has been used to tackle this problem because of its high efficiency from the standpoint of implementation, computational cost, and performance. Incorporation of level set parameterization in this approach could further deal with the lack of differentiability with respect to facies type, but its practical implementation is based on some assumptions that are not easily satisfied in real problems. In this work, we propose to describe the geometry of the permeability field using B-spline curves. This transforms history matching of the discrete facies type to the estimation of continuous B-spline control points. As filtering scheme, we use the ensemble square-root filter (EnSRF). The efficacy of the EnSRF with the B-spline parameterization is investigated through three numerical experiments, in which the reservoir contains a curved channel, a disconnected channel or a 2-dimensional closed feature. It is found that the application of the proposed method to the problem of adjusting facies edges to match production data is relatively straightforward and provides statistical estimates of the distribution of geological facies and of the state of the reservoir

    Integration of business intelligence based on three-level ontology services

    Usually, integration of business intelligence (BI) from realistic telecom enterprise is by packing data warehouse (DW), OLAP, data mining and reporting from different vendors together. As a result, BI system users are transferred to a reporting system with reports, data models, dimensions and measures predefined by system designers. As a result of survey, 85% of DW projects failed to meet their intended objectives. In this paper, we investigate how to integrate BI packages into an adaptive and flexible knowledge portal by constructing an internal link and communication channel from top-level business concepts to underlying enterprise information systems (EIS). An approach of three-level ontology services is developed, which implements unified naming, directory and transport of ontology services, and ontology mapping and query parsing among conceptual view, analytical view and physical view from user interfaces through DW to EIS. Experiments on top of real telecom EIS shows that our solution for integrating BI presents much stronger power to support operational decision making more user-friendly and adoptively compared with those simply combining BI products presently available together. © 2004 IEEE

    Shock wave loading and spallation of copper bicrystals with asymmetric Σ3〈110〉tilt grain boundaries

    We investigate the effect of asymmetric grain boundaries (GBs) on the shock response of Cu bicrystals with molecular dynamics simulations. We choose a representative Σ3〈110〉tilt GB type, (110)_1/(114)_2, and a grain size of about 15 nm. The shock loading directions lie on the GB plane and are along [001] and [221] for the two constituent crystals. The bicrystal is characterized in terms of local structure, shear strain, displacement, stress and temperature during shock compression, and subsequent release and tension. The shock response of the bicrystal manifests pronounced deviation from planar loading as well as strong stress and strain concentrations, due to GBs and the strong anisotropy in elasticity and plasticity. We explore incipient to full spallation. Voids nucleate either at GBs or on GB-initiated shear planes, and the spall damage also depends on grain orientation

    Hysteresis and Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in Antiferromagnetic Nd2xCexCuO4Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4}

    The out-of-plane resistivity (ρc\rho_c) and magnetoresistivity (MR) are studied in antiferromangetic (AF) Nd2xCexCuO4Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4} single crystals, which have three types of noncollinear antiferromangetic spin structures. The apparent signatures are observed in ρc(T)\rho_c(T) measured at the zero-field and 14 T at the spin structure transitions, giving a definite evidence for the itinerant electrons directly coupled to the localized spins. One of striking feature is an anisotropy of the MR with a fourfold symmetry upon rotating the external field (B) within ab plane in the different phases, while twofold symmetry at spin reorientation transition temperatures. The intriguing thermal hysteresis in ρc(T,B)\rho_c(T,B) and magnetic hysteresis in MR are observed at spin reorientation transition temperatures.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Superconductivity in sputtered CuMO6S8

    Samples were prepared by melting the metals, followed by annealing to various temperatures. The result was a structurally weak material. Sputtered films on sapphire substrates were prepared and studied. The substrates give the films mechanical strength and permit easy attachment of electrical leads. Materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, electrical resistance vs. temperature, and critical current measurements. Some of the results on CuMo6S8 are presented

    In-plane ferromagnetism in charge-ordering Na0.55CoO2Na_{0.55}CoO_2

    The magnetic and transport properties are systematically studied on the single crystal Na0.55CoO2Na_{0.55}CoO_2 with charge ordering and divergency in resistivity below 50 K. A long-range ferromagnetic ordering is observed in susceptibility below 20 K with the magnetic field parallel to Co-O plane, while a negligible behavior is observed with the field perpendicular to the Co-O plane. It definitely gives a direct evidence for the existence of in-plane ferromagnetism below 20 K. The observed magnetoresistance (MR) of 30 % at the field of 6 T at low temperatures indicates an unexpectedly strong spin-charge coupling in triangle lattice systems.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
