What\u27s Below the Peak? Perceptions of Media from Those that Live Below the World\u27s Most Famous Mountain
This research seeks to explore the perceptions the Sherpa people in the Khumbu region have on the media that has been created about them and their communities. Interviews conducted in the Khumbu region of Nepal with a variety of individuals gave insight into how different socio-economic and educational backgrounds affect these perceptions. This research found that all Sherpa are aware to some extent of the media about them, and its biggest effect is the international tourism trade that it promotes. Furthermore, journalists visiting the region are regarded as normal tourists, and the work they do is considered accurate and suitable by the Sherpa
Production Practices of Arkansas Beef Cattle Producers
This report contains information from a 1996 survey on production practices of Arkansas beef cattle producers. While several studies have been completed on the profitability of retained ownership of beef cattle, few empirical data are available on production practices of cow/calf and stocker operations in Arkansas. This report shows that there are some differences in production methods across operation types. Further, the report summarizes demographic characteristics of Arkansas cow/calf and stocker operations. The results of this study can be particularly helpful in providing the needed data for studying the potential economic impact of feeding weaned calves to heavier weights in Arkansas as a value-added production alternative to selling calves at weaning. It should also prove helpful in the formulation of budgets and simulation models
Acoustic and aerodynamic performance of a 1.83-meter (6-ft) diameter 1.25-pressure-ratio fan (QF-8)
A 1.25-pressure-ratio 1.83-meter (6-ft) tip diameter experimental fan stage with characteristics suitable for engine application on STOL aircraft was tested for acoustic and aerodynamic performance. The design incorporated proven features for low noise, including absence of inlet guide vanes, low rotor blade tip speed, low aerodynamic blade loading, and long axial spacing between the rotor and stator blade rows. The fan was operated with five exhaust nozzle areas. The stage noise levels generally increased with a decrease in nozzle area. Separation of the acoustic one-third octave results into broadband and pure-tone components showed the broadband noise to be greater than the corresponding pure-tone components. The sideline perceived noise was highest in the rear quadrants. The acoustic results of QF-8 were compared with those of two similar STOL application fans in the test series. The QF-8 had somewhat higher relative noise levels than those of the other two fans. The aerodynamic results of QF-8 and the other two fans were compared with corresponding results from 50.8-cm (20-in.) diam scale models of these fans and design values. Although the results for the full-scale and scale models of the other two fans were in reasonable agreement for each design, the full-scale fan QF-8 results showed poor performance compared with corresponding model results and design expectations. Testing the Disk Regulation Paradigm with Spitzer Observations. II. A Clear Signature of Star-Disk Interaction in NGC 2264 and the Orion Nebula Cluster
Observations of PMS star rotation periods reveal slow rotators in young
clusters of various ages, indicating that angular momentum is somehow removed
from these rotating masses. The mechanism by which spin-up is regulated as
young stars contract has been one of the longest-standing problems in star
formation. Attempts to observationally confirm the prevailing theory that
magnetic interaction between the star and its circumstellar disk regulates
these rotation periods have produced mixed results. In this paper, we use the
unprecedented disk identification capability of the Spitzer Space Telescope to
test the star-disk interaction paradigm in two young clusters, NGC 2264 and the
Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). We show that once mass effects and sensitivity
biases are removed, a clear increase in the disk fraction with period can be
observed in both clusters across the entire period range populated by cluster
members. We also show that the long-period peak (P 8 days) of the bimodal
distribution observed for high-mass stars in the ONC is dominated by a
population of stars possessing a disk, while the short-period peak (P 2
days) is dominated by a population of stars without a disk. Our results
represent the strongest evidence to date that star-disk interaction regulates
the angular momentum of these young stars. This study will make possible
quantitative comparisons between the observed period distributions of stars
with and without a disk and numerical models of the angular momentum evolution

Floodplain environmental change during the younger dryas and holocene: Evidence from the lower kennet valley, south central England
Many lowland rivers across northwest Europe exhibit broadly similar behavioural responses to glacial-interglacial transitions and landscape development. Difficulties exist in assessing these, largely because the evidence from many rivers remains limited and fragmentary. Here we address this issue in the context of the river Kennet, a tributary of the Thames, since c. 13,000 cal. BP). Some similarities with other rivers are present, suggesting that regional climatic shifts are important controls. The Kennet differs from the regional pattern in a number of ways. The rate of response to sudden climatic change, particularly at the start of the Holocene and also mid-Holocene forest clearance, appears very high. This may reflect abrupt shifts between two catchment scale hydrological states arising from contemporary climates, land use change and geology. Stadial hydrology is dominated by nival regimes, with limited winter infiltration and high spring and summer runoff. Under an interglacial climate, infiltration is more significant. The probable absence of permafrost in the catchment means that a lag between the two states due to its gradual decay is unlikely. Palaeoecology, supported by radiocarbon dates, suggests that, at the very start of the Holocene, a dramatic episode of fine sediment deposition across most of the valley floor occurred, lasting 500-1000 years. A phase of peat accumulation followed as mineral sediment supply declined. A further shift led to tufa deposition, initially in small pools, then across the whole floodplain area, with the river flowing through channels cut in tufa and experiencing repeated avulsion. Major floods, leaving large gravel bars that still form positive relief features on the floodplain, followed mid-Holocene floodplain stability. Prehistoric deforestation is likely to be the cause of this flooding, inducing a major environmental shift with significantly increased surface runoff. Since the Bronze Age, predominantly fine sediments were deposited along the valley with apparently stable channels and vertical floodplain accretion associated with soil erosion and less catastrophic flooding. The Kennet demonstrates that, while a general pattern of river behaviour over time, within a region, may be identifiable, individual rivers are likely to diverge from this. Consequently, it is essential to understand catchment controls, particularly the relative significance of surface and subsurface hydrology
New ways of being public: the experience of foundation degrees
This article explores the recent development of new spheres of public engagement within UK higher education through an analysis of the foundation degree qualification. These, according to the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), were designed to equip students with the combination of technical skills, academic knowledge, and transferable skills increasingly being demanded by employers, and they have been identified as being at the forefront of educational agendas aimed at increasing employer engagement in the higher education (HE) sector. As such, they might be regarded as an expression of the 'increasing privatisation' of HE. However, this article argues that, on the contrary, they have enabled the development of new areas of public engagement relating to the design and delivery of courses as well as providing new opportunities for the pursuit of public policy goals such as widening participation. Such outcomes, it is argued, are the result of a number of factors that explain the 'publicness' of the qualification and that should be sustained to ensure the implementation of the 2006 Leitch Report in a manner that further develops public engagement
Recurrent flow analysis in spatiotemporally chaotic 2-dimensional Kolmogorov flow
Motivated by recent success in the dynamical systems approach to transitional
flow, we study the efficiency and effectiveness of extracting simple invariant
sets (recurrent flows) directly from chaotic/turbulent flows and the potential
of these sets for providing predictions of certain statistics of the flow.
Two-dimensional Kolmogorov flow (the 2D Navier-Stokes equations with a
sinusoidal body force) is studied both over a square [0, 2{\pi}]2 torus and a
rectangular torus extended in the forcing direction. In the former case, an
order of magnitude more recurrent flows are found than previously (Chandler &
Kerswell 2013) and shown to give improved predictions for the dissipation and
energy pdfs of the chaos via periodic orbit theory. Over the extended torus at
low forcing amplitudes, some extracted states mimick the statistics of the
spatially-localised chaos present surprisingly well recalling the striking
finding of Kawahara & Kida (2001) in low-Reynolds-number plane Couette flow. At
higher forcing amplitudes, however, success is limited highlighting the
increased dimensionality of the chaos and the need for larger data sets.
