Can the jet steepen the light curves of GRB afterglow?
Beaming of relativistic ejecta in GRBs has been postulated by many authors in
order to reduce the total GRB energy, thus it is very important to look for the
observational evidence of beaming. Rhoads (1999) has pointed out that the
dynamics of the blast wave, which is formed when the beamed ejecta sweeping the
external medium, will be significantly modified by the sideways expansion due
to the increased swept up matter. He claimed that shortly after the bulk
Lorentz factor () of the blast wave drops below the inverse of the
initial opening angle () of the beamed ejecta, there will be a
sharp break in the afterglow light curves. However, some other authors have
performed numerical calculations and shown that the break of the light curve is
weaker and much smoother than the one analytically predicted. In this paper we
reanalyse the dynamical evolution of the jet blast wave, calculate the jet
emission analytically, we find that the sharp break predicted by Rhoads will
actually not exist, and for most cases the afterglow light curve will almost
not be affected by sideways expansion unless the beaming angle is extremely
small. We demonstrate that only when , the afterglow light
curves may be steepened by sideways expansion, and in fact there cannot be two
breaks as claimed before. We have also constructed a simple numerical code to
verify our conclusion.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, accepted by ApJ, added numerical calculation
Alternative approach to all-angle negative refraction in two-dimensional photonic crystals
We show that with an appropriate surface modification, a slab of photonic
crystal can be made to allow wave transmission within the band gap.
Furthermore, negative refraction and all-angle-negative-refraction (AANR) can
be achieved by this surface modification in frequency windows that were not
realized before in two-dimensional photonic crystals [C. Luo et al, Phys. Rev.
B 65, 201104 (2002)]. This approach to AANR leads to new applications in flat
lens imaging. Previous flat lens using photonic crystals requires object-image
distance u+v less than or equal to the lens thickness d, u+v d. Our approach
can be used to design flat lens with u+v=sd with s>>1, thus being able to image
large and/or far away objects. Our results are confirmed by FDTD simulations.Comment: 5 pages, 9 eps figs in RevTex forma
Superconductivity mediated by the antiferromagnetic spin-wave in chalcogenide iron-base superconductors
The ground state of KFeSe and other iron-based
selenide superconductors are doped antiferromagnetic semiconductors. There are
well defined iron local moments whose energies are separated from those of
conduction electrons by a large band gap in these materials. We propose that
the low energy physics of this system is governed by a model Hamiltonian of
interacting electrons with on-site ferromagnetic exchange interactions and
inter-site superexchange interactions. We have derived the effective pairing
potential of electrons under the linear spin-wave approximation and shown that
the superconductivity can be driven by mediating coherent spin wave excitations
in these materials. Our work provides a natural account for the coexistence of
superconducting and antiferromagnetic long range orders observed by neutron
scattering and other experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Duality between quantum and classical dynamics for integrable billiards
We establish a duality between the quantum wave vector spectrum and the
eigenmodes of the classical Liouvillian dynamics for integrable billiards.
Signatures of the classical eigenmodes appear as peaks in the correlation
function of the quantum wave vector spectrum. A semiclassical derivation and
numerical calculations are presented in support of the results. These classical
eigenmodes can be observed in physical experiments through the auto-correlation
of the transmission coefficient of waves in quantum billiards. Exact classical
trace formulas of the resolvent are derived for the rectangle, equilateral
triangle, and circle billiards. We also establish a correspondence between the
classical periodic orbit length spectrum and the quantum spectrum for
integrable polygonal billiards.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
Closed-form Absorption Probability of Certain D=5 and D=4 Black Holes and Leading-Order Cross-Section of Generic Extremal p-branes
We obtain the closed-form absorption probabilities for minimally-coupled
massless scalars propagating in the background of D=5 single-charge and D=4
two-charge black holes. These are the only two examples of extremal black holes
with non-vanishing absorption probabilities that can be solved in closed form
for arbitrary incident frequencies. In both cases, the absorption probability
vanishes when the frequency is below a certain threshold, and we discuss the
connection between this phenomenon and the behaviour of geodesics in these
black hole backgrounds. We also obtain leading-order absorption cross-sections
for generic extremal p-branes, and show that the expression for the
cross-section as a function of frequency coincides with the leading-order
dependence of the entropy on the temperature in the corresponding near-extremal
p-branes.Comment: Latex (3 times), 20 page
Enrollment in YFV Vaccine Trial: An Evaluation of Recruitment Outcomes Associated with a Randomized Controlled Double-Blind Trial of a Live Attenuated Yellow Fever Vaccine
This investigation evaluated several factors associated with diverse participant enrollment of a clinical trial assessing safety, immunogenicity, and comparative viremia associated with administration of 17-D live, attenuated yellow fever vaccine given alone or in combination with human immune globulin. We obtained baseline participant information (e.g., sociodemographic, medical) and followed recruitment outcomes from 2005 to 2007. Of 355 potential Yellow Fever vaccine study participants, 231 cases were analyzed. Strong interest in study participation was observed among racial and ethnically diverse persons with 36.34% eligible following initial study screening, resulting in 18.75% enrollment. The percentage of white participants increased from 63.66% (prescreened sample) to 81.25% (enrollment group). The regression model was significant with white race as a predictor of enrollment (OR=2.744, 95% CI=1.415-5.320, p=0.003).In addition, persons were more likely to enroll via direct outreach and referral mechanisms compared to mass advertising (OR=2.433, 95% CI=1.102-5.369). The findings indicate that racially diverse populations can be recruited to vaccine clinical trials, yet actual enrollment may not reflect that diversit
Tailoring pH-responsive acrylic acid microgels with hydrophobic crosslinks for drug release
Amphiphilic microgels based on the hydrophilic acrylic acid (AA) and hydrophobic crosslinks of different compositions were synthesised using a lab-on-a-chip device. The microgels were formed by polymerising hydrophobic droplets. The droplets were generated via a microfluidic platform and contained a protected form of AA, a hydrophobic crosslinker (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, EGDMA) and a free radical initiator in an organic solvent. Following photopolymerisation and subsequent hydrolysis, AA based microgels of amphiphilic nature were produced and it was demonstrated that they can successfully deliver both hydrophilic as well as hydrophobic moieties. The model drug delivery and the swelling ability of the microgels were influenced by the pH of the aqueous solution as well as the crosslinking density and hydrophobic content of the microgels
Microfluidically fabricated pH-responsive anionic amphiphilic microgels for drug release
© 2016 The Royal Society of Chemistry. Amphiphilic microgels of different composition based on the hydrophilic, pH-responsive acrylic acid (AA) and the hydrophobic, non-ionic n-butyl acrylate (BuA) were synthesised using a lab-on-a-chip device. Hydrophobic droplets were generated via a microfluidic platform that contained a protected form of AA, BuA, the hydrophobic crosslinker, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), and a free radical initiator in an organic solvent. These hydrophobic droplets were photopolymerised within the microfluidic channels and subsequently hydrolysed, enabling an integrated platform for the rapid, automated, and in situ production of anionic amphiphilic microgels. The amphiphilic microgels did not feature the conventional core-shell structure but were instead based on random amphiphilic copolymers of AA and BuA and hydrophobic crosslinks. Due to their amphiphilic nature they were able to encapsulate and deliver both hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties. The model drug delivery and the swelling ability of the microgels were influenced by the pH of the surrounding aqueous solution and the hydrophobic content of the microgels
