Rashba-Enhanced Plasmon in a Two-Dimensional Lateral Superlattice
The self-consistent density response of an electron system is studied in a two-dimensional ͑2D͒ lateral superlattice ͑SL͒ with spin-orbit interaction ͑SOI͒. Under the effect of the lateral periodic potential, the single-electron 2D states are broadened into minibands that are spin split by SOI. In the case of a single fully occupied miniband, we calculate the long-wavelength limit of the polarization function for intraband transi-tions, within the random-phase approximation at T=0 K, and identify the plasmonic dispersion relation in the effective-mass approximation. The interplay between band effects and SOI coupling, considered here to be linear in the electron momentum ͑Rashba͒, is shown to generate a highly anisotropic collective excitation spectrum. If the plasmon propagating perpendicular on the superlattice axis has the characteristic frequency of the quasi-one-dimensional system weakly modified by the SOI split, the one propagating along the SL axis is enhanced by the SOI that couples, through its dependence on the periodic momentum of a Bloch electron, density fluctuations in different layers of the superlattice. The excitation frequency of this mode is found to depend on the miniband width and the amplitude of the SOI coupling constant
XAX: a multi-ton, multi-target detection system for dark matter, double beta decay and pp solar neutrinos
A multi-target detection system XAX, comprising concentric 10 ton targets of
136Xe and 129/131Xe, together with a geometrically similar or larger target of
liquid Ar, is described. Each is configured as a two-phase
scintillation/ionization TPC detector, enhanced by a full 4pi array of
ultra-low radioactivity Quartz Photon Intensifying Detectors (QUPIDs) replacing
the conventional photomultipliers for detection of scintillation light. It is
shown that background levels in XAX can be reduced to the level required for
dark matter particle (WIMP) mass measurement at a 10^-10 pb WIMP-nucleon cross
section, with single-event sensitivity below 10^-11 pb. The use of multiple
target elements allows for confirmation of the A^2 dependence of a coherent
cross section, and the different Xe isotopes provide information on the
spin-dependence of the dark matter interaction. The event rates observed by Xe
and Ar would modulate annually with opposite phases from each other for WIMP
mass >~100 GeV/c^2. The large target mass of 136Xe and high degree of
background reduction allow neutrinoless double beta decay to be observed with
lifetimes of 10^27-10^28 years, corresponding to the Majorana neutrino mass
range 0.01-0.1 eV, the most likely range from observed neutrino mass
differences. The use of a 136Xe-depleted 129/131Xe target will also allow
measurement of the pp solar neutrino spectrum to a precision of 1-2%.Comment: 16 pages with 17 figure
Spanning trees on the Sierpinski gasket
We obtain the numbers of spanning trees on the Sierpinski gasket
with dimension equal to two, three and four. The general expression for the
number of spanning trees on with arbitrary is conjectured. The
numbers of spanning trees on the generalized Sierpinski gasket
with and are also obtained.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl
Dimer coverings on the Sierpinski gasket with possible vacancies on the outmost vertices
We present the number of dimers on the Sierpinski gasket
at stage with dimension equal to two, three, four or five, where one of
the outmost vertices is not covered when the number of vertices is an
odd number. The entropy of absorption of diatomic molecules per site, defined
as , is calculated to be
exactly for . The numbers of dimers on the generalized
Sierpinski gasket with and are also obtained
exactly. Their entropies are equal to , , ,
respectively. The upper and lower bounds for the entropy are derived in terms
of the results at a certain stage for with . As the
difference between these bounds converges quickly to zero as the calculated
stage increases, the numerical value of with can be
evaluated with more than a hundred significant figures accurate.Comment: 35 pages, 20 figures and 1 tabl
Yang's gravitational theory
Yang's pure space equations (C.N. Yang, Phys. Rev. Lett. v.33, p.445 (1974))
generalize Einstein's gravitational equations, while coming from gauge theory.
We study these equations from a number of vantage points: summarizing the work
done previously, comparing them with the Einstein equations and investigating
their properties. In particular, the initial value problem is discussed and a
number of results are presented for these equations with common energy-momentum
tensors.Comment: 28 pages, to appear in Gen. Rel. Gra
Correlated Strength in Nuclear Spectral Function
We have carried out an (e,e'p) experiment at high momentum transfer and in
parallel kinematics to measure the strength of the nuclear spectral function
S(k,E) at high nucleon momenta k and large removal energies E. This strength is
related to the presence of short-range and tensor correlations, and was known
hitherto only indirectly and with considerable uncertainty from the lack of
strength in the independent-particle region. This experiment confirms by direct
measurement the correlated strength predicted by theory.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted by Phys. Rev. Let
Measurement of the Proton's Neutral Weak Magnetic Form Factor
We report the first measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in elastic
electron scattering from the proton. The asymmetry depends on the neutral weak
magnetic form factor of the proton which contains new information on the
contribution of strange quark-antiquark pairs to the magnetic moment of the
proton. We obtain the value n.m. at
(GeV/c).Comment: 4 pages TEX, text available at

Nuclear transparency and effective kaon-nucleon cross section from the A(e, e'K+) reaction
We have determined the transparency of the nuclear medium to kaons from
measurements on C, Cu, and Au targets.
The measurements were performed at the Jefferson Laboratory and span a range in
four-momentum-transfer squared Q=1.1 -- 3.0 GeV. The nuclear
transparency was defined as the ratio of measured kaon electroproduction cross
sections with respect to deuterium, (). We further
extracted the atomic number () dependence of the transparency as
parametrized by and, within a simple model assumption,
the in-medium effective kaon-nucleon cross sections. The effective cross
sections extracted from the electroproduction data are found to be smaller than
the free cross sections determined from kaon-nucleon scattering experiments,
and the parameter was found to be significantly larger than those
obtained from kaon-nucleus scattering. We have included similar comparisons
between pion- and proton-nucleon effective cross sections as determined from
electron scattering experiments, and pion-nucleus and proton-nucleus scattering
data.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
