On the design of optimal compliant walls for turbulence control
This paper employs the theoretical framework developed by Luhar et al. (J.
Fluid Mech., 768, 415-441) to consider the design of compliant walls for
turbulent skin friction reduction. Specifically, the effects of simple
spring-damper walls are contrasted with the effects of more complex walls
incorporating tension, stiffness and anisotropy. In addition, varying mass
ratios are tested to provide insight into differences between aerodynamic and
hydrodynamic applications. Despite the differing physical responses, all the
walls tested exhibit some important common features. First, the effect of the
walls (positive or negative) is greatest at conditions close to resonance, with
sharp transitions in performance across the resonant frequency or phase speed.
Second, compliant walls are predicted to have a more pronounced effect on
slower-moving structures because such structures generally have larger
wall-pressure signatures. Third, two-dimensional (spanwise constant) structures
are particularly susceptible to further amplification. These features are
consistent with many previous experiments and simulations, suggesting that
mitigating the rise of such two-dimensional structures is essential to
designing performance-improving walls. For instance, it is shown that further
amplification of such large-scale two-dimensional structures explains why the
optimal anisotropic walls identified by Fukagata et al. via DNS (J. Turb., 9,
1-17) only led to drag reduction in very small domains. The above observations
are used to develop design and methodology guidelines for future research on
compliant walls
Predicting the response of turbulent channel flow to varying-phase opposition control: Resolvent analysis as a tool for flow control design
The present study evaluates the capabilities of a low-order flow model based on the resolvent analysis of McKeon and Sharma [B. J. McKeon and A. S. Sharma, J. Fluid Mech. 658, 336 (2010)] for the purpose of controller design for drag reduction in wall-bounded turbulent flows. To this end, we first show that the model is able to approximate the change in mean wall shear stress, which is commonly used as measure for drag reduction. We also derive an analytical expression that decomposes the drag reduction in internal flows into terms that can be predicted directly by the model and terms that allow for quantification of model error if high-fidelity data are available. We then show by example of varying-phase opposition control in a low-Reynolds-number turbulent channel flow that the drag reduction predicted by the resolvent model captures the trend observed in direct numerical simulation (DNS) over a wide range of controller parameters. The DNS results confirm the resolvent model prediction that the attainable drag reduction strongly depends on the relative phase between sensor measurement and actuator response, which raises interesting flow physics questions for future studies. The good agreement between the resolvent model and DNS further reveals that resolvent analysis, which at its heart is a linear technique, is able to approximate the response of the full nonlinear system to control. We also show that in order to make accurate predictions the model only needs to resolve a small subset of the DNS wave numbers and that the controlled resolvent modes obey the Reynolds-number scaling laws of the uncontrolled resolvent operator derived by Moarref et al. [R. Moarref et al., J. Fluid Mech. 734, 275 (2013)]. As a consequence, our results suggest that resolvent analysis can provide a suitable flow model to design feedback flow control schemes for the purpose of drag reduction in incompressible wall-bounded turbulent flows even at technologically relevant Reynolds numbers
Solidification/stabilization technology for radioactive wastes using cement: an appraisal
Across the world, any activity associated with the nuclear fuel cycle such as nuclear facility operation and decommissioning that produces radioactive materials generates ultramodern civilian radioactive waste, which is quite hazardous to human health and the ecosystem. Therefore, the development of effectual and commanding management is the need of the hour to make certain the sustainability of the nuclear industries. During the management process of waste, its immobilization is one of the key activities conducted with a view to producing a durable waste form which can perform with sustainability for longer time frames. The cementation of radioactive waste is a widespread move towards its encapsulation, solidification, and finally disposal. Conventionally, Portland cement (PC) is expansively employed as an encapsulant material for storage, transportation and, more significantly, as a radiation safeguard to vigorous several radioactive waste streams. Cement solidification/stabilization (S/S) is the most widely employed treatment technique for radioactive wastes due to its superb structural strength and shielding effects. On the other hand, the eye-catching pros of cement such as the higher mechanical strength of the resulting solidified waste form, trouble-free operation and cost-effectiveness have attracted researchers to employ it most commonly for the immobilization of radionuclides. In the interest to boost the solidified waste performances, such as their mechanical properties, durability, and reduction in the leaching of radionuclides, vast attempts have been made in the past to enhance the cementation technology. Additionally, special types of cement were developed based on Portland cement to solidify these perilous radioactive wastes. The present paper reviews not only the solidification/stabilization technology of radioactive wastes using cement but also addresses the challenges that stand in the path of the design of durable cementitious waste forms for these problematical functioning wastes. In addition, the manuscript presents a review of modern cement technologies for the S/S of radioactive waste, taking into consideration the engineering attributes and chemistry of pure cement, cement incorporated with SCM, calcium sulpho–aluminate-based cement, magnesium-based cement, along with their applications in the S/S of hazardous radioactive wastes

The Ginninderra CH4 and CO2 release experiment: An evaluation of gas detection and quantification techniques
A methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) release experiment was held from April to June 2015 at the Ginninderra Controlled Release Facility in Canberra, Australia. The experiment provided an opportunity to compare different emission quantification techniques against a simulated CH4 and CO2 point source release, where the actual release rates were unknown to the participants. Eight quantification techniques were assessed: three tracer ratio techniques (two mobile); backwards Lagrangian stochastic modelling; forwards Lagrangian stochastic modelling; Lagrangian stochastic (LS) footprint modelling; atmospheric tomography using point and using integrated line sensors. The majority of CH4 estimates were within 20% of the actual CH4 release rate (5.8 g/min), with the tracer ratio technique providing the closest estimate to both the CH4 and CO2 release rates (100 g/min). Once the release rate was known, the majority of revised estimates were within 10% of the actual release rate. The study illustrates the power of measuring the emission rate using multiple simultaneous methods and obtaining an ensemble median or mean. An ensemble approach to estimating the CH4 emission rate proved successful with the ensemble median estimate within 16% for the actual release rate for the blind release experiment and within 2% once the release rate was known. The release also provided an opportunity to assess the effectiveness of stationary and mobile ground and aerial CH4 detection technologies. Sensor detection limits and sampling rates were found to be significant limitations for CH4 and CO2 detection. A hyperspectral imager’s capacity to image the CH4 release from 100 m, and a Boreal CH4 laser sensor’s ability to track moving targets suggest the future possibility to map gas plumes using a single laser and mobile aerial reflector
