Dynamics of the Distorted Diamond Chain
We present results on the dynamics of the distorted diamond chain, S=1/2
dimers alternating with single spins 1/2 and exchange couplings and
in between. The dynamics in the spin fluid (SF) and tetramer-dimer (TD) phases
is investigated numerically by exact diagonalisation for up to 24 spins.
Representative excitation spectra are presented, both for zero magnetic field
and in the 1/3 plateau phase and the relevant parameters are determined across
the phase diagram. The behavior across the SF-TD phase transition line is
discussed for the specific heat and for excitation spectra. The relevance of
the distorted diamond chain model for the material Cu(CO)(OH)
(azurite) is discussed with particular emphasis on inelastic neutron scattering
experiments, a recent suggestion of one possibly ferromagnetic coupling
constant is not confirmed.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figure

Finite Temperature Dynamics of the Spin 1/2 Bond Alternating Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Chain
We present results for the dynamic structure factor of the S=1/2 bond
alternating Heisenberg chain over a large range of frequencies and
temperatures. Data are obtained from a numerical evaluation of thermal averages
based on the calculation of all eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for chains of up
to 20 spins. Interpretation is guided by the exact temperature dependence in
the noninteracting dimer limit which remains qualitatively valid up to an
interdimer exchange . The temperature induced central peak
around zero frequency is clearly identified and aspects of the crossover to
spin diffusion in its variation from low to high temperatures are discussed.
The one-magnon peak acquires an asymmetric shape with increasing temperature.
The two-magnon peak is dominated by the S=1 bound state which remains well
defined up to temperatures of the order of J. The variation with temperature
and wavevector of the integrated intensity for one and two magnon scattering
and of the central peak are discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

A Parametric Model for Operability of Offshore Support Vessels via Configuration-Based Design
TCC (graduação) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Campus Joinville. The purpose of Offshore Support Vessels (OSVs) is to support the oil industry for the many activities in sea, such as supply, anchor handling, towing and construction. For the proper performance of each operation, a vessel requires different installed capabilities on board, in which the availability and capacity of these capabilities are directly connected to the operational level of the vessel. The main objective of this thesis is to develop a parametric model of an OSV to take into account the vessel capabilities and its connection to the main operations that these vessels can perform, ranking the designs in some sort of score according to performance and construction cost. The model consists on parametric equations, based on regression analysis from similar vessels, and on a preliminary configuration based approach for specific modules, such as cranes, extra accommodation and larger propulsion. The model will take into account different contexts in which the vessel will operate (e.g. North Sea, Arctic and Brazil). The model will be developed in common engineering tools, such as Excel and JavaScript
Labour‐saving technologies in smallholder agriculture: An economy‐wide model with field operations
Labour-saving technologies are relevant for agricultural development. Yet, as this study shows, they are poorly integrated into agricultural production functions of economy-wide models. We report a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model, which explicitly incorporating field operations (e.g. land preparation, weeding or harvesting) in the context of smallholder agriculture. The field operations approach allows to model technological trade-offs in organic and conventional production systems at various stages of the agricultural production process. Simulating a structural change scenario, we compare the performance of the field operations approach with published benchmark production structures by assessing how they replicate empirically observed changes in land and agrochemical use. This benchmark analysis shows that incorporating field operations replicates the observed empirical changes most accurately and allows for more realistic modelling of labour-saving technologies. We use the field operations model to investigate three policy options to mitigate labour shortages in the agricultural sector of Bhutan. Permitting the employment of Indian workers in agriculture has the highest short-term potential in this respect. We find that subsidising agricultural machinery hiring services and removing import tariffs on agrochemical inputs are found to be less effective. Further options for model developments, such as combining field operations and labour market seasonality, are highlighted.Stiftung fiat panis, Ulm, Germany
