Improved SAS codes for life table analysis of arthropod populations.
Abstract: Fertility life table (FLT) analysis of arthropod populations can capture chronicle sub lethal effects not detected by acute survival assays (MARINHO-PRADO, 2011; NASCIMENTO et al., 1998; NARDO et al (2001) LIU et al, 2005; LUMBIERRES et al, 2004). Inference on FLT parameters requires the use of computational methods to estimate the variance of demographic summary measures derived from information of survival and fertility of the arthropod populations under study. Jackknife-based software available for life table analysis (HULTING et al, 1990 ; MAIA et al, 2000) were developed for analyzing qualitative treatments, but such approach is frequently misused for contrasting levels of quantitative factors (GANJISAFFAR et al., 2011; PAKYARI et al., 2011; RAZMJOU et al. 2011). We present herein an extension of SAS codes already available for analysis of qualitative treatments (lifetable.sas, MAIA et al, 2000) now including methods for analysis of quantitative factors via jackknife-based regression analysis
Distribution And Sources Of Aliphatic And Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Surface Sediments Of Itajai-acu Estuarine System In Brazil
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior (CAPES)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)The Itajai-Acu estuarine system, located in southern Brazil, has great economic importance due to the presence of two ports (Itajai and Navegantes). This system is affected by industrial and dredging activities, which can cause the remobilization of pollutants accumulated over time in the sediment. In this context, hydrocarbons were assessed in twelve surface sediment samples. n-Alkane and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) concentrations were determined by gas chromatography and their sources assessed. Total concentrations ranged between 0.50 +/- 0.04 and 69.70 +/- 3.90 mu g g(-1) dry weight (d.w.)for n-alkanes and from 63.9 +/- 12.1 to 1459.0 +/- 43.5 ng g(-1) d.w. for PAH. Most of the sediment samples presented carbon preference index (CPI) values close to unity, indicating that the area is submitted to petroleum-related sources, mainly close to Itajai harbor, where an intense unresolved complex mixture (UCM) was observed. The presence at all stations of alpha beta-hopane biomarkers also indicated petrogenic input. Based on selected PAH ratios, the sedimentary PAH composition reflects a mixture of both petrogenic and pyrolytic sources. A comparison of the PAH concentrations found in this study with those listed in the sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) indicated that adverse biological effects on the biota are rarely expected.284603614Petroleo Brasileiro S.A.
The active mathematics project at ISCAP
This paper summarizes a project that is contributing to a change in the way of teaching and learning Mathematics.
Mathematics is a subject of the Accounting and Administration course. In this subject we teach: Functions and Algebra. The aim is that the students understand the basic concepts
and is able to apply them in other issues, when possible, establishing a bridge between the
issues that they have studied and their application in Accounting.
As from this year, the Accounting course falls under in Bologna Process. The teacher and
the student roles have changed. The time for theoretical and practical classes has been
reduced, so it was necessary to modify the way of teaching and learning.
In the theoretical classes we use systems of multimedia projection to present the concepts,
and in the practical classes we solve exercises.
To supplement our theoretical and practical classes we have developed an active
mathematics project called MatActiva based on the Moodle platform offered by PAOL -
Projecto de Apoio Online (Online Support Project). In the last versions of Moodle, it is
possible use the TeX language to create math questions. Using this tool we created a set of
interactive materials.
With the creation of this new project we wanted to take advantage already obtained results
with the previous experiences, giving to the students opportunities to complement their
study in Mathematics.
One of the great objectives is to motivate students, encourage them to overcome theirs
difficulties through an auto-study, giving them more confidence and the opportunity to
seeing others perspectives of the mathematics subjects.
In the MatActiva project the students have a big collection of information about the way of
the subject works, which includes the objectives, the program, recommended bibliography,
evaluation method and summaries. It works as material support for the practical and
theoretical classes, the slides of the theoretical classes are available, the sheets with
exercises for the students to do in the classroom and complementary exercises, as well as
the exams of previous years. Students can also do diagnostic tests and evaluation tests
online.
Our approach is a reflexive one, based on the professional experience of the teachers that
explore and incorporate new tools of Moodle with their students and coordinate the project

Large-scale analysis of the SDSS-III DR8 photometric luminous galaxies angular correlation function
We analyse the large-scale angular correlation function (ACF) of the CMASS
luminous galaxies (LGs), a photometric-redshift catalogue based on the Data
Release 8 (DR8) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-III. This catalogue contains
over LGs in the range , which was split
into four redshift shells of constant width. First, we estimate the constraints
on the redshift-space distortion (RSD) parameters and ,
where is the galaxy bias, the growth rate and is the
normalization of the perturbations, finding that they vary appreciably among
different redshift shells, in agreement with previous results using DR7 data.
When assuming constant RSD parameters over the survey redshift range, we obtain
, which agrees at the level with Baryon
Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey DR9 spectroscopic results. Next, we performed
two cosmological analyses, where relevant parameters not fitted were kept fixed
at their fiducial values. In the first analysis, we extracted the baryon
acoustic oscillation peak position for the four redshift shells, and combined
with the sound horizon scale from 7-year \textit{Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy
Probe} to produce the constraints and
. In the second analysis, we used the ACF full shape
information to constrain cosmology using real data for the first time, finding
and .
These results are in good agreement with findings, showing that the ACF
can be efficiently applied to constrain cosmology in future photometric galaxy
surveys.Comment: MNRAS accepted. Minor corrections to match publish versio
