The Random-bond Potts model in the large-q limit
We study the critical behavior of the q-state Potts model with random
ferromagnetic couplings. Working with the cluster representation the partition
sum of the model in the large-q limit is dominated by a single graph, the
fractal properties of which are related to the critical singularities of the
random Potts model. The optimization problem of finding the dominant graph, is
studied on the square lattice by simulated annealing and by a combinatorial
algorithm. Critical exponents of the magnetization and the correlation length
are estimated and conformal predictions are compared with numerical results.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Absence of a metallic phase in random-bond Ising models in two dimensions: applications to disordered superconductors and paired quantum Hall states
When the two-dimensional random-bond Ising model is represented as a
noninteracting fermion problem, it has the same symmetries as an ensemble of
random matrices known as class D. A nonlinear sigma model analysis of the
latter in two dimensions has previously led to the prediction of a metallic
phase, in which the fermion eigenstates at zero energy are extended. In this
paper we argue that such behavior cannot occur in the random-bond Ising model,
by showing that the Ising spin correlations in the metallic phase violate the
bound on such correlations that results from the reality of the Ising
couplings. Some types of disorder in spinless or spin-polarized p-wave
superconductors and paired fractional quantum Hall states allow a mapping onto
an Ising model with real but correlated bonds, and hence a metallic phase is
not possible there either. It is further argued that vortex disorder, which is
generic in the fractional quantum Hall applications, destroys the ordered or
weak-pairing phase, in which nonabelian statistics is obtained in the pure
case.Comment: 13 pages; largely independent of cond-mat/0007254; V. 2: as publishe
Disordered Systems and the Replica Method in AdS/CFT
We formulate a holographic description of effects of disorder in conformal
field theories based on the replica method and the AdS/CFT correspondence.
Starting with copies of conformal field theories, randomness with a
gaussian distribution is described by a deformation of double trace operators.
After computing physical quantities, we take the limit at the final
step. We compute correlation functions in the disordered systems by using the
holographic replica method as well as the formulation in the conformal field
theory. We find examples where disorder changes drastically the scaling of two
point functions. The renormalization group flow of the effective central charge
in our disordered systems is also discussed.Comment: 26 pages, references added, published versio
The public health and economic benefits of taxing sugar-sweetened beverages
Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages has increased in recent decades; evidence suggests that consumption of these beverages contributes to obesity and adverse health outcomes. The authors discuss the potential public health and economic benefits of taxing sugar-sweetened beverages
Expression of Cholera Toxin B–Proinsulin Fusion Protein in Lettuce and Tobacco Chloroplasts – Oral Administration Protects Against Development of Insulitis in Non-Obese Diabetic Mice
Lettuce and tobacco chloroplast transgenic lines expressing the cholera toxin B subunit–human proinsulin (CTB-Pins) fusion protein were generated. CTB-Pins accumulated up to ~16% of total soluble protein (TSP) in tobacco and up to ~2.5% of TSP in lettuce. Eight milligrams of powdered tobacco leaf material expressing CTB-Pins or, as negative controls, CTB–green fluorescent protein (CTB-GFP) or interferon–GFP (IFN-GFP), or untransformed leaf, were administered orally, each week for 7 weeks, to 5-week-old female non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice. The pancreas of CTB-Pins-treated mice showed decreased infiltration of cells characteristic of lymphocytes (insulitis); insulin-producing β-cells in the pancreatic islets of CTB-Pins-treated mice were significantly preserved, with lower blood or urine glucose levels, by contrast with the few β-cells remaining in the pancreatic islets of the negative controls. Increased expression of immunosuppressive cytokines, such as interleukin-4 and interleukin-10 (IL-4 and IL-10), was observed in the pancreas of CTB-Pins-treated NOD mice. Serum levels of immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1), but not IgG2a, were elevated in CTB-Pins-treated mice. Taken together, T-helper 2 (Th2) lymphocyte-mediated oral tolerance is a likely mechanism for the prevention of pancreatic insulitis and the preservation of insulin-producing β-cells. This is the first report of expression of a therapeutic protein in transgenic chloroplasts of an edible crop. Transplastomic lettuce plants expressing CTB-Pins grew normally and transgenes were maternally inherited in T1 progeny. This opens up the possibility for the low-cost production and delivery of human therapeutic proteins, and a strategy for the treatment of various other autoimmune diseases
Production and Decay of D_1(2420)^0 and D_2^*(2460)^0
We have investigated and final states and
observed the two established charmed mesons, the with mass
MeV/c and width MeV/c and
the with mass MeV/c and width
MeV/c. Properties of these final states, including
their decay angular distributions and spin-parity assignments, have been
studied. We identify these two mesons as the doublet predicted
by HQET. We also obtain constraints on {\footnotesize } as a function of the cosine of the relative phase of the two
amplitudes in the decay.Comment: 15 pages in REVTEX format. hardcopies with figures can be obtained by

Measurement of the branching fraction for
We have studied the leptonic decay of the resonance into tau
pairs using the CLEO II detector. A clean sample of tau pair events is
identified via events containing two charged particles where exactly one of the
particles is an identified electron. We find . The result is consistent with
expectations from lepton universality.Comment: 9 pages, RevTeX, two Postscript figures available upon request, CLNS

Study of the B^0 Semileptonic Decay Spectrum at the Upsilon(4S) Resonance
We have made a first measurement of the lepton momentum spectrum in a sample
of events enriched in neutral B's through a partial reconstruction of B0 -->
D*- l+ nu. This spectrum, measured with 2.38 fb**-1 of data collected at the
Upsilon(4S) resonance by the CLEO II detector, is compared directly to the
inclusive lepton spectrum from all Upsilon(4S) events in the same data set.
These two spectra are consistent with having the same shape above 1.5 GeV/c.
From the two spectra and two other CLEO measurements, we obtain the B0 and B+
semileptonic branching fractions, b0 and b+, their ratio, and the production
ratio f+-/f00 of B+ and B0 pairs at the Upsilon(4S). We report b+/b0=0.950
(+0.117-0.080) +- 0.091, b0 = (10.78 +- 0.60 +- 0.69)%, and b+ = (10.25 +- 0.57
+- 0.65)%. b+/b0 is equivalent to the ratio of charged to neutral B lifetimes,
tau+/tau0.Comment: 14 page, postscript file also available at

Measurement of the Decay Asymmetry Parameters in and
We have measured the weak decay asymmetry parameters (\aLC ) for two \LC\
decay modes. Our measurements are \aLC = -0.94^{+0.21+0.12}_{-0.06-0.06} for
the decay mode and \aLC = -0.45\pm 0.31 \pm
0.06 for the decay mode . By combining these
measurements with the previously measured decay rates, we have extracted the
parity-violating and parity-conserving amplitudes. These amplitudes are used to
test models of nonleptonic charmed baryon decay.Comment: 11 pages including the figures. Uses REVTEX and psfig macros. Figures
