Mass Determination Method for the Right and Left Selectron Above Production Threshold
The determination of the masses of Supersymmetric particles such as the
Selectron for energies above threshold using the energy end-points method is
subject to signal deconvolution difficulties and to Standard Model and
Supersymmetric backgrounds. The important features of Right and Left Selectron
production are used to design an experimentally robust method both for
determining the Left and Right Selectron masses, the Neutralino mass and for
suppresing backgrounds. The mass resolution is an order of magnitude better
than in previous methods. Additional features, such as the determination of the
relative leptonic branching ratios of the selectron decay are present in the
method.Comment: 4 pages in RevTex (Latex) format and 4 figures in eps forma
Mass matrix Ansatz and lepton flavor violation in the THDM-III
Predictive Higgs-fermion couplings can be obtained when a specific texture
for the fermion mass matrices is included in the general two-Higgs doublet
model. We derive the form of these couplings in the charged lepton sector using
a Hermitian mass matrix Ansatz with four-texture zeros. The presence of
unconstrained phases in the vertices phi-li-lj modifies the pattern of
flavor-violating Higgs interactions. Bounds on the model parameters are
obtained from present limits on rare lepton flavor violating processes, which
could be extended further by the search for the decay tau -> mu mu mu and mu-e
conversion at future experiments. The signal from Higgs boson decays phi -> tau
mu could be searched at the large hadron collider (LHC), while e-mu transitions
could produce a detectable signal at a future e mu-collider, through the
reaction e mu -> h0 -> tau tau.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figure
Micro-Hall Magnetometry Studies of Thermally Assisted and Pure Quantum Tunneling in Single Molecule Magnet Mn12-Acetate
We have studied the crossover between thermally assisted and pure quantum
tunneling in single crystals of high spin (S=10) uniaxial single molecule
magnet Mn12-acetate using micro-Hall effect magnetometry. Magnetic hysteresis
experiments have been used toinvestigate the energy levels that determine the
magnetization reversal as a function of magnetic field and temperature. These
experiments demonstrate that the crossover occurs in a narrow (~0.1 K) or broad
(~1 K) temperature interval depending on the magnitude and direction of the
applied field. For low external fields applied parallel to the easy axis, the
energy levels that dominate the tunneling shift abruptly with temperature. In
the presence of a transverse field and/or large longitudinal field these energy
levels change with temperature more gradually. A comparison of our experimental
results with model calculations of this crossover suggest that there are
additional mechanisms that enhance the tunneling rate of low lying energy
levels and broaden the crossover for small transverse fields.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

Simply Modeling Meson HQET
A simple relativistic model of heavy-quark-light-quark mesons is proposed. In
an expansion in inverse powers of the heavy quark mass we find that all zeroth
and first order heavy quark symmetry relations are satisfied. The main results
are: - the difference between the meson mass and the heavy quark mass plays a
significant role even at zeroth order; - the slope of the Isgur-Wise function
at the zero recoil point is typically less than ; - the first order
correction to the pseudoscalar decay constant is large and negative; - the four
universal functions describing the first order corrections to the semileptonic
decay form factors are small; - these latter corrections are quite insensitive
to the choice of model parameters, and in particular to the effects of
hyperfine mass splitting.Comment: 17 pages, LaTeX, 3 LaTeX figures in separate file, UTPT-92-16. This

Flavor changing single top quark production channels at e^+e^- colliders in the effective Lagrangian description
We perform a global analysis of the sensitivity of LEP2 and e^+e^- colliders
with a c.m. energy in the range 500 - 2000 GeV to new flavor-changing single
top quark production in the effective Lagrangian approach. The processes
considered are sensitive to new flavor-changing effective vertices such as Ztc,
htc, four-Fermi tcee contact terms as well as a right-handed Wtb coupling. We
show that e^+ e^- colliders are most sensitive to the physics responsible for
the contact tcee vertices. For example, it is found that the recent data from
the 189 GeV LEP2 run can be used to rule out any new flavor physics that can
generate these four-Fermi operators up to energy scales of \Lambda > 0.7 - 1.4
TeV, depending on the type of the four-Fermi interaction. We also show that a
corresponding limit of \Lambda > 1.3 - 2.5 and \Lambda > 17 - 27 TeV can be
reached at the future 200 GeV LEP2 run and a 1000 GeV e^+e^- collider,
respectively. We note that these limits are much stronger than the typical
limits which can be placed on flavor diagonal four-Fermi couplings. Similar
results hold for \mu^+\mu^- colliders and for tu(bar) associated production.
Finally we briefly comment on the necessity of measuring all flavor-changing
effective vertices as they can be produced by different types of heavy physics.Comment: 34 pages, plain latex, 7 figures embadded in the text using epsfig.

The Isgur-Wise function in a relativistic model for system
We use the Dirac equation with a ``(asymptotically free) Coulomb + (Lorentz
scalar) linear '' potential to estimate the light quark wavefunction for mesons in the limit . We use these wavefunctions to
calculate the Isgur-Wise function for orbital and radial
ground states in the phenomenologically interesting range . We find a simple expression for the zero-recoil slope, , where is the energy eigenvalue
of the light quark, which can be identified with the parameter
of the Heavy Quark Effective Theory. This result implies an upper bound of
for the slope . Also, because for a very light quark the size of the meson is determined mainly by the
``confining'' term in the potential , the shape of
is seen to be mostly sensitive to the dimensionless
ratio . We present results for the ranges of
parameters , and
light quark masses and compare to existing
experimental data and other theoretical estimates. Fits to the data give:

Resonance saturation for four-nucleon operators
In the modern description of nuclear forces based on chiral effective field
theory, four-nucleon operators with unknown coupling constants appear. These
couplings can be fixed by a fit to the low partial waves of neutron-proton
scattering. We show that the so determined numerical values can be understood
on the basis of phenomenological one-boson-exchange models. We also extract
these values from various modern high accuracy nucleon-nucleon potentials and
demonstrate their consistency and remarkable agreement with the values in the
chiral effective field theory approach. This paves the way for estimating the
low-energy constants of operators with more nucleon fields and/or external
probes.Comment: 16 pp, REVTeX, 3 figure
Power counting and effective field theory for charmonium
We hypothesize that the correct power counting for charmonia is in the
parameter Lambda_QCD/m_c, but is not based purely on dimensional analysis (as
is HQET). This power counting leads to predictions which differ from those
resulting from the usual velocity power counting rules of NRQCD. In particular,
we show that while Lambda_QCD/m_c power counting preserves the empirically
verified predictions of spin symmetry in decays, it also leads to new
predictions which include: A hierarchy between spin singlet and triplet octet
matrix elements in the J/psi system. A quenching of the net polarization in
production at large transverse momentum. No end point enhancement in radiative
decays. We discuss explicit tests which can differentiate between the
traditional and new theories of NRQCD.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figure Replaced plot of the psi polarization parameter
