    Arc-Smooth Continua

    Continua admitting arc-structures and arc-smooth continua are introduced as higher dimensional analogues of dendroids and smooth dendroids, respectively. These continua include such spaces as: cones over compacta, convex continua in l2, strongly convex metric continua, injectively metrizable continua, as well as various topological semigroups, partially ordered spaces, and hyperspaces. The arc-smooth continua are shown to coincide with the freely contractible continua and with the metric K-spaces of Stadtlander. Known characterizations of smoothness in dendroids involving closed partial orders, the set function T, radially convex metrics, continuous selections, and order preserving mappings are extended to the setting of continua with arc-structures. Various consequences of the special contractibility properties of arc-smooth continua are also obtained

    Development and pilot testing of HEXORR: Hand EXOskeleton Rehabilitation Robot

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Following acute therapeutic interventions, the majority of stroke survivors are left with a poorly functioning hemiparetic hand. Rehabilitation robotics has shown promise in providing patients with intensive therapy leading to functional gains. Because of the hand's crucial role in performing activities of daily living, attention to hand therapy has recently increased.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This paper introduces a newly developed Hand Exoskeleton Rehabilitation Robot (HEXORR). This device has been designed to provide full range of motion (ROM) for all of the hand's digits. The thumb actuator allows for variable thumb plane of motion to incorporate different degrees of extension/flexion and abduction/adduction. Compensation algorithms have been developed to improve the exoskeleton's backdrivability by counteracting gravity, stiction and kinetic friction. We have also designed a force assistance mode that provides extension assistance based on each individual's needs. A pilot study was conducted on 9 unimpaired and 5 chronic stroke subjects to investigate the device's ability to allow physiologically accurate hand movements throughout the full ROM. The study also tested the efficacy of the force assistance mode with the goal of increasing stroke subjects' active ROM while still requiring active extension torque on the part of the subject.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>For 12 of the hand digits'15 joints in neurologically normal subjects, there were no significant ROM differences (P > 0.05) between active movements performed inside and outside of HEXORR. Interjoint coordination was examined in the 1<sup>st </sup>and 3<sup>rd </sup>digits, and no differences were found between inside and outside of the device (P > 0.05). Stroke subjects were capable of performing free hand movements inside of the exoskeleton and the force assistance mode was successful in increasing active ROM by 43 ± 5% (P < 0.001) and 24 ± 6% (P = 0.041) for the fingers and thumb, respectively.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our pilot study shows that this device is capable of moving the hand's digits through nearly the entire ROM with physiologically accurate trajectories. Stroke subjects received the device intervention well and device impedance was minimized so that subjects could freely extend and flex their digits inside of HEXORR. Our active force-assisted condition was successful in increasing the subjects' ROM while promoting active participation.</p

    Pvt1-encoded microRNAs in oncogenesis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The functional significance of the <it>Pvt1 </it>locus in the oncogenesis of Burkitt's lymphoma and plasmacytomas has remained a puzzle. In these tumors, <it>Pvt1 </it>is the site of reciprocal translocations to immunoglobulin loci. Although the locus encodes a number of alternative transcripts, no protein or regulatory RNA products were found. The recent identification of non-coding microRNAs encoded within the <it>PVT1 </it>region has suggested a regulatory role for this locus.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The mouse <it>Pvt1 </it>locus encodes several microRNAs. In mouse T cell lymphomas induced by retroviral insertions into the locus, the <it>Pvt1 </it>transcripts, and at least one of their microRNA products, mmu-miR-1204 are overexpressed. Whereas up to seven co-mutations can be found in a single tumor, in over 2,000 tumors none had insertions into both the <it>Myc </it>and <it>Pvt1 </it>loci.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Judging from the large number of integrations into the <it>Pvt1 </it>locus – more than in the nearby <it>Myc </it>locus – <it>Pvt1 </it>and the microRNAs encoded by it are as important as <it>Myc </it>in T lymphomagenesis, and, presumably, in T cell activation. An analysis of the co-mutations in the lymphomas likely place <it>Pvt1 </it>and <it>Myc </it>into the same pathway.</p

Redox transitions within these systems can promote transformation of metastable phases, including ferrihydrite, and repartitioning of associated Mo(VI). Recent studies show that Mo(VI) coordination shifts from tetrahedral to octahedral during Fe(II)-induced ferrihydrite transformation. However, effects of initial conditions including solution pH, the Mo(VI) uptake mechanism, and Mo(VI) loading on repartitioning are not known. We performed batch experiments using ferrihydrite suspensions prepared with adsorbed or coprecipitated Mo(VI) (0, 25, and 100 μmol g–1) at two initial pH values (pH0; 5.0 and 6.5). We catalyzed ferrihydrite transformation under anoxic conditions by adding Fe(II)(aq) (0.5 mM) and monitored pH, [Mo]T, and [Fe]T over time. After 168 h, we collected reacted solids for analysis by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy-selected area electron diffraction (TEM-SAED), and Mo K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. XRD data indicate that bulk ferrihydrite transformation was limited in all but the pH0 6.5 coprecipitated Mo(VI) experiments. The TEM-SAED results reveal that nanoscale lepidocrocite and goethite formed at ferrihydrite surfaces in all experiments, whereas nanoscale bamfordite [FeMo2O6(OH)3·H2O] crystallites were observed in pH0 6.5 experiments. EXAFS models reveal changes in Mo(VI) coordination and bonding consistent with bamfordite precipitation combined with structural incorporation into neoformed goethite and lepidocrocite. Our results improve the understanding of Mo(VI) retention pathways in geohydrologic systems

    Systems-theoretic Safety Assessment of Robotic Telesurgical Systems

    Robotic telesurgical systems are one of the most complex medical cyber-physical systems on the market, and have been used in over 1.75 million procedures during the last decade. Despite significant improvements in design of robotic surgical systems through the years, there have been ongoing occurrences of safety incidents during procedures that negatively impact patients. This paper presents an approach for systems-theoretic safety assessment of robotic telesurgical systems using software-implemented fault-injection. We used a systemstheoretic hazard analysis technique (STPA) to identify the potential safety hazard scenarios and their contributing causes in RAVEN II robot, an open-source robotic surgical platform. We integrated the robot control software with a softwareimplemented fault-injection engine which measures the resilience of the system to the identified safety hazard scenarios by automatically inserting faults into different parts of the robot control software. Representative hazard scenarios from real robotic surgery incidents reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) MAUDE database were used to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach for safety-based design of robotic telesurgical systems.Comment: Revise based on reviewers feedback.     Short-Wave Infrared Compressive Imaging of Single Photons

    We present a short-wave infrared (SWIR) single photon camera based on a single superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD) and compressive imaging. We show SWIR single photon imaging at a megapixel resolution with a low signal-to-background ratio around 0.6, show SWIR video acquisition at 20 frames per second and 64x64 pixel video resolution, and demonstrate sub-nanosecond resolution time-of-flight imaging. All scenes were sampled by detecting only a small number of photons for each compressive sampling matrix. In principle, our technique can be used for imaging faint objects in the mid-IR regime

    Segue Between Favorable and Unfavorable Solvation

    Solvation of small and large clusters are studied by simulation, considering a range of solvent-solute attractive energy strengths. Over a wide range of conditions, both for solvation in the Lennard-Jones liquid and in the SPC model of water, it is shown that the mean solvent density varies linearly with changes in solvent-solute adhesion or attractive energy strength. This behavior is understood from the perspective of Weeks' theory of solvation [Ann. Rev. Phys. Chem. 2002, 53, 533] and supports theories based upon that perspective.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
