In this article we study the short-time existence of conformal Ricci flow on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. We also prove a local Shi's type curvature derivative estimate for conformal Ricci flow.Comment: 19 pages. No figur

Stochastic Tools for Network Intrusion Detection

With the rapid development of Internet and the sharp increase of network crime, network security has become very important and received a lot of attention. We model security issues as stochastic systems. This allows us to find weaknesses in existing security systems and propose new solutions. Exploring the vulnerabilities of existing security tools can prevent cyber-attacks from taking advantages of the system weaknesses. We propose a hybrid network security scheme including intrusion detection systems (IDSs) and honeypots scattered throughout the network. This combines the advantages of two security technologies. A honeypot is an activity-based network security system, which could be the logical supplement of the passive detection policies used by IDSs. This integration forces us to balance security performance versus cost by scheduling device activities for the proposed system. By formulating the scheduling problem as a decentralized partially observable Markov decision process (DEC-POMDP), decisions are made in a distributed manner at each device without requiring centralized control. The partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) is a useful choice for controlling stochastic systems. As a combination of two Markov models, POMDPs combine the strength of hidden Markov Model (HMM) (capturing dynamics that depend on unobserved states) and that of Markov decision process (MDP) (taking the decision aspect into account). Decision making under uncertainty is used in many parts of business and science. We use here for security tools. We adopt a high-quality approximation solution for finite-space POMDPs with the average cost criterion, and their extension to DEC-POMDPs. We show how this tool could be used to design a network security framework.Comment: Accepted by International Symposium on Sensor Networks, Systems and Security (2017

Parylene membrane slot filter for the capture, analysis and culture of viable circulating tumor cells

    Get PDF
This paper presents a method of capturing viable circulating tumor cells (CTC) from human whole blood using constant-pressure-driven filtration through a specially designed parylene-C membrane “slot” filter. More than 90% viable cancer cells could be recovered from whole blood using the slot filter, with minimal non-cancer blood cells left on the filter. The feasibility of the telomerase activity measurement of a single cancer cell taken from the filter after capture was proven. The on-filter and off-filter cultures of the captured cancer cells were also demonstrated

Electronic, mechanical, and thermodynamic properties of americium dioxide

By performing density functional theory (DFT) +UU calculations, we systematically study the electronic, mechanical, tensile, and thermodynamic properties of AmO2_{2}. The experimentally observed antiferromagnetic insulating feature [J. Chem. Phys. 63, 3174 (1975)] is successfully reproduced. It is found that the chemical bonding character in AmO2_{2} is similar to that in PuO2_{2}, with smaller charge transfer and stronger covalent interactions between americium and oxygen atoms. The valence band maximum and conduction band minimum are contributed by 2p5fp-5f hybridized and 5ff electronic states respectively. The elastic constants and various moduli are calculated, which show that AmO2_{2} is less stable against shear forces than PuO2_{2}. The stress-strain relationship of AmO2_{2} is examined along the three low-index directions by employing the first-principles computational tensile test method. It is found that similar to PuO2_{2}, the [100] and [111] directions are the strongest and weakest tensile directions, respectively, but the theoretical tensile strengths of AmO2_{2} are smaller than those of PuO2_{2}. The phonon dispersion curves of AmO2_{2} are calculated and the heat capacities as well as lattice expansion curve are subsequently determined. The lattice thermal conductance of AmO2_{2} is further evaluated and compared with attainable experiments. Our present work integrally reveals various physical properties of AmO2_{2} and can be referenced for technological applications of AmO2_{2} based materials.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figure
